Rule of Fate

Chapter 10: The Bonds

Campfire Nights: New Friendships and Stories

The campfire glowed warmly under the starlit sky. The group gathered around it after

another exhausting day of training, letting the heat of the fire and the camaraderie ease their aches. Vairaj sat between Zoya and Jerome, the latter tweaking his upgraded armor while Zoya kept stealing glances at Vairaj, who was unusually quiet.

Lisa: (stretching her arms far enough to grab a log from the pile) "So, what's today's topic? I vote for the most embarrassing moments during training!"

Logan: (grinning) "That's easy. Felix punching the training dummy in half. You should have seen his face afterward!"

Felix: (gruffly) "I thought it moved. I don't see you laughing when it's my punch saving you."

Everyone burst into laughter.

---

Introducing New Friends

Two new warriors joined the group at the fire. They had been training separately but had

grown curious about the lively bunch. One was a tall woman with short-cropped hair and an air of confidence, and the other was a lanky man who seemed perpetually cheerful.

Zoya: (noticing their approach) "New recruits to the fun circle?"

The Woman: (smiling) "Guess so. I'm Kaida. Heard you lot were the loudest around, so I

thought I'd check it out."

The Man: (grinning) "And I'm Nate. Figured someone needed to bring snacks." (He held up a pouch of roasted nuts.)

Lisa: (taking some nuts) "Oh, we're going to get along great, Nate. Welcome, both of you."

---

Chit Chatting Around the Fire

The conversation shifted as the group shared stories.

Jerome: (tapping on his armor) "You should've seen Brooklyn during training today. He was half asleep but still managed to beat an entire group in sparring. It's unfair, honestly."

Kaida: (raising an eyebrow) "I trained with him last week. That man's laziness is a façade. He's terrifying when he's serious."

Nate: (leaning forward) "I saw Zoya absolutely wreck the obstacle course earlier. How do you keep your focus like that?"

Zoya: (shrugging) "I just picture the stakes as real. If I falter, someone might get hurt."

The group nodded, impressed by her dedication.

Logan: (nudging Vairaj) "What about you, Vairaj? You've been unusually quiet tonight."

Vairaj: (snapping out of his thoughts) "Just... thinking about the mission. It's a lot to take in."

Kaida: (smiling) "Don't worry. That's what we're all here for. To make sure we don't have to face it alone."

---

Lighthearted Moments

Nate, ever the comedian, began mimicking Ganya's stern demeanor during sword training.

Nate: (in a deep voice) "You call that a strike? My grandma swings harder!"

Felix: (laughing) "That's oddly accurate."

Lisa: "Wait, do me next! Smith!"

Nate stood and began stomping around, growling dramatically.

Nate: (gruffly) "No breaks! If you're not crying, you're not trying!"

The group erupted into laughter, even Jerome chuckled despite his usual focus.

---

Heartfelt Talks

As the laughter died down, the mood turned more reflective.

Raven: "It's crazy, isn't it? How we're all here, training to save the world. A year ago, I

couldn't imagine being part of something this big."

Kaida: (nodding) "Same here. I used to work as a scout for my village. Never thought I'd

leave it, let alone join the Saviors."

Nate: (softly) "My parents were killed by monsters when I was a kid. Joining this fight was the only thing that made sense."

Zoya: (looking around) "We've all lost something. But maybe... just maybe, we're gaining something, too."

The group fell silent for a moment, the crackling of the fire filling the void.

---

Aish's Recognition

Suddenly, Aish appeared from the shadows, his psychic presence felt even before he spoke.

Aish: "Good to see you all bonding. You'll need that connection when the time comes."

The group straightened up, a mix of surprise and respect on their faces.

Aish: (looking at Vairaj) "You, especially. Keep your focus. You're going to play a bigger role in this than you realize."

As Aish disappeared into the night, Vairaj stared into the flames, his mind racing with

questions.

---

The Night Ends

The group eventually dispersed, heading back to their quarters.

Kaida: (to Zoya as they walked) "You've got a good team here. I'm glad we joined."

Zoya: (smiling) "Me too. But don't let your guard down. Tomorrow's training won't be any easier."

Nate: (yawning) "Great. Can't wait to get yelled at by Smith again."

The group laughed, their spirits lighter despite the challenges ahead. They were ready to face whatever came next—together.

A Conversation by the River

Vairaj approached Brooklyn, who was sitting silently by the riverbank. The early morning mist surrounded him, making his figure look even more somber. He was tossing small stones into the water, each one creating ripples that expanded into the vastness of the river.

Vairaj: "Brooklyn? You alright?"

Brooklyn: (without looking up) "Yeah. Just sitting here, letting some thoughts flow."

Vairaj: (sitting beside him) "You can talk about it if you want."

Brooklyn: (after a pause) "You know, Vairaj, when I was a kid, just 8 years old, I was

surrounded by eight mad monsters. Somehow, I escaped that day, alive but scarred. People called me lucky. I thought so too."

Brooklyn's voice turned heavier as he continued.

Brooklyn: "When I was a master rank, I once killed 72 intelligent monsters in a single

mission. It was a feat no one had achieved at that level. But the same day, my entire

squad—my friends—were wiped out. The universe saved me but took everyone else.

My mother died giving birth to me. My father, the only family I had left, passed away from an illness when I was just seven."

Brooklyn picked up another stone, gripping it tightly before throwing it into the river with

force.

Brooklyn: "During my rookie days, my captain, who taught me everything I know, was killed right in front of me. I've been called 'The Protector' by civilians, soldiers, and friends alike. But what kind of protector am I if everyone I care for ends up dead? I've witnessed countless soldiers, citizens—good people—slaughtered in front of me."

Brooklyn finally looked at Vairaj, his normally lazy demeanor replaced by one of deep

sadness.

Brooklyn: "People think I'm cool, calm, unshaken. But inside? I'm just waiting for the next name to be added to the list of those I couldn't save."

---

Vairaj's Response

Vairaj was quiet for a moment, absorbing the weight of Brooklyn's words.

Vairaj: (softly) "You've seen so much,

Brooklyn. And yet, you're still here. You're still fighting. That says something about your strength."

Brooklyn gave a hollow laugh.

Brooklyn: "Strength? Maybe. Or maybe I'm just too stubborn to die."

Vairaj: "You've been through hell, but you're still giving hope to others. That's not nothing. I can't say I understand your pain, but I know this—what you've endured makes you one of

the strongest people I've ever met. And if anyone can change their fate, it's you."

Brooklyn looked at Vairaj for a long moment before a faint smile broke through

Brooklyn: "You've got a way with words, kid. Let's hope you're right."

Zoya's Awakening

Meanwhile, back at the camp, Zoya was in her quarters when a sudden, sharp pain shot

through her head. She clutched it, groaning as visions began to flood her mind.

She saw a dense forest, shrouded in mist. In the middle of the forest stood a massive beast with glowing eyes, clutching a fragment of something shining faintly in its claws.

Zoya: (whispering) "The first piece... it's there..."

She stumbled to her feet, her vision blurring as the pain intensified. Suddenly, the room felt like it was spinning, and she collapsed.

---

Aish's Intervention

When Zoya woke up, she was in an isolated room, lying on a padded bed. Aish stood

nearby, his hands glowing faintly as he used his psychic powers to stabilize her.

Aish: "You're awake. Good. That was quite the reaction you had."

Zoya: (weakly) "I... I saw something. A forest, a monster, and... a fragment."

Aish's eyes narrowed.

Aish: "A fragment of what?"

Zoya: (taking a deep breath) "The first piece... the one we need to find Marcus. It's in a forest, protected by a monstrous creature."

Aish placed a hand on her forehead, his psychic energy flowing into her mind to extract more details. Zoya winced but allowed it.

Aish: "Focus on the vision, Zoya. Let me see it clearly."

Zoya concentrated, and the images became sharper. Aish saw the dense forest, the

glowing-eyed beast, and the faintly shining fragment.

Aish: "This is invaluable information. But this creature... it's unlike any we've encountered.

We'll need to prepare extensively before confronting it."

Zoya: (sitting up, despite her fatigue) "I want to go. I can lead us there."

Aish: (firmly) "Not yet. You need to recover first. And we need a solid strategy. Rest now,

Zoya. The fate of this mission depends on you."
