Rusted Professor

Chapter 6: Winter is coming

Boa dia pessoas,

[-]I know you're asking, "You said you weren't going to publish anything this year. What happened?" I decided to try my best and took a combo of Ritalin with caffeine (DON'T DO THAT!) and publish another chapter of each of my three fanfics. Why did I do this? To make a shoutout to my book "Virtude da Reincarnação" which is now on sale on Amazon.

[-]FOR SALE ON AMAZON! "Virtude da Reincarnação" is an isekai story set in a medieval fantasy world with gender morality reversal. The digital copy is R$ 10,00 (US$ 1,99) and the physical copy is not available outside of Brazil due to contractual reasons with the publisher... And if you like my work, help me by leaving a review on Amazon. I'm a newbie writer and I need all the help I can get.

[-] I'm getting ready to start another Isekai story, if you want to talk about the creation of the protagonist's powers, join my discord server: / 2EN3A6k2

(#)Now… let's go to the story!(#)

RP # POV: John Luna

On a beautiful morning like this, I would usually be going for a run or perhaps meditating outdoors to enhance my Aura control. But right now, I'm in my office with team RWBY, providing moral support to Blake as she talks about her past with her team.

"After the train separated, I came to Vale, applied for Beacon initiation, and met you," says Blake in a melancholic tone, finishing her story before coming to beacon.

Ruby and Yang exchange looks, speechless. Blake's revelation is a gut punch, but it's Weiss who really steals the show on how bad she takes the news. Her pale blue eyes are wide, her mouth hanging open in pure shock and horror.

"I-I don't care t-that you're a Faunus," Weiss stutters, her voice cracking. "But were you really a member of the White F-Fang?"

Blake looks away, her feline ears flattening in embarrassment.

"The same White Fang that killed my relatives and friends?" Weiss demands, raising her voice.

Blake tries to explain herself, her voice shaking slightly.

"Weiss… I never supported or carried out murder and torture. I was fighting for a better life for the Faunus, not for bloody revenge."

Despite Blake's plea, Weiss doesn't accept it easily. Her face distorts with a fury I've rarely seen in her.

"This doesn't change anything, Blake! You were part of a terrorist organization. I demand that you be expelled or at least transferred to another team."

Ruby, ever the peacemaker, immediately tries to intervene.

"Weiss, please calm down," Ruby says, placing herself between the two. "Blake is not your enemy. She left that life behind and is our teammate."

But Weiss isn't willing to listen. She turns to me, raising an accusatory finger at Blake.

"Professor Luna, you can't just ignore this. You need to take action now."

On the outside, I keep my expression neutral, but inside, I feel a pang in my heart. This behavior from Weiss makes me very disappointed in her.

'This situation is delicate and needs to be handled carefully,' I think silently. 'It's time to use the nuclear option.'

"You're right, Weiss," I say, surprising everyone present. "Ruby, Blake, and Yang, you can leave and get ready for your first classes," I add firmly, turning to the half-sisters. "I'm proud of you two."

Ruby smiles happily at the compliment while Yang turns away, her face slightly red. I'm quickly left alone with Weiss.

Weiss lifts her chin, her light blue eyes shining with an indignation I've never seen before—not in this timeline or another.

"It is an outrage that a Beacon professor would side with a terrorist instead of the SDC heiress."

Her voice is firm, but I can hear the slight tremor, a clear indication that she's holding in much more than she lets on. Her posture is rigid, hands clenched at her sides. She is trying to maintain her composure, but her mask of nobility is cracking.

I know this Weiss is used to having everything her way, but this isn't a competition between egos. This is about understanding that the world is not black and white.

"Weiss," my voice comes out harsher than I intended, "don't resort to your old, arrogant persona just because things didn't go the way you wanted."

Weiss freezes, her eyes widening in surprise. A blush spreads across her face, embarrassment clear in every line of her expression.

"The entire Beacon faculty is aware of Miss Belladonna's situation, including Professor Ozpin," I say loudly, imposing my authority as a teacher. "You can be sure that your life was never at risk."

She opens her mouth to speak, but the words don't come out. For the first time since I met her, Weiss Schnee is at a loss for words.

The tension in the office is palpable, the air heavy with unspoken emotions. I watch Weiss, waiting for her to process what I just said. She looks away, her shoulders slumping slightly. The mask of nobility completely crumbles, revealing the vulnerable girl behind it.

The silence stretches, but I don't interrupt.

Weiss finally lifts her head, embarrassment evident on her face. Taking a deep breath, Weiss calms down despite her eyes reflecting deep pain.

"You must understand. The White Fang... they are not just a violent organization to me. They are a nightmare. The threats, the displays of carnage and torture sent directly to my home... those images haunt me to this day."

Her voice shakes, but she continues, determined to make me understand.

"I saw things... things... heads of servants and friends sent to our house in white boxes. The messages were always so clear, so brutal. 'This is what happens to those who oppose the White Fang.' I couldn't understand; I couldn't process it."

She takes a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure.

"And now, I find out that someone I considered a friend, someone who sleeps in the same room as me, was part of this. How can I trust her again? How can I look at Blake and not see the carnage of the White Fang?"

Weiss looks away, her voice breaking.

"Sorry for feeling that way," Weiss begins until I interrupt her.

"No!" I exclaim in a firm tone. "You're not wrong for feeling that way."

I watch Weiss, her eyes shining with unshed tears. The vulnerability on her face is something I rarely see, and it reminds me how young she really is. The SDC heiress, the elegant noblewoman, is just a scared girl behind all that facade.

"Weiss," I begin, my voice soft but firm. "Your fear... is normal and expected. You've been through things no one should have to go through. The White Fang's violent actions have left deep scars on you, and that's not something that goes away easily."

Weiss looks up, surprised by my words. She expected a reprimand, a moral lesson, but not that.

"Your emotions are a natural reaction," I continue. "There's nothing wrong with being afraid, with feeling betrayed."

A sigh of relief escapes Weiss's lips. Her shoulders relax, the tension slowly dissipating.

"But," I add, and she stiffens again, "Blake wasn't responsible for the actions that haunt you, and she was honest with you. She confessed, even though she could lose everything. Now, it's up to you to process these feelings and decide how to deal with her."

Weiss looks away, her clear blue eyes reflecting a storm of emotions. She bites her lower lip, thoughtfully.

"I'm not saying you should forgive Blake immediately," I clarify. "Forgiveness is a process, and you should take as long as you need. But remember that you also came to Beacon trying to escape a fate that others were trying to push upon you."

Weiss nods, breathing slowly.

"You're right, Professor," she admits, her voice little more than a whisper. "I need time to think, to process all of this. But…thank you. Thank you for understanding, for not judging me."

I smile slightly, trying to calm her down.

"I'm here to help, Weiss. Whenever you need me."

RP # POV: Jaune Arc

I brought everyone from the JNPR team to study and do their classwork in the library. Silence and focus are what we need to complete our tasks.

But Nora... Nora has other plans.

"What a breakfast with team RWBY, huh?" Nora whispers, but her whisper is almost a scream. "They were so... so..."

"Nora, we're here to study," I interrupt, trying to keep my voice down.

"I know, I know!" She waves her hand, dismissing my concern. "Blake being a member of the White Fang during its violent phase is news to me, but the rest of team RWBY not knowing she was a Faunus is weird."

"Nora, you need to understand that Weiss is from Atlas," Ren interjects, his voice calm but firm. "It's possible she hasn't heard of Ghira Belladonna, as the violent version of the White Fang is much better known in Atlas than the original pacifist one."

Nora frowns, clearly unconvinced.

"Okay, but what about Ruby and Yang? They're from Vale and didn't know anything?"

Giving up on studying, I respond, trying to keep my voice down.

"Ruby and Yang didn't live in the capital, Nora. They grew up in Patch, a small rural island west of here. At the time of the protests, they were very young, no kids follow this kind of political news."

Nora crosses her arms, still not completely satisfied.

Pyrrha leans on the table, her eyes fixed on me.

"So Jaune, how did you know Blake was a Faunus?"

I look up from my books, surprised by the direct question.

On the first day of class, I mentioned to the rest of my team that Blake was a Faunus who was possibly hiding her identity to avoid discrimination.

"Well, in the town where I come from, Faunus and humans lived without much trouble. In fact, one of my sisters married a Faunus lawyer."

Nora gives a impish smile and speaks.

"Good to know I have a friend with lawyers in the family."

Ren's body shudders at the thought of the kind of trouble Nora could get into, knowing she has a lawyer to help her avoid consequences.

"At family gatherings, he would always talk about what was happening in the Faunus community," I say, putting down the book and giving up studying. "The White Fang's exchange of 'tactics' was something important and tragic, in his opinion."

Pyrrha frowns thoughtfully.

"I see... going from a pacifist organization to a violent one with a terrorist reputation is a pretty radical change."

I sigh heavily, remembering the intense conversations we had at the table baco at home.

"I remember him saying that Ghira Belladonna was devastated," I add, taking out my scroll and looking for a photo on the CCT network. "Blake shares the same last name, hair color, and eye color as the leading couple of the old White Fang, so I recognized her."

I found the photo quickly. It's an old image but sharp enough to make out the details. A peaceful White Fang protest, with banners and posters calling for equality and justice. In the center of the photo, a couple stands out: Ghira Belladonna, with his determined expression, and Kali Belladonna, with a soft but firm smile. Beside them, a little girl with cat ears, holding a sign bigger than her.

"Here," I say, turning the scroll so everyone can see. "These are Blake's parents. And this is her when she was little."

Nora leans in, eyes wide.

"Wow, she was cute!" says Nora, taking the scroll from my hand and sending a copy of the photo to herself.

Ren gives me a curious look.

"Why didn't you tell Ruby? You're friends, aren't you?"

I take back my scroll and return it to my pocket. Ren's question is valid, but the answer is not so simple.

"When I realized Blake was a Faunus, I thought about telling Ruby. But... I didn't know Blake's reasons for hiding her ears. If she was doing it, she must have had a good reason."

I shrug, looking at the table.

"So I decided not to interfere. If Blake wanted the others to know, she would tell them herself. It wasn't up to me to reveal her secret."

Nora nods, understanding.

"It makes sense. Blake has always been a bit reserved. It must have been difficult for her to let go of a secret like that..."

Pyrrha watches me, a soft smile on her lips.

"You did well, Jaune. Respecting others' privacy is important."

A dry cough cuts through the air, echoing through the library. We turn, and there's the librarian, her eyes sharp as daggers. She makes a sudden gesture, her index finger pressed against her pursed lips. The silence that follows is almost palpable.

"I'm sorry," I whisper, feeling my face heat up.

Nora stifles a laugh, but Ren gives her a stern look. Pyrrha, always the voice of reason, waves discreetly, signaling us to return to our studies.

The librarian watches us for a few more seconds, making sure we understand the message. Satisfied, she turns and disappears between the shelves, leaving us in awkward silence.

"I think we better concentrate," Ren mutters, opening his book again. Nora grimaces but picks up her notebook, starting to scribble notes.

Pyrrha gives me an encouraging look before diving back into her studies. I take a deep breath, trying to forget the drama of team RWBY to focus on my homework.

RP # POV: Weiss Schnee

I enter the CCT communication terminal. The screen in front of me displays crossed axes, the symbol of Vale. I take a deep breath, trying to center myself to talk to Winter.

I type in Winter's office number. The screen flashes, and I soon see my sister's familiar face: those steady light-blue eyes, her white hair tied into a sleek side ponytail. But something is different about her—she has deep, dark circles around her eyes.

"Greetings, Weiss, and I apologize for my appearance," Winter speaks in a formal tone with a hint of tenderness. "I'm really busy making preparations for General Ironwood. So let's get straight to the point. What is the serious matter you need help with?"

I swallow hard, worried about Winter work and health. Last thing I want is to be a burden for her.

"Maybe we should talk another time," I suggest in a nervous tone. "After all, your work is important."

Winter stares at me with a stern look that chills my soul. Even though she is tired and in another kingdom, she is able to project intensity through her posture.

"You are my sister, Weiss," she says in an authoritative tone. "You are important to me."

Winter's voice is firm, but there's genuine concern on it. Her eyes scan me through the screen, and I know she's trying to read every nuance of my expression.

I quickly explain Blake's situation. How she was a Faunus disguised as a human and how she is a former member of the White Fang.

When I mention that Blake is a Faunus, Winter raises an eyebrow in curiosity. But when I mention the White Fang, her eyes go wide.

"Now I feel like there's a knot in my chest that I can't untie. I felt... betrayed," I say, my eyes slightly teary. "But thanks to the help of a teacher, who stopped me from making hasty decisions, I had time to think. I feel a strange mix of guilt, anger, and confusion."

"It's to be expected that you're feeling confused," Winter adds without taking her eyes off me. "But what do you mean by anger and guilt?"

"I'm angry, but now, not just at her... I'm angry at myself. Because I realize that, perhaps, my prejudices still speak louder than they should. Maybe Blake has a reason for having joined them, maybe she's seen something I was never able to see. And now that she trusted me enough to reveal her past, I feel like I failed her by reacting with such venom."

On the other side of the screen, Winter rests her elbows on the table and puts her hands together, covering her mouth as she stares at me intensely.

"The SDC heiress sharing a room with a former White Fang member is unacceptable," Winter says in a firm, cold tone. "I'm sure our father would love to have someone bring you back to Atlas."

I choke up at Winter's raw and direct declaration.

"N-no, I-.I-." I stutter, shocked by what my sister said. "The last thing I want is to involve our father."

"I understand," Winter mutters, thinking. "Let's look at this in parts."

"Parts?" I repeat, confused.

"Blake Belladonna claims to be a former member of a terrorist organization known as the White Fang, right?"

I nod, confirming what she said.

"If she is lying and is an active member of the White Fang, then Blake Belladonna poses a threat in three different ways," Winter explains, keeping her stance firm.

"Three?" I question curiously.

"The first danger she poses is taking advantage of her position as your teammate to kill you, kidnap you, or do some other physical or psychological harm," she explains, looking at me seriously. "Has she done this to you?"

"No!" I exclaim in horror. "Blake has never done anything bad to me, directly or indirectly."

"Understood," Winter says, nodding. "The second danger she poses is information theft. Have you ever noticed your Scroll or material possessions in places you hadn't left them before?"

"No. My Scroll, especially, has location tracking. If someone used it at a time when I wasn't with it, I would know," I explain to Winter, continuing to talk.

"The third is the worst of all," Winter says, her face becoming even more serious, her heavy voice full of authority. "She could be a spy, pretending to be your friend so that in the future, when you have an important SDC position, she will take advantage of it. In a way, the third is a worse combination of the first and second, since, despite taking the longest, it's the one that has the potential to cause the most damage."

My jaw drops when Winter finishes speaking. She has broken down my fears into three easy-to-understand categories, but what is she going to say now? Is she going to use them as an argument to get me out of Beacon?

"The first scenario I think is more unlikely," Winter says, taking me by surprise. "She would have already acted if she were going to kill or kidnap you. Sleeping in the same room as you offers to many chances for that."

"I see..." I respond, a bit shocked at how easily Winter talks about my possible death or kidnapping.

"The second is unlikely but still has a chance of happening or having happened. My only certainty is that I know how well organized you are dear sister, so if someone else had touched your belongings, you would have noticed."

I puff out my chest proudly at the accidental compliment my sister made about me.

"Now the third, besides being the most dangerous, is also the most likely," Winter says, making me feel a weight in my stomach. "I don't rule out the possibility that this confession of hers is nothing more than an elaborate plan to gain your trust while she makes you lower your guard."

My breath hitches. The air feels thin, like I'm suffocating. The fear, the trepidation, the anger... everything comes back at once, engulfing me like a giant wave. My body freezes, cold sweat runs down my forehead, and my heart beats wildly.

Blake... what could she be planning for me?

"Winter..." My voice comes out shaky, almost a whisper. "How do I know if this is her plan? How can I be sure?"

Winter stares at me, her blue eyes steady and confident, contrasting with the whirlwind of emotions I feel.

"If Blake is a spy, she would act like a great friend, what young people call 'BFF'. She would be always around you, talking, smiling, gaining your trust. She would focus on doing activities with you. The more frivolous, the better, like buying school supplies, painting her nails, or even talking about boys."

"I felt so foolish for suspecting of Blake," I groan, frustrated and relieved.

My answer leaves Winter confused, and she looks at me curiously.

"Blake is the kind of person who reads books at the table when everyone is interacting socially," I explain in a dry and tired tone.

"That… is a high level of antisocial behaivor," Winter comments in surprise.

"She is reserved and distant and isolates herself from others, even her partner," I explain, listing some of the peculiarities of the feline Faunus. "Blake also doesn't like to talk, preferring monosyllabic answers, and always looks annoyed when someone greets her, as it takes her attention away from the book she was reading."

"Okay, Weiss, I understand," Winter says, raising her hands in a sign of defeat. "While I do not condone Miss Belladonna's behavior, there is nothing criminal about her antisocial conduct."

I laugh, a genuine sound that escapes my lips, filled with relief. The weight I've felt since early this morning finally lifts, and the tension in my shoulders melts away. Winter, on the other side of the screen, smiles. It's a discreet smile, but it's there, softening her always-so-serious features.

"It looks like you're feeling better already, Weiss," Winter says, her voice now softer, less military. "But now that you have a clear head, you must decide how to deal with your teammate."

A small laugh escapes my lips at Winter's last line.

"May I know what the humor is?" Winter asks, feigning indifference.

"A teacher gave me the same advice earlier," I explain, still smiling. "He told me not to make hasty decisions and to think carefully before acting."

Winter raises an eyebrow in surprise.

"A good teacher," Winter says, a tone of respect in her voice. "I imagine it was Professor Goodwitch who gave that advice."

"Actually, it wasn't her. It was her replacement," I explain, catching Winter's attention. "But despite only being in the position for a short time, Professor Luna has already proven himself to be an excellent mentor."

Winter freezes, her mouth open in shock. Her eyes, always so steady and confident, are now wide, reflecting a mixture of surprise and disbelief.

"Winter?" I call, trying to bring her back to reality. "Are you well?"

She blinks, trying to process what I just said. Her expression quickly changes, going from shock to confusion and finally to an attempt to regain her composure.

"Weiss..." Her voice is shaky, something rare for my always-so-controlled sister. "By any chance, would your teacher's name happen to be... John Luna?"

I nod, confirming.

"A tall man with blond hair and a full beard, fights with a sword and shield?" Winter asks without blinking.

"Yes, thats Professor John Luna. He is Professor Goodwitch's replacement. Do you know him?"

Winter swallows hard, and a strange smile widens on her face as her pupils dilate to a disturbing size.

"Yes, I do," Winter says, breathing heavier than normal. "I joined him on a mission against a group of bandits in Mistral."

I look at Winter, curious about the subject.

"I can't give you any more details due to the secret nature of the mission," Winter explains, calming down. "At first, I was suspicious of this mysterious man with no past who was always quiet and reserved."

'That odd,'* I think in silence. *'That doesn't sound anything like the fatherly gentleman with the warm smile who replaced Professor Goodwitch.'

"But he proved himself in combat, a warrior like no other, I couldn't keep up with," Winter says, holding her face with both hands.

I knew Professor Luna was incredible, but hearing that Winter wasn't on the same level as him was surprising.

"And besides being a great fighter…" Winter mutters, her cheeks turning pink and her eyes glassy. "He didn't think twice about jumping in front of lightning to protect me."

"Lightning?" I question in surprise.

"He received the blow without screaming or even complaining," Winter says in an excited tone I've never heard her use before. "He simply walked toward his opponent while being electrocuted, ignoring all the pain he felt."

"By the gods," I murmur, impressed.

"And after the fight, he came to me, asked me if I was okay, and used his Semblance to heal me," Winter comments, now smiling with a tone of joviality. "He is a monster to his enemies and a benevolent gentleman to his allies…"

"Winter, is it just me, or do you… have saliva dripping from the corner of your mouth?"

Winter quickly wipes her mouth and responds hastily.

"No, it's nothing like that!" she exclaims, her cheeks flushed. "I need to go, Weiss. I have urgent matters to attend to."

As soon as the screen turns off, I start to ponder a hypothesis.

"Do Winter and Professor Luna have history together?" I question in surprise.

I decided to put that thought out of my mind. After all, despite being shocked by my sister's behavior, I need to focus on what I'm going to say to Blake.

Boa noite pessoas,

[-] About my book Virtue of Reincarnation:

I'm not going to put a link to buy the product here in the body of the Fic because I post the same text on several sites... and some of them don't like links in their text.

To encourage you to buy my book, I ran it through artificial intelligence and asked it to give me positive and negative reviews of "Virtue of Reincarnation" (No Spoilers):

Here are positive and negative reviews of "Virtue of Reincarnation".

Overall, the excerpts from "Virtue of Reincarnation" offer a promising start to a fantasy adventure. While some areas could benefit from further development, the story's captivating premise, engaging characters, and thrilling action sequences have the potential for an enjoyable reading experience.

#Positive Reviews:

- Intriguing Premise: The story features a unique blend of reincarnation, fantasy, and RPG elements, creating a potentially captivating narrative. The protagonist's journey through an unknown world with "gamer-like" skills holds the promise of adventure and discovery.

- Engaging Characters: The characters, particularly Galene and Hadriana, are portrayed as caring and supportive figures, adding depth and warmth to the narrative. Galene's motherly nature and Hadriana's loyalty create strong emotional connections with the protagonist and the reader.

- Fast action: The excerpts show intense action sequences, such as battles with bandits, injecting excitement and a sense of danger into the story.

- World-building potential: The excerpts offer glimpses into a unique world with distinctive features such as four moons, a matriarchal society, and a complex magical system, leaving room for further exploration and development.

# Negative reviews:

- Limited character development: Although the excerpts introduce several characters, their backstories and motivations remain largely unexplored. A deeper exploration of the characters' pasts and their relationships with each other could enrich the story.

- Info-dumping: the protagonist receives a significant amount of information about the world and his abilities through exposition and system messages, potentially overwhelming the reader. Integrating these details more organically into the narrative can improve the reading experience.

- Potentially problematic topics: the excerpts suggest a society where magic is forbidden to men and a hierarchy exists between men and women, raising concerns about potential gender inequality and power dynamics. It is crucial to deal with these topics sensitively and avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
