Sanctuary: Safe Haven

Chapter 249: Reunion

The aftermath of Solara and Zephyros' clash was evident in the surrounding forest. Their brief but powerful exchange had left the once serene area in ruins. Trees were uprooted, grass flattened in wide swathes, and small fissures had cracked open the earth beneath their feet. The raw power of two disaster-ranked wolves was an overwhelming force, and their reunion had tested the very landscape.

High above, Canna hovered in the sky, watching the destruction unfold below. It wasn't a fight born of malice, but the intensity of their emotions had spilled into their power. Now, as he saw the wolves nuzzling each other affectionately, the tension dissipating between them, he decided it was safe to return.

Canna landed gracefully on the ground before the wolves, his white cloak with gold edges billowing slightly in the breeze. Zephyros, still on edge from the battle, immediately turned his gaze toward Canna, his stance shifting from calm to one of hostility.

"I've noticed you before, little fly," Zephyros growled menacingly, his violet eyes narrowing. "Do you have a death wish?"

The sudden aggression caught Solara off guard, her eyes widening in surprise. In the blink of an eye, the situation escalated. Canna didn't flinch, though. His calm demeanor remained, but in an instant, the shadows around him stirred.

In less than a second, the ground around Canna erupted, and hundreds of orcs—undead warriors summoned from the depths—appeared out of nowhere. Their hulking forms, covered in battle-scarred armor, surrounded Canna, weapons raised, and eyes gleaming with the eerie light of undeath.

At the forefront stood the disaster-ranked Grakthar, a towering undead orc with crimson war paint streaked across his decayed body. His generals flanked him, each one armed and ready for battle.

Zephyros, taken aback by the sheer number of enemies, instinctively shifted his stance. His fur bristled, and the shadows around him began to swirl. He was ready to fight, but his sharp eyes noticed something peculiar—something slithering out of Canna's shadow.

Mortem emerged from the darkness, his skeletal frame standing tall and commanding. His piercing eyes glowed with a malevolent light, and in one hand, he carried his staff—an ancient relic pulsing with dark energy. Mortem's presence was menacing, his aura oppressive, a stark contrast to the calm that surrounded Canna.

"Insolent fool," Mortem hissed, his voice dripping with contempt as he locked eyes with Zephyros. The shadows around Mortem writhed and twisted like living things, adding to the dark, foreboding atmosphere.

The tension was suffocating. Zephyros and Mortem were ready to tear into each other, their power radiating from them in palpable waves. The wind howled, and the earth itself seemed to groan under the weight of their impending clash. Canna, still standing between them, glanced at both parties with a calm, almost amused expression.

Just when it seemed that the two forces would collide, a chuckle echoed through the clearing. It was Canna, his laughter cutting through the thick atmosphere. "Nice to meet you too, black wolf," Canna said casually, his voice light. "But I'd recommend not saying something like that again. My subordinates are…extra sensitive."

Canna gestured toward the orc army and Mortem, who still held his staff in a ready position. Zephyros' eyes flicked between them, wary but curious. His gaze fell on Solara, who stood at Canna's side, her posture relaxed and her expression calm.

"Your mate should have told you," Canna continued, a slight grin on his face. "She's one of my subordinates now."

Zephyros' eyes widened in shock. He had sensed Solara's aura the moment she arrived—he knew she was powerful, a disaster rank like himself—but to see her standing beside Canna, not as an equal, but as a subordinate? It didn't make sense. How could a being of her rank submit to someone like him—a mere mid-transcendent?

Zephyros looked back at Solara, searching her face for an explanation. Her golden eyes met his, and she nodded firmly, her approval clear.

"There's a lot I need to tell you, Zephyros," Solara said softly, stepping closer to him. "I found a beautiful place—a paradise for our kind."

Hours passed, and Zephyros found himself sitting across from Solara, his expression filled with disbelief. He had always been skeptical of stories that sounded too good to be true, and this one seemed impossible. Solara had just finished recounting the story of how she had been abducted by the orcs, bound and forced to submit to their leader.

She had fought for her freedom, never breaking, and just when it seemed like all hope was lost, Canna had saved her. He had cut her chains, freed her from the torment, and introduced her to a world beyond anything she had ever imagined.

"It was a place I could only dream of," Solara said, her voice filled with wonder. "The sanctuary is everything we've ever wanted, Zephyros. A home where we can live without fear, without constant battles. It's a paradise."

Zephyros' eyes narrowed as he took in her words. He didn't want to outright call her a liar, but everything about her story seemed too perfect. A sanctuary? A place where disaster-ranked beings could live in peace without being hunted or forced into endless conflict? It sounded like a fairytale.

"You really expect me to believe that?" Zephyros growled, his voice laced with doubt. "A place like that doesn't exist."

Solara met his gaze, unflinching. "I know it's hard to believe, but it's real. I've seen it with my own eyes, and I've lived there. It's everything I've ever wanted for us, for our pack."

Zephyros shook his head, his skepticism apparent. "A paradise…for us?" he muttered under his breath. "Where's the catch? What price do you pay for living in a place like that?"

Solara's golden eyes softened as she took a step closer to him. "There's no catch, Zephyros. It's not perfect, but it's a place where we can thrive. Where our pack can be safe. You just have to trust me."

Zephyros' doubt lingered in his eyes, but there was something in Solara's voice that made him pause. He had known her for years, fought beside her, trusted her instincts—and she had never led him astray before.

Solara stepped even closer, her gaze steady. "Do you want to see it for yourself?" she asked, her voice a soft challenge.

Zephyros hesitated, his eyes flicking back and forth as he weighed his options. After a long moment, he sighed and looked at her. "Alright. Show me."

Solara turned to Canna, who had been watching the exchange from a respectful distance. "Canna-sama, can we show him? Can we show him the sanctuary?"

Canna smiled, nodding gently. "Of course. But you'll need to convince him that the pack will be safe while you're gone."

Solara turned back to Zephyros, her voice calm but persuasive. "The pack will be fine. This won't take long, and once you see the sanctuary, you'll understand."

Zephyros studied her for a moment before nodding slowly. "Lead the way."
