Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse

Chapter 264: Planning for the Future

"Now that we know about the pattern of zombies and the rate at which they are evolving, we should hurry in finding a solution that won't need us running from our planet again." Leng Pan was sitting in bed with Lu Zhen leaning against the head board with a book in hand.

"You have a point. But for now, we should establish a way of life that will ensure the safety of our people and also increase their combat abilities." Lu Zhen had a solemn expression as he said that.

When he saw the information in the notebook Ouyang Jin had compiled , he was surprised because the zombies this time seem to be mutating faster than in the past life.

In the past, it took at least two years for the zombies to start evolving. At that time, if they had the experience they have now, things wouldn't have gotten so bad that they had to sacrifice themselves just to let the last of humanity flee.

However, now that they have experience, they still had the upper hand even though traitors were still among them.

They wondered whether the two soldiers they met the other day, Silk and Blaze would join them. They hadn't contacted them yet and Leng Pan was starting to wonder if they had bet on the wrong people.

"Stop worrying about it. We will hear from them at the latest, tomorrow. You don't have to worry so much. From my observation, those two care more about saving humanity than being good soldiers.

So, even though a soldier disobeying their superior is seen as a mistake worthy of punishment, they wouldn't care." Lu Zhen could tell what his wife was worried about and comforted her.

Leng Pan wasn't very surprised by this. As time went by, she had started to realize that Lu Zhen seemed to know her very well. Therefore, she didn't think much about the fact that he knew what she was worried about.

"I know. By the way, why did you expose the information about the zombies and whatever Ouyang brought back to Xu Man and Juan Ke?" Leng Pan had been meaning to ask her husband about this because she didn't understand.

"Because they will face this situation sooner or later if they choose to follow us. That's why I wanted to expose them to the tip of the iceberg of what they will be facing if they choose to join us.

If they just joined thinking that they will be facing slow, normal zombies, what will happen in the future if they come face-to-face with an evolved zombie?

So, it's still better to let them know somethings. If they still show up tomorrow and say that they wanted to continue being a part of the team, then that's good

If they change their minds, then it's better than making plans with them only to chicken out at the last moment." Lu Zhen didn't like to fight an unprepared battle.

If he knew that he was to fight a losing battle, then it's better that he avoids it completely.

That was why he wanted to make sure that the people who join his team will do so single-mindedly and not with thoughts of backing out once things get tough.

"What you said is right. So, apart from the people we have, should we recruit more people?" Leng Pan was actually confused about this.

She was worried about history repeating itself so she didn't know whether it was a good idea to add more people.

"We can't fear every rope lying around thinking it's a snake just because we were once bitten by a snake.

Even though some of our own betrayed us and caused our defeat, we can't generalize them.

You know as well as I do that we will be facing a very tough battle between zombies and humans. We don't know whether those aliens will appear here again. If they do, the enemy camp will only expand.

We don't have enough people to face such a calamity, so we are going to have to recruit more.

We will just be careful about the character of those we bring aboard and they will also be monitored.

I don't know if Little Tao can make something that could help, but he probably can. So, don't worry so much, Baby." Lu Zhen was more confident in today's humans compared to those in the past.

He felt that the level of technology in the past might have contributed to their downfall. Now that humans have more interaction among themselves, he felt that they might overcome this crisis through human connection.

"Alright then, let's wait for tomorrow to see if those who wanted to join us will still be so enthusiastic.

Also, I hope you were right about those soldiers.

Good night, hubby." Leng Pan said goodnight to her husband and before Lu Zhen could even reply, she had drifted off to sleep.

"Good night, my love." Lu Zhen said with a doting smile as he looked at his soundly sleeping wife and lowered his head to kiss her forehead.

He was glad that in this apocalypse, they weren't just two soldiers working together. His dream of being with her had been finally fulfilled.

He remembered how in their past lives they had met when the apocalypse had already started.

They had met in the battlefield where Leng Pan was leading a small team of ten people to carve a bloody path in an encirclement of zombies and aliens.

They had been fighting for a long time but we're still unable to break through.

One of her teammates got injured and as if something inside her had awakened, she cut down those zombies and aliens that when she was done, there wasn't one that was intact.

They had all been cut to pieces. She was covered in black blood and looked like an asura from hell.

However, once she had finished killing all the enemies, she had collapsed beside her teammate who was on the verge of death and literally begged him not to die.

However, the guy was losing vitality very fast. Seeing that he was still dying, she had changed from begging him not to die to threatening him.

She told him that if he died she would resurrect him then beat him to death again. But that guy still died.

She had broken down and cried so much. At that time, he had thought that she had a special relationship with the guy, only to later find out that she was like that because they were teammates. There was nothing more between them.

He had fallen in love with her at that time. He wondered what she would do if she was so good to her teammates, how would she treat her loved one?

Thinking of the distant past, Lu Zhen lifted his hand and brushed the hair on her forehead.

He had chased after her for years after he had fallen for her. He had fought beside her and given her all her support. He had watched her rise from a small team leader to the commander in charge of the largest fighting force in the apocalypse.

What he never managed to get was her agreement to be together. At first she was completely clueless about relationships and didn't understand when he showed gestures to suggest to her about dating.

He had painstakingly worked hard until she fell in love with him, however, that wasn't enough to make her be with him.

She had even made the decision to sacrifice herself for the sake of humanity without consulting him. He had been angry with her for a long time after that.

However, he had been more angry at himself for letting her take the lead. At the time, he supported her wholeheartedly and even though he could have been the commander in charge, he had chosen to stand behind her instead to support her.

However, that was the biggest mistake of his life. If she hadn't felt so obligated to save everyone, maybe she wouldn't have made the choices she made.

So, in this life, he had decided that he will not stand behind her but beside her instead.

If they stand at the same level, they can discuss the decisions that concern the steps they must take to fight the apocalypse.

He will never allow her to sacrifice herself again, the fate of humanity be damned.

However, he also knew that she wouldn't be happy if the world perished, so he has to build a strong enough team for her so that she will be able to save the world successfully this time.

As he thought about the past and planned about what to do in the future, Lu Zhen put the book in his hand on the bedside table and switched off the lights.

He lay down and and pulled his wife into his arms placing her head on his chest where she could listen to his powerful heartbeat.

In her dreams, Leng Pan was also dreaming about their past and how she had broken Lu Zhen's heart by abandoning him when she knew how he felt about her.
