Chapter 26 - Dinner plans
Nyx didn't know what to expect from Kyrain's mother. She knew that the lady was extremely famous as a top rate healer in the country and was one of the biggest contributing factors to the stability of the region in the early days.
She could tell that Brittanie Ekart was more than that. The aether that came off her was massive. For over a decade of training, she was definitely one of the most powerful people she had met so far and it made her rather nervous especially when from the corner of her eye, she could see the woman scrutinizing her every move as if she were a serpent about to attack her son.
"Where is home Nyx?" Brittanie asked politely.
"Just across the border from the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. There is a tiny town called Heyden." She replied.
"No kidding?! I was born in Traverse City." Brittanie replied. "I haven't been back there since Sorin was sent away years ago, but maybe one day we will head back for some vacation time when he returns."
Nyx had seen photos of a man with brown hair, blue eyes in a military uniform around the house that looked just like Kyrain. She had assumed he was Kyrain's father, but didn't know a gentle way to ask.
"Sorin is your husband?" Nyx asked gesturing to the ring on her left hand.
"He is. Kyrain never mentioned him?" She replied.
"Just met yesterday mom when we tried to beat the snot out of eachother." Kyrain said sarcastically, but honestly which Nyx nodded to.
"Ah. Yeah, he was caught in the initial blasts and I had thought him dead, but found out later that he was just sent to another location that every time I try to sense it or track it feels like it's not even of this world anymore." Brittanie said.
"Was he the only one to be sent away?" Nyx asked.
"No actually. I found a bunch of pictures of different people caught in the blast and they all seem to be in the same area, but different locations within that area. Some died quickly in some sort of battle or training or whatever is happening. Every time I've seen Sorin, he is always brusied, cut, beated, or fighting. A few years ago he looked like he was in a red, dusty mining area. Now he has been traveling through different cities, meeting different people I haven't seen since he was first taken from us, including one black haired bimbo with red eyes." Brittanie explained.
"Black hair, red eyes. Ever seen weapons she uses or a path?" Nyx asked curiously.
"Yes actually...Khopeshes. I had to look them up when I first saw them. She also likes to be set on fire for some reason. I assume it makes her stronger." Brittanie said.
Kyrain was quiet up until this point.
"Why haven't you ever told me all of this before?" He asked.
"You never seemed to care. I've told your uncles because they always like their updates on him. I've also told many family friends as its not like its secret information." Brittanie said before she took another bite of the Cream cheese and spinach stuffed salmon she made for dinner that night.
Though his mother wasn't paying attention, Kyrain didn't miss Nyx freeze, look up then down quickly schooling her features back.
Before Kyrain could ask his mom spoke up again.
"So what do you have planned with my son?" She said causing Kyrain to almost spit.
Nyx who didn't think anything about it answered quickly. "Unfortunately, I don't get to make plans. They are essentially made for us within this first year save for level 1 bounties." She said taking another bite of her fish.
"Forgive me if this is too personal a question, but why does it seem that every single person in Kyrain's family seem to be both insanely strong and in a position of power?" She asked.
Kyrain giggled. "That is always the running joke in the family and amongst our friends. My aunts and uncles will joke about my generation having kids in case more wardens are needed or guild masters." He said.
"Strange. Then there is a distinct possibility that Sorin is just as powerful as the Clarksville Guild Master and the Warden or the Pacific Northwest." Nyx said thinking more out loud than to anyone.
"Odds are, and it's as both of his brothers and lately his sisters are suspecting, Sorin is even stronger. He has always been a blend of the three brothers with a mind that always thinks outside the box. Kody, his youngest brother, suspects Sorin will do everything in his power to "break the system." Brittanie said.
Nyx let the topic go with a few nods to herself and a glance over to Kyrain. She had no idea what was up with this family, but it's definitely on her watch list.
Dinner was uneventful for the rest of the night and the following morning Kyrain and Nyx met at the guild hall, masks on to look for their first job.
They checked the bounty hunter screen and saw a few jobs. A couple were grayed out meaning they were already being actively hunted, but there was one that was open. It was for a small gang and had four warrants associated with it.
He opened the details and scooted over for Nyx.
This small gang has been officially charged with with the following: Beaking and Entering, Trespassing, Burglary, Larceny, assault and battery, brandishing a weapon.
Group is not above tier 2, but they can prove difficult for their area to deal with. They are extremely hard to lock down, due to their impulsive behavior.
Kyrain looked at Nix. "Eon, I have an idea of how we can get these guys." He said.
"Let's take the bounty. They are low tiered and present minimal risk to us especially with our path and how little threat they pose overall, then lets head somewhere in private and hear your idea." She said in response.
Kyrain scanned his ID, then screen prompted for the second ID to be scanned in order for the job to be accepted due to their probationary status. Once Nyx scanned her ID, the screen beeped and showed a green acceptance border and directions to the bounty counter that was on the other side of the guild hall outer ring.
Once they reached the counter the attendant had a steel tube prepared for them. After he verified their IDs, he passed the warrants to them and then they went into a conference room and locked it.
"In my experience, you attract more bees with honey, than with vinegar."
He went to the smart screen in the conference room, connected his phone then projected a map of Clarksville.
"This group likes to hang out over here on Rafiki drive. Let's talk to the area manager and see if we can rent out a place and get Rent A Center for temporary furniture delivery. The program will pay for the sting operation. The thing is, we need to pretend to be severely injured." Kyrain began to explained then Nyx took over.
"These are like those fish that were from the Amazon." she said snapping her fingers trying to remember. Then pointed
"Piranhas! They are cowards. However they are hunters of opportunity. So if they see us weak and moving in. We will have to keep the act up for a bit, but I think we can pull it off. Any time we have to leave we mask up, and portal out otherwise we will be an injured meducally retired crippled couple ripe for the picking." She said.
They both nodded and smiled. They had their plan.
