Chapter 163: The Harbinger Of The Sanctuary
A month had passed, and the echoes of Canna's relentless assault on the kingdom of Arenthia had begun to fade into the annals of legend. The kingdom, once a bastion of power and control, had been systematically dismantled from within by an unseen force that left no trace but devastation and fear.
The final chapter of Canna's mission was drawing to a close, and with it, the weight of his objectives began to lift from his shoulders.
The noble responsible for the slave collars, a man whose name had been whispered in fear throughout the dark alleys of Arenthia, lay dead in his own chambers. Canna's strike had been swift and precise, his powerful subordinates ensuring that no one escaped the purge. Continue reading stories on empire
Mortem's shadows had crept through the walls like a dark plague, strangling the life out of guards and servants before they could even cry for help. Vorgrim's blade had sung through the air, cutting down those who dared to stand in his way. Grimruk's brute strength had crushed doors, walls, and men alike, leaving nothing but destruction in his wake.
By the time the kingdom's forces arrived, the noble's mansion was a tomb. The bodies of the noble's loyal men lay scattered across the floor, their lifeless eyes staring into the void. The once-grand residence, a symbol of wealth and power, was now a mausoleum of death and decay. There was no sign of the attackers, no evidence of who had wrought such destruction.
Only the knowledge that their master, the one who held the keys to so many chains, was gone forever.
Back in the sanctuary, the news of the noble's death spread like wildfire. Then, almost as if by magic, slave collars began to drop from the necks of those who had been bound for so long. The ground was soon littered with the cold metal bands that had once represented their oppression. Cries of joy and relief filled the air as the newly freed inhabitants of the sanctuary celebrated their liberation.
Tears streamed down their faces as they cheered, their voices lifted in thanks to the man who had brought them freedom.
Canna stood at the edge of the crowd, watching the scene unfold. There was a deep sense of satisfaction in his heart, knowing that he had struck at the very heart of the kingdom's corruption. The noble, and all he represented, was no more. It was a victory, not just for him, but for everyone who had suffered under the kingdom's cruel rule.
But his work wasn't finished yet.
Canna's thoughts turned to the squatters' district, a place where the destitute and the desperate clung to life with whatever strength they had left. It was a place of misery, where the weak were preyed upon by the strong, and where hope was a luxury few could afford. Canna knew that not everyone there could be saved—some had chosen a path of darkness and violence that left no room for redemption.
But there were others, those who had been beaten down by life but still held onto a sliver of hope. They were the ones he sought to rescue.
With the same precision and determination, Canna had moved through the squatters' district, rescuing those who were still clinging to life. The abused, the pregnant, the malnourished—these were the ones he brought back to the sanctuary. But for every soul he saved, there were others who had given up, their spirits broken beyond repair.
These, he left behind, knowing that even his sanctuary could not save those who had lost the will to fight.
Now, as he stood at the borders of Arenthia, Canna felt a sense of finality settle over him. He had done all he could here. The kingdom was in shambles, its foundations cracked and crumbling. The noble was dead, his wealth and influence meaningless.
The children from the orphanages, the slaves from the underground, and the destitute from the squatters' district were now safe within the sanctuary's embrace. There was nothing left to do but leave.
At his side stood Razgath, the black orc who had been freed from the deepest, darkest cell in the slavehouse. Razgath had fought alongside Canna and his subordinates, proving himself a formidable ally. But now, their paths were about to diverge.
Razgath turned to Canna, his crimson eyes reflecting the light of the setting sun. "Canna," he rumbled, his voice deep and resonant, "you've given me something I thought was lost forever. My freedom. For that, I owe you a debt I can never fully repay."
Canna shook his head with a small smile. "You don't owe me anything, Razgath. I freed you because no one deserves to be chained like that. What you do with your freedom is up to you."
Razgath extended his hand, and Canna clasped it in a firm handshake. "Thank you," Razgath said, his voice thick with emotion. "When my business is finished, I will find you again. And I will thank you properly, with the strength of my new life."
Canna nodded, watching as Razgath turned and began his journey into the wilds beyond the kingdom's borders. The black orc's silhouette slowly disappeared into the distance, a reminder that even in a world as harsh as theirs, second chances were possible.
With Razgath gone, Canna turned back to the sanctuary, his thoughts already shifting to the challenges that lay ahead. The external threats had been dealt with, but now came the harder task—fixing the internal problems that had arisen with the sanctuary's rapid growth. There were still shelters to build, people to manage, and resources to allocate.
The sanctuary had swelled in population almost overnight, and it would take every ounce of Canna's strength and leadership to keep it running smoothly.
As he entered the sanctuary, the weight of his responsibilities pressed down on him. The dwarves were working tirelessly to construct new homes and facilities, while the Sylphirs and Verdant Wardens labored to expand the land's revitalization. The sanctuary was a hive of activity, every resident working towards the common goal of making this place a true haven for all who sought refuge.
Canna knew that it would be hard work, but he was ready for it. He had gained so much from his journey to Arenthia—three legendary beasts now roamed freely within his sanctuary, their power a testament to the strength he had accumulated. He had liberated valuable people, ending a line of slavery that had stretched back generations. And most importantly, he had given hope to those who had none.
But as he looked out over his sanctuary, Canna couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. There were still dark forces at work in the world, threats that would one day come knocking on his door. He had built a sanctuary to protect those who could not protect themselves, but he knew that there would always be those who sought to tear it down.
For now, though, he could rest easy knowing that he had done everything he could to secure the sanctuary's future. The people he had saved were safe, the kingdom of Arenthia was in disarray, and his enemies were scattered and broken. But deep in his heart, Canna knew that peace was a fleeting thing in a world as cruel as theirs.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the sanctuary, Canna stood at the highest point of his domain, looking out over the land he had fought so hard to protect. The challenges ahead were daunting, but he was ready to face them head-on.
And with that resolve, he turned his back on the setting sun and descended the hill, ready to lead his people into the future. The Arenthia arc had come to a close, but the story of Canna Yakane, the Harbinger of Sanctuary, was far from over.
There was much work to be done.
The end of one chapter marked the beginning of another, and Canna was determined to see his vision through to the end.
