Running a Tavern as a Former Witch!

Chapter 15: Chase After Dark

The sun had just begun to rise, casting a soft golden light over the tavern as we prepared for our journey.

Vernon, ever the dramatist, was the first to break the morning silence. “Ah, my dear companions,” he declared, striking a pose by the window. “Today, we embark on a quest that will be sung about for ages. A tale of bravery, danger, and perhaps a touch of romance.”

Levi, who was meticulously packing his satchel with various holy artifacts, raised an eyebrow but said nothing. His calm demeanor always brought a sense of balance to Vernon’s theatrics. “We must remain focused, Vernon. The Cult of Shadow Circle will not be easily defeated.”

“Indeed, my stoic friend,” Vernon replied with a wink. “But where is the fun in a journey without a little flair?”

I could not help but smile at their banter as I secured the Staff of Aether to my back. Turning to our guild leader, Sera, I said, “Thank you for your support, Sera. We could not do this without the guild’s resources.”

Sera nodded, her expression one of resolute determination. “I’ve arranged for additional supplies to be delivered to the Crystal Caves and the Enchanters’ Tower. Our scouts will ensure safe passage through the most dangerous areas. And I’ve also sent word to our allies in the surrounding villages. They will assist you if needed.”

“Your efficiency is, as always, impressive,” Vernon said with a dramatic bow. “I feel safer already.”

Levi gave a small nod of approval. “Thank you, Sera. Your preparations will make a significant difference.”

With everything ready, I made my way to the front of the tavern, where Ion was busy preparing breakfast for the early morning patrons. He looked up as I approached, his face lighting up with a warm smile. “Leaving already?”

I nodded. “Yes, Ion. I wanted to make sure everything is in order before we go.”

“The tavern will be fine,” he assured me. “I’ll keep everything running smoothly until you return. Just come back in one piece, alright?”

I smiled, feeling a swell of gratitude for his unwavering support. “I will. Take care, Ion.”

With our final preparations complete, we stepped outside, ready to begin our journey. The road ahead was long and fraught with peril, but I felt a renewed sense of purpose. We were no longer just reacting to the threats around us; we were taking the fight to the Cult of Shadow Circle.

As we set off, Vernon’s voice rang out with his usual flair. “Onward, to glory and adventure! Let the shadows tremble before us!”

Levi walked beside me, his presence a steadying force. “We will succeed,” he said quietly. “Let's turn this into a good memory. Shall we?”

I nodded, gripping the Staff of Aether tightly. “Yes, we will.” I smiled.

Levi glanced at me, his eyes softening for a moment. "In the midst of this chaos, I find a strange comfort in your presence. It's like finding a calm harbor in a stormy sea."

Caught off guard by his words, I felt a warmth spread through me. "Thank you, Levi. Your support means a lot."

He held my gaze a second longer, his voice barely above a whisper. "As long as we're together, I believe we can weather any storm."

His words, simple yet laden with hidden meaning, left me momentarily speechless. I managed a nod, feeling a deeper connection forming between us.
