Riftborn: The Fall of Light

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Weight of Power

Valen stood before the ancient tree, the mysterious stone pulsing softly in his hand. The weight of it was both physical and mental. It felt alive, as if it were breathing with him. The light that radiated from it cast an ethereal glow on his face, and for a moment, the world around him seemed to fade away. There was only him and the stone.

His mind raced with questions. What was this power? Why had he been chosen to wield it? The voice had said it was his to command, but was it truly his? Was he prepared for the responsibility that came with it?

The forest around him was eerily silent. The usual rustle of leaves, the chirping of distant creatures—everything had been swallowed by the weight of the moment. Only the soft hum of the stone filled the void.

Without warning, a gust of wind rushed through the clearing, the leaves swirling violently around him. Valen's heart skipped a beat as the voice returned, its tone more insistent this time.

"Valen..."

He closed his eyes, trying to steady his breath. "What must I do?" he asked, his voice a mere whisper, swallowed by the wind.

"You must choose your path carefully," the voice replied. It sounded almost like a warning now, as if the weight of its words would bring consequences. "The heart of the forest is more than just power. It is a choice between what was and what could be. The balance between light and dark, creation and destruction. The line is thin. Tread carefully."

The words hung heavy in the air. Valen opened his eyes, his grip tightening around the stone. The pressure of the decision was suffocating. The weight of the choice felt unbearable, yet there was no turning back now. The stone was part of him now, and the journey ahead was irrevocably tied to it.

Suddenly, the ground trembled beneath his feet, and the great tree before him began to shift. Its roots groaned and creaked, slowly unearthing from the earth. The tree's massive trunk cracked open, revealing a dark, gaping wound at its core. From within, a deep voice resonated, filling the entire clearing.

"Valen..." it called, a tone of authority and sadness blending together. "Do you understand what you've awoken?"

Valen's blood ran cold. The tree was speaking to him. Or was it something deeper, something older than even the forest itself?

He stepped back, staring into the deep blackness inside the tree. The air grew heavy, and the light from the stone flickered erratically, as if it were struggling against the growing darkness. His instincts screamed at him to flee, but his feet were rooted to the ground.

"What am I supposed to do with this power?" Valen demanded, his voice louder now, filled with frustration. He wasn't sure if he was speaking to the tree or to himself anymore.

"You must restore the balance," the deep voice replied, sorrow heavy in its words. "What you hold is a fragment of what was lost. The heart of the forest was broken long ago, and with it, the world. You can either mend what was torn, or you can burn it all to the ground."

The words echoed in his mind like a terrible prophecy, one that he was destined to fulfill—whether he was ready or not.

"What happens if I fail?" Valen asked, though he knew the answer already.

"The world will wither," the voice whispered, "and with it, everything you have ever known."

Valen felt a wave of dread wash over him. The pressure of his past mistakes, the weight of the lives he had failed, pressed down on him like a crushing boulder. How could he fix something this broken? How could someone like him—the very person who had failed at everything—be the one to restore balance?

He lowered his gaze to the stone in his hand. Its glow had dimmed, the warmth now replaced by an unsettling cold. It was waiting for something. But what?

"Is this my choice?" he whispered, looking to the tree for some answer, some sign.

A long silence followed. Then, with a deep, mournful sigh, the voice spoke again.

"Your choice, Valen, is not only your own. It is the world's. What you decide will echo through time. There will be no turning back."

Valen stood there, his heart pounding in his chest. The weight of the decision crushed him. He could feel the pull of both the stone and the forest—one tugging him toward destruction, the other toward a fragile hope. The future of everything rested on him, and for the first time since his journey began, Valen realized just how small and insignificant he truly was in the grand scheme of things.

And yet, the stone pulsed again, as if urging him forward. A choice had to be made.

He turned his gaze toward the darkened sky, the stars barely visible through the thick canopy above. Somewhere out there, beyond the forest, beyond his understanding, was the answer he sought. But whether he was ready to face it—whether he even deserved to—was something only time could reveal.

With a final, shaky breath, Valen raised the stone, letting its light fill the clearing. Whatever happened next, he knew one thing: the world was waiting for him to choose.
