Chapter 4
Strength in Unity
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the forest floor as the group moved deeper into the woods. The air was filled with the scent of pine and earth, the occasional rustling of leaves hinting at creatures hidden just out of sight. Roman’s heart raced with anticipation as they ventured into an area that seemed to teem with life—and danger.
“Stay close,” Z said, his voice low but commanding. “There are usually packs of monsters around here. We don’t want to get separated.”
They formed a loose circle, weapons ready. Lexi took point, her bow nocked and eyes scanning the tree line. Z moved into the front line next to Lexi to fulfill his role as tank, Seth and Roman took the flanks, moving with quiet precision, Jessika held the rear, their eyes alert for any signs of movement.
They didn’t have to wait long. As soon as the fighting started Lexi did an acrobatic flip and ended up next to Jessika at the rear. She didn’t need to risk herself being up front if there was no scouting to be done.
A rustling from the underbrush caught their attention, and a moment later, a pack of creatures burst from the trees. They were wolf-like, but larger, with twisted limbs and dark fur matted with mud and blood. Their eyes glowed with a predatory hunger as they snarled and snapped, circling the group.
“Dire wolves,” Z muttered, raising his sword. “About six of them. Lexi, take out the leader first.”
Lexi nodded, drawing her bowstring back and letting an arrow fly. It struck one of the largest wolves in the eye, and it dropped instantly, the other wolves hesitating for a split second.
Roman didn’t wait. He felt the energy surging through his core, his muscles thrumming with a power that begged to be released. He launched himself forward, his sword slicing through the air. One moment he was standing beside Seth, and the next he was in the midst of the pack, his blade cutting through the nearest wolf like it was nothing.
The creatures barely had time to react. Roman moved with an almost unnatural speed, his body a blur as he weaved between the wolves, striking with precision and power. Each step seemed to carry him ten times as far as it should, his sword flashing in the dappled sunlight as he struck again and again. To the others, it looked as though he was teleporting, his form flickering in and out of sight as he darted around the battlefield.
“Holy—!” Jessika’s exclamation was cut off as she swung her staff, knocking a wolf aside that had tried to flank her.
Roman’s sword struck another wolf, cleaving through its shoulder. He spun away from a snapping maw, his movements fluid and effortless. The wolves were fast, but he was faster. He could feel the power coursing through him, each strike landing with deadly precision. It was as if time itself slowed down for him, every motion calculated, every step perfect.
Seth moved in tandem with him, his own style complementing Roman’s speed. He darted in and out of the shadows, his daggers flashing as he struck at exposed flanks and vulnerable joints. Together, they carved through the pack, the wolves howling in pain and fury as they tried and failed to counter the relentless assault.
Z charged forward, his shield raised as he bashed a wolf aside, his sword coming down in a heavy arc that cleaved through bone and sinew. “Keep it up!” he shouted, his voice filled with the thrill of battle.
Lexi loosed arrow after arrow, each one finding its mark with deadly accuracy. The wolves fell one by one, their bodies littering the ground. Jessika moved behind them, her staff glowing with a soft light as she cast spells that bolstered their strength and healed their minor injuries.
Roman felt invincible. He moved faster and struck harder than he ever had before, his sword an extension of his will. He slipped between the wolves like a shadow, his blade cutting through them with ease. The last wolf lunged at him, its jaws snapping shut just inches from his face. He pivoted, his sword slicing through its neck in a single, clean motion.
The clearing fell silent, save for the labored breathing of the group. The ground was strewn with the bodies of the wolves, their dark blood soaking into the earth. Roman stood amidst the carnage, his chest heaving, his sword dripping with blood. He glanced at the others, their eyes wide with a mixture of shock and awe.
“That was… insane,” Lexi breathed, lowering her bow.
“You moved like—like you were teleporting,” Jessika said, her eyes wide. “How did you do that?”
Roman hesitated, wiping the blood from his sword. “I don’t really know,” he said truthfully. “It just… happens.”
Z clapped him on the shoulder, nearly knocking him off balance. “Whatever it is, it’s incredible. I’ve never seen anyone move like that.”
“Yeah, no kidding,” Seth added, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied Roman. “That must be an awesome skill like Swift or something.”
“Actually I don’t know. How can I search my skills?” Roman asked playing dumb while also trying to see how their systems worked. He saw the notification when he learned
“Oh you need to visit a temple for that and use the Searching Stone. It pretty much does as it says, it searches your body and soul for your levels, titles, and skills. Or if you could afford a searching stone you could do it outside of the temple but those are insanely expensive.” Seth answered and Roman nodded.
They spent the rest of the day training together, honing their skills and learning to fight as a unit. Roman found himself slipping into a rhythm with the others, their movements becoming more coordinated as they took on more packs of creatures. He used his speed to draw attention, darting in and out of reach, while Seth struck from the shadows. Lexi provided cover from a distance, her arrows never missing their mark, and Z and Jessika held the line, their combined strength a solid bulwark against any threat.
With each battle, Roman’s confidence grew. He learned to control his speed better, focusing the energy in his core to move even faster, strike even harder. He felt the thrill of combat, the exhilaration of testing his limits and pushing beyond them. But he was careful not to let himself go too far. He didn’t want to reveal too much, to show them just how different he really was.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting the forest in hues of gold and crimson, they finally made their way back to camp. They were all tired, their bodies sore and bruised, but the camaraderie between them was palpable.
“Not bad for a day’s work,” Z said, dropping heavily onto a log by the fire. “We made some real progress today.”
“Agreed,” Seth said, stretching his arms over his head. “Roman, you were incredible out there. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Roman shrugged, trying to downplay his abilities. “I just do what I can.”
“Well, whatever it is, it’s working,” Lexi said, handing him a water skin. “You’re a natural.”
Roman took the water skin, his thoughts swirling. He couldn’t deny the sense of satisfaction he felt, the pride in what they had accomplished together. But there was also a nagging worry. He was getting closer to them, feeling a bond forming, but he still had to keep his secrets.
As the night deepened and the stars began to twinkle overhead, they sat around the fire, sharing stories and laughter. Seth regaled them with tales of growing up in the capital, his words slipping here and there, hints of a life much more privileged than he wanted to admit.
“You know, back when I was a kid, we had this huge banquet hall,” Seth said, then caught himself, glancing around quickly. “I mean, not we—one of the noblemen my dad worked for in the capital did.
Z raised an eyebrow, smirking. “Oh really? A banquet hall in the capital? What kind of kid gets to see that?”
Seth coughed, looking away. “Just, you know… those official tour things. For kids. To see the, uh, history and stuff.”
Roman hid a smile, listening to Seth’s awkward attempts to cover his slip. It was becoming clearer that Seth wasn’t just an ordinary adventurer. But he wasn’t about to press the issue. They all had their secrets.
The conversation turned lighter as the night wore on, the fire crackling softly as they shared more about themselves. Roman felt a strange warmth spread through him, a sense of belonging he hadn’t felt in a long time. He still had a lot to learn, a lot to figure out, but for now, he was content.
As they settled down to sleep, Roman lay on his back, staring up at the stars. He didn’t know what the future held, but he knew he was no longer alone. He had allies, friends even, and together they were stronger than any of them could be alone.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new battles to fight.
