Chapter 31: The Accident.
Stessy pretended to examine the flavor menu, all the while watching Rita's every move. She noticed how Rita's hand rested on her baby bump, and how Carlson lovingly wrapped his arms around her.
With a wicked grin, stessy began to make her move. She casually strolled towards Rita, her eyes fixed on the pregnant woman's midsection.
Just as Stessy was about to make contact, Rita's phone suddenly rang, startling everyone. Rita's eyes widened as she saw the caller I. D - it was her mother.
"Excuse me," Rita quickly answered the call and moved away. Stessy's eyes narrowed as she watched Rita walk away, answering her phone call. She swiftly moved closer, her hands reaching out to push Rita's shoulders. Rita, caught off guard, lost her balance and fell to the ground. Her phone flew out of her hand.
"Rita" Carlson shouted, rushing to her side. "Oh my God Rita!"
Rita lay motionless, her eyes closed. Stessy feigned concern, kneeling beside her. "Oh no, is she okay?" Carlson glared at stessy. "What did you do to her?" Stessy played innocent. "I didn't do anything! She just fell!"
The ice cream patron gasped and murmured, someone call nine one-one.
When the paramedics arrived, they rushed Rita to the hospital. Carlson followed, his heart racing with worry.
At the hospital, Rita was admitted and taken to the maternity ward. The doctors and nurses scrambled to assess her condition.
"Please, how is she?" Carlson begged the doctor.
The doctor's expression was grim. Rita has suffered a concussion and some internal injuries. We are running tests to ensure the baby's safety. "
Carlson's eyes welled up with tears. " Is the baby okay?"
The doctor nodded. So far, yes. But we need to monitor Rita closely. We shall keep her overnight for observation."
Carlson nodded, relief washing over him. Thank you doctor. Thank you."
Carlson's eyes narrowed as he watched stessy walk away, a sense of unease settling in his stomach. He couldn't shake off the feeling that she was involved in Rita's fall.
Determined to get to the bottom of things, Carlson approached the ice cream shop owner. "Did you see what happened?" He asked.
The owner nodded, "yeah, I saw stessy pushing Rita. It looked like an accident, but I don't know, it seemed kinda suspicious."
Carlson's gut told him that stessy was behind Rita's fall. He decided to investigate further and started by questioning the other patrons.
With a new-found sense of urgency, Carlson rushed to the hospital to be with Rita. He couldn't let stessy hurt them again.
As he arrived at the hospital, Carlson saw Rita lying in bed, her eyes closed. He took her hands, relief washing over him.
" Hey, I am here, he whispered. You are safe now."
Rita's eyes fluttered open, and she looked around, confusion etched on her face. " Where-where am I?" She asked in her weak voice.
Carlson's expression was soft and concerned. " You are in the hospital, Rita. You fell and hit your head. Do you remember what happened?"
Rita's brow furrowed as she tried to recall. I was at the ice cream shop with you, then oh no, someone pushed me from behind, sort of.
Carlson's grip on her hand tightened. "Stessy was involved, Rita, she pushed you, and you fell, but don't worry. You are safe now."
Rita's eyes widened in shock. Why should she do that? I don't understand."
Carlson's face darkened. " I think she's been trying to hurt us, Rita. But I will not let her. I promise. "
Rita's gaze drifted to her midsection, and her voice trembled. "Our baby is the baby okay?"
Carlson's expression reassured her. " The baby is fine, Rita. The doctors said so. You are both going to be just fine.
Rita's eyes closed in relief, and Carlson could see the tension in her body ease. He leaned in, his voice gentle. You are safe now, Rita. I am here for you, and I won't let anyone hurt you again."
Rita's hospital room was filled with the beeping of machines and the soft hum of the TV in the corner. She lay in bed, her head wrapped in a bandage, and her eyes fixed on the ceiling.
Carlson sat beside her, holding her hand and talking softly. You are going to be okay, Rita. You just need to rest."
Rita's eyes fluttered into his face, and she smiled weakly. I am so sorry, Carlson. I feel like this is all my fault."
Carlson's expression was gentle. " None of this is your fault, Rita. Stessy's actions are not your responsibility."
The doctor entered the room, a kind smile on his face. Rita, how are you feeling today?"
Rita's voice was still shaky. " A little better, I think. My head still hurts, though."
The doctor nodded, that was to be expected. We shall continue to monitor you and adjust your medication as needed."
As the doctor checked Rita's vitals, Carlson asked when she could go home?"
" Well, we need to keep her overnight for observation, but if everything looks good tomorrow, she can be discharged.
Rita's eyes lit up slightly. "Tomorrow? I can go home tomorrow?"
The doctor smiled. "Barring any complications, yes you need to take it easy for a while, but you will be able to go home tomorrow."
Rita's fac relaxed, and she closed her eyes, a small smile on her lips. Thank you doctor. "
As the doctor left, Carlson leaned, his voice soft. I will be here for you, Rita. Every step of the way."
Rita's eyes opened, and she looked at Carlson, her gaze filled with gratitude. " I know Carlson. I am so grateful to you."
The next day, Rita was discharged from the hospital, and Carlson took her home. She was still a bit shaky and her head was throbbing, but she was determined to rest and recover.
As they settled into the couch, Carlson brought her a blanket and a cup of tea. "How are you feeling?" He asked, concern etched on his face.
Rita took a sip of her tea and closed her eyes. "A little better, I think. Just tired and sore."
Carlson nodded and sat down beside her." You need to rest. I will take care of everything else."
