Chapter 16 - Surge
Kyrain opened a rift back to the front of the guild for both him and his mother, but when they stepped through they found complete chaos waiting for them.
There were personnel moving all over with teams on standby waiting for news of some sort with a warnings being shown on the primary big screen for announcements within the guild.
They checked their phones now that they were back in the area. They had surge notifications.
Brittanie and Kyrain looked at eachother, Kyrain ripped a rift open to the hospital for his mother who ran through. He moved to the counter and began to get the information for the beast surge.
He ran up to the screens and scanned his junior ID.
Beast Surge protocol in effect. All normal systems are suspended until conclusion of the surge.

[Desired Skills]
Kyrain selected desired skills and saw a whole list of skills that were primarily combat oriented.
He got down to the bottom
Any and all skills that assist with travel are needed! If you possess a skill that aids in travel, report to front desk.
Pay: 1 C rank core per person transported.
"How convenient... " Kyrain said with a flat look. He gets a fancy new skill and immediately it is needed.
He closed the screen and went to the front desk. He wouldn't have access to C rank core jobs for another 2 years and there was no way he could pass this up.
During his time as an initiate before becoming a junior adventurer he had been on tours to every zone and had even seen the massive rifts in what used to be the Ft. Campbell training areas.
So he was familiar with where people would need to go. He went and jumped in a line for the front counter.
He didnt have to wait long before he reached the front.
"Hello! What can I do for you Kyrain?" Said the lady who Kyrain embarrassingly didn't know the name of, but she clearly knew him.
"Im here for the travel skill job?"
The lady looked at Kyrain with a strange look. "You are still a junior adventurer, you understand and accept all risks with the job you're about to take?" She asked.
"Yes ma'am." He answered with a nervous smile.
She made an adjustment to his profile then gave him a pin for one of the travel members. The pin would track the amount of people he took to the surge lines through a simple scan.
He went to the lobby where others waited to ferry people. He didn't have to wait long as people began to come over looking to head out.
They would come up, let him know which zone they wanted to be and how close to the rift. After they scanned the pin he opened the rift and after a hesitation from each they stepped through and he closed the rift.
As soon as people saw his skill they immediately started coming over in groups and going through.
Kyrain couldn't believe it. Some still went with the other people with the usual travel skills of flight and being ferried, but the amount of people Kyrain sent to their perspective zone and areas they wanted to fight in was shocking.
The ease in which people were moved to the lines began affecting the amount of beasts rapidly trying to break the inner perimeter and push into the next ring and could trigger an evacuation of all weaker tier users.
"We need to dispatch some of you movers! We have injured that need to get evacuated!" Came the call and everyone looked at Kyrain who had stolen the show.
He put his hand in the air. "I can go."
The attendant who brought the news of mass casualties looked at his status as a junior adventurer and pursed his lips.
"You will be heading to the innermost section of zone 1 escorted by one of our top teams. You understand that this exceeds the level of danger usually permitted by the guild?"
Kyrain nodded feeling nerves begin to rise as he wasn't sure exactly what he was getting himself into, but he could help.
"Yes. I already spoke to the administrator at the counter."
The attended nodded solemnly as a team of unknown adventurers stepped forward as Kyrain tore a rift where he had once been on tour in zone 1 that close to the rift.
He stepped through with the team into straight chaos. Massive beast hoards and flashing abilities everywhere. There was waht seemed to be a dust storm overcast as reds, blue, green, and yellow lights predominantly would flash through.
Roars of beasts would sound and the ground would shake from steps and impacts.
"Stay in the center of us! Move with us and stay on your toes! Defend yourself however you can, but do not hinder us. Laurence! You're up front!" The apparent leader said as a surprisingly slender man with a shield and spear stepped forward.
Another order came.
"Chester! You have the kid! Keep him safe. A tier 3 or 4 should definitely not be here, but we need to get him to the casualties! Follow me, the beacon is taking us this way!"
The tank and the leader moved together. The tank had an ice path of sorts that would redirect some of the strongest strikes from beasts Kyrain had ever seen. These beasts were at least B rank and above. The tank would freeze things over and let the slippery nature of ice deflect the blow rather than take it head on.
"Almost there! I just sent the pager signal for a star cluster!" The leader of the team said.
Kyrain looked up as a brilliant red cluster of flares shot into the sky marking their target. A woman, and two other men, clearly all DPS were fighting off panicked creatures next to him as the tank continued shrugging brutal huts. Explosions and minor earthquakes continued all around.
They finally reached the location where they had casualties. A few bodies were covered in thin blankets and sheets, clearly dead, but there were MANY others writhing in agony.
"We are another group here to get casualties out!" The team leader said.
A man marked with the healers symbol looked up and nodded. He was sweating perfusely from effort.
"Excellent! How many can you take?!" He asked looked at the group members for the traveler.
Kyrain yelled stepping forward fighting passed the shock of horrifying this field of battle was.
"With the defense and cover this location gives, I can get all of them with help!" He shouted over the chaos.
The healer looked perplexed so Kyrain opened the rift. On the other side was the helipad to the hospital with many healers on standby. They all looked over as the sounds of battle exploded from the opening of their side of the rift.
The healer was a true professional. After a quick assessment he began giving orders and users began moving through the portal.
In combat like what Kyrain was currently experiencing, each second seemed to drag by at an excruciating pace. After the first few casualties went through many higher ranked members began pouring through the rift to guard and reinforce the medical area they had closed off from combat and dig in defensively.
"Incoming!!!" A scream came from nowhere as a burning jet of blue fire swept toward them. Kyrain could see injured going through the portal and so he couldn't close it. He stepped in front and pushed his nullification to the max.
The tank from the team he came with, slammed his spear into the ground causing a massive wall of ice to form beyond Kyrain's Null range and it shuddered on impact and parts shattered coming through slamming into Kyrain's defense causing it to bottom out quickly and begin to burn him.
Had he taken that hit directly, there would have been nothing left of him. "Last casualty for now! Extraction team lets go!" The healer shouted as he went through followed by the healer from the team, and the damage dealers.
A slap hit Kyrain's shoulder.
"You're up kid! Move!" The team leader ordered. Kyrain's years of training in the guild took over and he went through. His quick reaction to orders allowed the leader and tank to follow right behind.
Kyrain closed the rift and immediately cheers and clapping went up and was quickly silenced as a familiar voice cut in.
"We can celebrate heroism later! Get these casualties to the ER now! I'll treat those on the edge of life and death right here. Get me aether cores! I need C rank as I'm burning through my aether! Kyrain! Get to the guild and continue helping, but please, please be careful baby boy!"
His mother said as she looked at him meaningfully and then snapped back to healing mode, saving as many as she could.
Kyrain ripped open a rift and was about to enter when a strange system message was put in front of his and everyone's eyes.
