Chapter 18: 18. Jonnel 'One-Eye'
With the death of Lord Cregan, his second son Jonnel Stark inherited the North and Winterfell. Jonnel was a battle-proven warrior and respected amongst his bannermen. Jonnel would first have statues of his father, and all of his wives carved out of marble and put inside Wintercity, to be displayed before all the people of Winterfell. Jonnel would then continue all of the policies that his father had implemented as they had already proven to be good for the North. Lord Jonnel and Lady Robyn would have three sons in their marriage, The eldest Willam, the middle son Artos, and the youngest Beron.
Shortly after Jonnel Stark became Lord, he'd be notified of his engineers managing to make a miniaturized version of the multishot ballista in the form of a multishot crossbow. This crossbow would initially prove to be efficient in small, trained groups, due to them having a lower range than a regular crossbow, and being more expensive and more time-consuming to train, however in a battle the large volume of value of bolts they could rain down on an enemy would be invaluable and could completely turn the tide of a battle.
Everything would continue in peace for 12 years when he would receive a raven from the South declaring that King Daeron II was a bastard and that the rightful king was Daemon Blackfyre after Daeron had sent men to wrongfully arrest him in the Red Keep. Close to half of the realm had declared for Daemon Blackfyre, however none of these would be any of the Great Houses, however they would be some the most powerful bannermen of those Great Houses. Jonnel held no love for King Daeron as he made up with the Three Daughters after they murdered his friend King Daeron I, and he still held strong dislike for them because they had killed his older brother Rickon. Jonnel decided that he would fortify the fully rebuilt and improved Moat Cailin and defend the southern coasts of the North and was thinking about what to do so that North don't have to get involved in another Targaryen civil war, because that's what he saw it as. He would get his wish, but not in the way he wanted, as he'd get word that a wildling army of 40,000 men under King Raymun Redbeard had snuck past the wall and began raiding all throughout the northern parts of the North.
Jonnel would immediately call all the men he could from the southern parts of the North, as his northern lords were already forced to defend themselves. Jonnel would manage to gather close to 30,000 men including all of the Winter Guard. Jonnel would leave Wintercity with all those men, along with giving orders to still recruit as many men as they could. Jonnel would join up with Umber forces at Longtown near the Longlake, and then proceed north to the Last Hearth, in order to defeat the wildling army there.
Once he and his army reached the Last Hearth, they would quickly defeat the wildling army there. However, he would learn that it was only 10,000 men there and that Raymun was a former disgraced member of the Winter Guard who was sent to the Night's Watch. Jonnel vowed then that Raymun would be killed for his treason of desertion. Jonnel would then receive word that Raymun was marching on them, with 30,000 men thinking that he had the element of surprise on them. Jonnel would immediately march out to meet them in battle and hopefully surprise them to minimize his losses in the battle. However, once he got there, he would realize that he didn't manage to get the element of surprise, however, he would realize that Raymun's army only had 1,000 cavalrymen. This would prove to be the main factor that would decide the battle, although Raymun's army did have 100 mammoths he felt like he could easily deal with them. In the battle that would ensue Jonnel would lead the cavalry with his second son Artos, while his eldest son Willam would lead the defense of the infantry.
Jonnel would allow Raymun to charge his mammoths as the first move in the battle, but Jonnel would have all of his archers fire flaming arrows at them and their crews, many of them would burn, however many more would panic and flee towards Raymun's own army and trample over thousands of his men. After that Jonnel would order an immediate charge on all of his men. In the fighting that ensued Jonnel and Raymun would meet each other in single combat, however, Jonnel was past his prime and Raymun managed to get the upper hand on him and tear off his helm and chopped his head, Artos Stark would roar "FATHER!!!!!" and charge Raymun in a blood rage while he wielded Wintersbane, the duel that followed would be quick but fierce, in 15 seconds Artos would carve him in half, causing the rest of the Wildling host to break and run, however, the Northmen would not allow them to retreat, as Jonnel had already sent a contingent of cavalry ahead to cut off the Wildling retreat, the Wildling host would all be trapped and completely slaughtered, not a single wildling would make it off the field alive. After the Battle of the Last Forest, the forces of the Night's Watch would finally make it to the field however Lord Willam, now Lord Paramount of North, would force them to bury the dead, for their failure at securing the wall and allowing the wildlings through.
But Willam Stark would die a few years later without any child and his brother Artos will become the Lord of Winterfell. Artos began looking for a bride, as he had to begin having heirs soon. Artos would choose to marry Lady Alicent Flint of Widow's Watch. They would have their wedding in a grand wedding ceremony that would be held in Winter City. Lord Artos and Lady Alicent would have five children, the first two would be twins Edwyle and Dorren, along with two daughters later on Berena and Alysanne, and their youngest a boy named Roderick later on in their marriage. The next years would be full of reconstruction of the kingdom for all of Westeros as the Blackfyre Rebellion had damaged every kingdom in Westeros.
However ten years later, a new threat would emerge from the Western Coast, the Lord Reaper of Pyke, and Lord Paramount of the Iron Isles, Lord Dagon Greyjoy had built a massive fleet of 600 ships many being captured trade ships, and cogs from his reaving across the seas, and had surprise attacked multiple cities along the Western Coast not just in the North but also Lannisport in the Westerlands, along with Arbor and Oldtown in the Dorne and Reach in a coordinated attack, and was now raiding all along the Western shore of Westeros.
Dalton Greyjoy had rebelled against the Iron Throne viewing it as weak. Lord Artos would first have 150 ships of the Eastern Fleet transferred over to the remaining 40 ships of the Western Fleet, along with calling the banners of Winterfell and fortifying every castle, city/town, and river landing on the Western Coast of the North. Then Lord Artos would send ravens to Lords Lannister, Redwyne, Hightower, and the Hand of the King Brynden Bloodraven in King's Landing for support. While Lords Lannister, Redwyne, and Hightower would immediately agree and begin correspondence to establish a strategy to oppose them, the Hand of the King Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers decided that it was more important to look across the Narrow Sea for remaining Blackfyre pretenders instead of doing his duty and protecting the realm, this would turn those lords against him. Lord Artos would take 250 of the 300 strong warships of the Eastern Fleet across Westeros to Lannisport through the Moat Cailin Canal, leaving orders for the arsenals and shipyards on the Eastern Coast to immediately begin constructing warships. However, before the journey there, Artos would first travel to Braavos, where he managed to acquire 100 warships of the Braavosi Fleet due to his close relationship with them, and the fact that the Braavosi viewed the Ironborn taking thrall as nothing more than another form of slavery. Artos would then arrive at Lannisport within a month.
At Lannisport the now allied Stark-Lannister-Hightower-Redwyne Fleet would number 500 warships total, with 350 Stark, 50 Lannister, 50 Hightower, and 100 Redwyne warships, as the Lannisters, Hightowers, and Redwyne's had lost half of their naval strength in the initial Ironborn surprise attacks. Artos would take command of the allied fleet and begin to sail to face the Ironborn Fleet, as even though they were still outnumbered by 100 ships, the allied fleet was made almost entirely out of strong warships, while the Ironborn fleet was mostly weaker longships and captured merchant ships. Artos and his younger brother Beron would mainly devise the battle plan as they had more experience at sea than the others did. They would then find out that the Ironborn were just off the western coast of Fair Isle, they would then immediately move to intercept and destroy them.
The battle would come to be known as the Battle off the Coast of Fair Isle. It would be the new largest naval battle in Westeros, with a combined total of 1,100 warships fighting in the battle. The battle itself would be costly, in the initial fighting, the Ironborn ships would use their numbers to their advantage, however as the fighting went on the clear strength, cohesion, and strategy of Artos and Beron would bear fruit, and then most of the losses would be only from the Ironborn ships. In the Battle on his flagship "The Howl," Artos would come across Dagon Greyjoy's flag "The Kraken" and would board his ship. In the fighting that ensued, Artos would charge up and cut through Dagon Greyjoy's few guards, before engaging him in single combat. In their duel, with Artos wielding Wintersbane as Ice was less fit for ship-to-ship combat and Dagon wielding the Valyrian Steel Sword Nightfall, the two would fight all over the quarterdeck, the massive clashing of Valyrian steel on Valyrian steel could be heard loudly all throughout the battle. Dagon's strong and ferocious blows were matched with Artos' skill precision, finesse, and his own strength, as they clashed, slashed, dodged, blocked, and parried each other's sword attacks until finally, Artos stabbed Dagon with Wintersbane in the torso through his armor, before then decapitating him. Artos would then take Nightfall off of Dagon's corpse, before continuing the rest of the battle dual wielding both Wintersbane and Nightfall simultaneously.
Following Dagon's death in the battle, the Ironborn fleet fell apart into disarray and was completely destroyed, however, the Allied victory came at great cost, as close to 200 of the Allied fleet's ships were sunk, and another 100 were barely seaworthy at all, and in desperate need of repair. However the damage to the Ironborn was done, all of their strength at sea was completely destroyed and would be for at least an entire generation, and now the Lord of Pyke, and Lord Paramountcy of the Iron Isles went to a young boy Quellon Greyjoy whose uncle now ruled as his regent. The allied lords then decided that it was enough, and all went back to their homes, after a celebratory feast and tourney at Lannisport.
Another very important thing to note here is that Bloodraven's refusal to aid the lords that were under attack by the Ironborn would result in all of those lords never sending any support to the crown in any of the following Blackfyre Rebellions. Bloodraven's attempt to keep an eye on potential rebels and on the Blackfyre threat, combined with his ruthlessness, seemed to only stew hatred against him and the crown among many lords in the realm.
After two decades, Artos would then vote in the Great Council of 233 AC, he would vote for Prince Aegon, who would win the Great Council and become King Aegon V of his name. Artos would also be the first to demand that Bloodraven be sent away to the Night's Watch, Aegon V would then send him away to the Night's Watch in disgrace, however, he was going to allow Bloodraven to keep the Valyrian Sword Dark Sister, but Artos had stated "This dishonorable kin slaying murderer should never be allowed to leave the city with this great Valyrian sword on his person, for he was now unworthy of it." King Aegon V would then look around and see almost every lord agreeing with Artos, then he would strip Bloodraven of the sword Dark Sister and take it back into the possession of House Targaryen. In the year 243 AC Lord Artos and Lady Alicent would have their final son, Roderick, however, Lady Alicent was almost 60, and she could not survive the birth, however, Roderick would be a healthy boy. Artos would then remain a widow as the two had fallen in love with each other. Artos would then take Roderick under his wing.
In the year 258 AC Lord Artos Stark would die of old age, being surrounded by all of his family. His sons Edwyle along with his own son Rickard, Dorren and his daughter Lyarra, and Roderick, along with his daughters Berena and Alysanne along with their children. Lords Artos would be remembered as one of the most dangerous Lords of Winterfell and Wardens of the North along with being one of the greatest Starks periods. He'd be the second longest-reigning Stark lord since House Stark lost its crown. Artos Stark would be known as "The Implacable" as he was relentless, and on the battlefield he was unstoppable. Artos was the most dangerous fighter and warrior of his age. Immediately after his death, his eldest son and newest Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North would commission a statue built for Artos in Wintercity just like how Cregan Stark's statue was placed in Wintercity.
