Chapter 96: You have to swallow it even if you don’t want to!
The Rise to Fame!
True fame!
But this wasn't about Sakura—it was about Kakashi.
In a one-on-one confrontation, he severed the Kazekage's arm and retreated unscathed!
The significance of this feat far surpassed the title of "Copy Ninja." Who had Kakashi faced before this?
Just some random Chūnin or Jōnin encountered during missions, and most of them were from smaller nations. Could shinobi from minor nations compare to those from the Five Great Nations?
And this time, Kakashi's opponent was none other than the Kazekage of Sunagakure!
One of the five most powerful shinobi in the world!
Now, Kakashi's reputation seemed to be eclipsing even that of Konoha's White Fang in his prime...
"Yo, Kakashi, this is for you!"
"Truly a tiger father without a dog son!"
"Keep working hard in the future!"
On the streets of Konoha, Kakashi carried bags upon bags of gifts, looking helplessly at the enthusiastic villagers.
"Ah… thank you…"
Faced with the villagers' unwavering kindness and their warm smiles, Kakashi couldn't bring himself to refuse.
"You're really popular, Kakashi," Asuma teased, a cigarette between his lips as he observed Kakashi's predicament.
"Don't even mention it. You know the truth just as well as I do."
With his signature dead-fish eyes, Kakashi glanced at Asuma.
The villagers' enthusiasm didn't bring him much joy—instead, it left him feeling unworthy of their praise.
This sense of inadequacy weighed heavily on him.
"Well, if that's the case, shouldn't you work even harder?"
"Don't slack off like you used to!"
"You need to live up to everyone's expectations!"
Asuma clapped a hand on Kakashi's shoulder with a hearty laugh.
Kakashi gave Asuma a wordless stare, feeling as though his carefree life was now a thing of the past.
"But speaking of which, where's Sakura?"
"She played a huge role in all of this!"
Asuma seemed to suddenly remember something, his tone curious.
"Sakura, huh…"
Inside the Hokage's Office
Reception Room
Sakura sat at the far end of the conference table, her face resting on one hand as she stared out the window at the white clouds, boredom written all over her face.
Currently, Hiruzen Sarutobi was discussing an alliance with Ōnoki.
Watching the two old men point fingers at each other over the alliance details made Sakura feel nothing but apathy.
If it weren't for Hiruzen insisting she attend, she wouldn't have bothered coming.
Tobirama Senju had already given her full access to the Senju Clan's library.
She'd much rather be researching materials on Yang Release there than wasting time here.
The Senju library didn't just contain knowledge about the Senju Clan—it also held information on the Uzumaki Clan.
After all, Hashirama Senju's wife, Mito Uzumaki, was the princess of the Uzumaki Clan.
Both clans excelled in physical strength and chakra reserves, making their expertise in Yang Release unparalleled.
Suddenly, a small white paper ball arced perfectly through the air toward Sakura's forehead.
Reacting swiftly, Sakura caught it between her slender fingers.
Looking up, she saw a sleek-haired girl across the room winking at her repeatedly.
Sakura opened the paper ball to find a line of delicate handwriting:
"Too boring. Want to sneak out?"
...Seriously? Do we even know each other that well?
Sakura glanced at Kurotsuchi, sitting opposite her, and couldn't help but twitch her lips.
This girl was overly friendly. Hadn't she said back in the Forest of Death that their next meeting wouldn't end so favorably for Sakura?
Sakura shifted her gaze to the two elders—Hiruzen and Ōnoki—arguing passionately over the alliance, flanked by Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado.
Ōnoki's willingness to negotiate suggested he wasn't opposed to the alliance.
In fact, the moment Ōnoki stepped into this room, the Fire-Earth Alliance was already as good as sealed.
The two old men were merely discussing what resources the Land of Fire would share with the Land of Earth.
As for military action against the Land of Wind, that wasn't something that could be resolved in a single day.
This would inevitably involve the Lands of Lightning and Water as well.
The issue was too complex, and specialists would be appointed to handle it later.
Moreover, if the Fire and Earth Nations were to form an alliance against the Land of Wind, they would need to secure the Land of Grass, the neutral buffer between them.
Sakura glanced at the two elders before winking at Kurotsuchi.
Kurotsuchi's face lit up with excitement. She promptly stood up, catching her father Kitsuchi's curious gaze.
"Kurotsuchi, what are you doing?"
"Bathroom."
Kurotsuchi's expression remained perfectly composed as the lie rolled off her tongue.
As she passed by Sakura, Sakura also stood up.
"And you?"
Koharu raised an eyebrow, her tone casual yet probing.
"Going together," Sakura replied with a calm, matter-of-fact expression.
The pink-haired girl's response left Koharu exasperated.
Did they really think she hadn't noticed their little scheme?
Couldn't they at least come up with a better excuse?
Hiruzen glanced at the two girls leaving and turned to Ōnoki with a smile.
"It seems the young ones are getting along unexpectedly well."
Ōnoki sighed helplessly at the sight, muttering, "My granddaughter lacks discipline. Apologies for the trouble."
Hiruzen waved it off with a laugh.
"Nonsense. If our villages' youths get along this well, isn't it a reflection of the friendship between Konoha and Iwagakure?"
"With this camaraderie among the young, we elders seem petty for nitpicking over minor details."
Ōnoki stroked his short beard, a smile spreading across his face as he nodded.
"Very well. In that case, let's proceed with your village's resource proposal."
"Thank you, Tsuchikage-sama," Hiruzen replied warmly.
"This alliance will be a symbol of the unbreakable bond between our nations," Hiruzen declared.
"It should be widely publicized so the world knows the strength of our friendship."
Ōnoki's expression remained unchanged, but he stood and extended a hand to Hiruzen, smiling as he said,
"As it should be."
Cunning old fox.
Hiruzen laughed heartily as he clasped Ōnoki's hand.
"You're truly decisive, Tsuchikage-sama!"
The unspoken words between them lingered:
You'll swallow this arrangement whether you like it or not!
Both sides stood and applauded, the sound echoing through the room.
Thus, the first alliance between the Lands of Fire and Earth was finalized with surprising ease.
