Chapter 119: Cadre
"This place is really special, isn't it?" Liu Xiaolei's eyes lit up.
Xiao Han took a look around and noticed the restaurant was doing quite well. He immediately came up with the idea of starting a rural retreat. If the business went well, it might just be profitable. The retreat would focus on green organic food. Xiao Han quickly devised a rough plan to open a high-grade rural retreat on the outskirts of the city and then create some gimmicks and intriguing stuff.
Perhaps this could be a very profitable business.
"Xiao Lei!" Fan Jian waved from a distance.
"Xiao Han, let's go over," Liu Xiaolei was holding onto Xiao Han's arm the whole time.
Fan Jian, seeing this scene, felt somewhat displeased, but he did not show it. He walked over with a smile and then said, "Our old classmates have been waiting just for you."
"Who all are here?" Liu Xiaolei asked curiously.
"Who else could it be? A few primary school classmates," Fan Jian chuckled.
They passed through the lobby and entered a private room, which was very warm inside. Everyone had taken off their coats, wearing woolen sweaters or undershirts. There were about a dozen people inside, all busy chatting.
"Classmates, Liu Xiaolei is here!" Fan Jian shouted loudly.
Everyone turned their heads.
"Yo, is that Liu Xiaolei?" someone exclaimed, saying, "How did she become so beautiful?"
"My God, if I didn't know better, I'd think she was a celebrity!" everyone exclaimed.
Liu Xiaolei, on the other hand, blushed at this boisterous scene. Honestly, among the more than ten people here, Liu Xiaolei probably couldn't name three. She recognized one of the girls; they were from Fuxing Community and used to be close. They had been at the same school during secondary school but had drifted apart after university and had not seen each other since.
She was surprised to bump into her here.
"Xiao Mei," Liu Xiaolei said in surprise, looking at her.
"Haha, Liu Xiaolei, you still recognize me?" Chen Dongmei laughed heartily.
"How could I not recognize you? We were best friends back then," Liu Xiaolei excitedly hugged Chen Dongmei.
Xiao Han just stood at the door alone, not knowing anyone in the room, and they all seemed so mature. They had been working for one, two, or even more years. And there he was, not even in university yet. In front of this group, Xiao Han obviously seemed naive.
Seeing Liu Xiaolei getting along well with a group of classmates, Fan Jian quickly pulled Xiao Han out.
"Xiao Han, you... you go back first, and I'll take Xiao Lei home later!" Fan Jian hurriedly said.
"No way!" Xiao Han immediately shook his head, saying, "Since I brought her here, I must take her back."
"Fine, fine, I'll give you a hundred bucks!" Fan Jian quickly pulled out a hundred bucks from his pocket, saying, "You go find a cyber café to play, or find somewhere to eat. This is a place for our primary school reunion."
Xiao Han was dumbfounded. Wasn't this discriminating against him?
Fan Jian knew Xiao Han's family was quite poor. He had never seen so much pocket money before. He smiled and said, "What? Haven't seen so much pocket money before? Hurry and take it, otherwise, I might change my mind."
"Fan Jian, you really think highly of me," Xiao Han chuckled and then said, "A hundred bucks just to get rid of me, think I'm a beggar?"
"Wow, you're not big, but you've got a big mouth!" Fan Jian responded immediately, saying, "How much do you want then, kid?"
"Here's the deal, I'll give you five hundred to leave," Xiao Han said as he pulled out five hundred bucks from his pocket and said, "Besides, I'll cover the meal. How about that?"
Fan Jian was dumbfounded.
He was not just surprised that Xiao Han could pull out five hundred bucks right there, but more surprised that Xiao Han had come up with such a calm response. That was what truly shocked Fan Jian. He did not know what to do for a moment.
Just then, Liu Xiaolei came out the door.
"What are you guys doing?" Liu Xiaolei frowned.
"Ah, nothing... nothing!" Fan Jian quickly shook his head, saying, "I was just chatting with Xiao Han, was asking him how his mom resolved that thing last time."
"What thing?" Liu Xiaolei asked curiously.
"Nothing!" Xiao Han decisively interrupted Fan Jian and interjected, "He's talking nonsense."
Liu Xiaolei looked puzzled, glanced at Fan Jian, and then at an unhappy Xiao Han. She pulled on Xiao Han's arm, saying, "Come on in, the waiter is serving the food."
Watching Liu Xiaolei pull Xiao Han inside, Fan Jian was suddenly filled with anger. He had nowhere to vent.
Bang!
Fan Jian turned around and kicked all his anger onto a nearby stone stool.
"Ouch!" To his surprise, the stone stool was actually made of real stone and not a resin substitute. Instantly, the pain had Fan Jian howling in agony. His toes were probably swollen. He could only endure the severe pain as he limped toward the private room. Inside, everyone seemed very lively.
After Fan Jian entered, a man grabbed his arm and laughed, "If we're talking about who's really made it, it has to be our classmate Fan Jian. Classmate Fan is the office director of our district's street office. Tsk tsk, he's really got power in his hands."
"Indeed, I even sought Classmate Fan's help with something last time. Reliable!" someone quickly stood out to praise him.
"Guys, stop teasing me," Fan Jian said helplessly, waving his hand, "Working as a civil servant isn't easy. The pay isn't great, and you end up offending people. Moreover, now the Central Government has imposed eight regulations for officials, so it's even tougher."
"Haha…" Everyone burst into laughter.
"You talk as if it's real," the man by his side also started laughing and said, "Everyone in office claims it's tough, that there's no money. I'd actually like to be an official. I don't need a salary; let me serve the people instead."
"Haha…" The man's remark suddenly had everyone roaring with laughter.
Fan Jian didn't get angry. He gestured with his hands, showing a bit of an official's air. He smiled and then said, "Guys, stop making fun of me. It's rare for all of us to gather together once a year, and there are so many of us today, which is really rare.
It's been over a decade since we graduated from elementary school, and although we haven't been in touch for many years, we are all children of the Fuxing Factory, offspring of the workers and peasants. Alright, everyone please take your seats. This meal, I'll treat."
"Classmate Fan, how can we let you pay?" a man in a suit quickly said, "You helped me so much last time, and I haven't thanked you properly. Let's use this chance, and I'll pay for this meal."
"Classmate Li, that was a small matter," said Fan Jian cheerily, "Remember, don't steal my thunder today. I specially invited Xiao Lei for this meal."
"Ah…" Hearing this, the man in the suit realized something and said, "Classmate Fan, my apologies. I'll punish myself with a drink later."
"You said it," Fan Jian sat down. Everyone else also took their seats except for the one next to Fan Jian, which remained empty.
However, there were still two people standing, those were Xiao Lei and Xiao Han. The scene, the situation, seemed as if it had been arranged just so. Xiao Han frowned, and Xiao Lei hadn't expected Fan Jian to be so malicious within, likely making things difficult for Xiao Han.
"Waiter, add a chair!" Xiao Lei calmly and composedly pulled Xiao Han's hand and said, "Xiao Han, you sit first."
Xiao Han didn't hesitate and sat down next to Fan Jian.
Everyone at the table curiously watched Xiao Han. Xiao Han was completely unafraid and nervous; he looked very calm as he met everyone's gaze. His eyes were very clear, and with a smile, he slowly took off his jacket and hung it on the chair.
Fan Jian's expression darkened even more, regretting setting up this scenario. He hadn't ensnared the other party but had trapped himself instead. Xiao Han appeared very composed, and not long after, the waiter brought over the chair.
"Put it here!" Xiao Lei pointed to the right side of Xiao Han, just between Xiao Han and Fan Jian.
"Maybe put it here?" Fan Jian quickly spoke up.
"No need, I'll sit next to Xiao Han," Xiao Lei herself pushed the chair in, and everyone else shifted their chairs so that Xiao Lei could sit down.
Fan Jian was angry, but he couldn't show it.
"Today, it's rare for so many of our classmates to come together. We're not going home until we're drunk!" Fan Jian said with a smile.
"Exactly, not going home until we're drunk!" everyone nodded in agreement.
Chen Dongmei leaned close to Xiao Lei and whispered, "Fan Jian seems unhappy."
"Who cares," Xiao Lei shook her head dismissively, "He's just narrow-minded. He's just making himself angry, who else is to blame?"
The voice wasn't loud, but everyone at the scene heard it very clearly.
This made things awkward, and the atmosphere suddenly grew colder.
"Pour the drinks, pour the drinks," the man in the suit hastily broke the awkward silence and said, "I spoke out of turn just now, let me penalize myself with a drink first. Haha…"
After speaking, he raised his glass and drank it all at once.
"Good!" The men at the scene clapped their hands.
At the dinner table, drinking was the best way to lift the mood. One person started, and naturally, others followed. Glasses were clinked, and after a few drinks, the man in the suit looked at Xiao Han with a smile and asked, "Brother Xiao Han, you… you're not from our class, right?"
"I brought him here," Xiao Lei spoke up.
"Isn't that inappropriate?" Riding on the booze, the man in the suit also tried to curry favor with Fan Jian.
From the moment Xiao Lei brought Xiao Han in, he had seen that Fan Jian had a significant issue with Xiao Han, seeming a bit unhappy. So, naturally, he had to find the right moment to curry favor with Fan Jian. Although Fan Jian's official position at the street office wasn't high, who knows what level he might reach in the future?
It's better to send coal in snowy weather than to add flowers on the brocade.
