Chapter 47: The Descent of Truth
Kilua and Gon barely had time to brace themselves as the platform they stood on plummeted deeper into the abyss. The air around them grew colder, and the faint glow from the orbs above faded into an oppressive darkness. The sensation of falling was disorienting, making even Kilua's sharp senses falter momentarily.
"Kilua, what's happening?" Gon shouted, his voice almost lost in the rush of wind.
Kilua tightened his grip on the edge of the platform, his sharp eyes scanning the void below. "It's taking us somewhere else," he said grimly. "This was never about beating that figure—it's about surviving the fall."
The platform began to stabilize, its descent slowing as a new environment emerged from the darkness. Massive stone pillars jutted out from the void, their surfaces etched with glowing symbols that pulsated like a heartbeat. The atmosphere was thick with a strange energy, unlike anything Kilua or Gon had encountered before.
As the platform came to a halt, they found themselves in the center of a massive underground structure. The walls stretched endlessly in every direction, their surfaces alive with shifting patterns of light and shadow. At the far end of the room stood a large archway, its frame shimmering with a translucent barrier of energy.
"That must be the way out," Gon said, pointing toward the archway.
Kilua frowned. "Don't rush in. This place reeks of traps."
Before they could move, a deep rumble echoed through the chamber, and the ground beneath them began to tremble. From the shadows, a massive figure emerged—a towering construct of stone and energy, its form crackling with dark Nen. Its eyes glowed with an eerie light as it focused on Kilua and Gon.
"That's... new," Gon muttered, his fists tightening.
The construct let out a deafening roar, its sound reverberating through the chamber. It raised one massive arm and slammed it into the ground, sending a shockwave toward the two boys. Kilua and Gon leapt in opposite directions, narrowly avoiding the impact.
"Gon, we have to figure out its weak point!" Kilua shouted, activating his Godspeed. He darted toward the construct, his movements a blur as he struck at its joints with his Lightning Palm. Sparks flew, but the attacks seemed to have little effect on the creature's hardened exterior.
Gon, meanwhile, charged head-on, his Nen flaring as he prepared a Jajanken: Rock. "If it doesn't have a weak point, I'll make one!" he yelled, slamming his fist into the creature's leg. The impact cracked the stone, but the construct barely staggered.
"It's too tough," Kilua said, regrouping with Gon. "We're not going to break it with brute force alone."
The construct turned toward them, its glowing eyes narrowing. It raised both arms, summoning tendrils of dark energy that lashed out like whips. Kilua and Gon dodged expertly, but the relentless assault forced them to separate again.
As Kilua evaded the attacks, his sharp mind analyzed the construct's movements. It's not just a mindless beast. It's following a pattern, like the tendrils from before. If I can disrupt its energy flow...
"Gon, keep it busy!" Kilua shouted, darting toward the archway.
"On it!" Gon replied, charging at the construct with renewed vigor. He unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks, his attacks creating shockwaves that echoed through the chamber.
Kilua reached the base of the archway, his eyes scanning the glowing symbols etched into its frame. He noticed that the patterns pulsed in sync with the construct's movements, as if they were connected.
The archway's powering it, Kilua realized. If I can overload the energy flow, it'll collapse.
He placed his hands on the symbols, his Lightning Palm crackling with intensity. Concentrating his Nen, he sent a surge of electricity into the patterns, disrupting their rhythm. The archway's glow flickered, and the construct let out a guttural roar, its movements becoming sluggish.
"Gon, now! Hit it with everything you've got!" Kilua yelled.
Gon grinned, his aura blazing brighter than ever. "You got it!" He channeled all his energy into a massive Jajanken: Rock, his fist glowing with raw power. With a fierce cry, he slammed his attack into the construct's chest. The impact shattered the creature's core, sending shards of stone and energy flying in all directions.
As the construct crumbled, the room fell silent, save for the heavy breathing of Kilua and Gon. The barrier over the archway dissolved, revealing a narrow passage beyond.
"We did it," Gon said, a triumphant smile on his face.
Kilua nodded, though his expression remained serious. "This was just another step. Whoever's behind this isn't done with us yet."
Together, they stepped through the archway, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in the depths of the abyss.
