Chapter 60: A Conspiracy
"I wouldn't have guessed that in Gulai Country, there would still be such remarkable and unique individuals!"
Xu Mengzhen, reflecting on her encounters today, considered Duan Gujin to be one of those remarkable and unique individuals.
While Green Cloud Sect could also produce Spirit Pills that extended life for a few years, such pills were actually unsellable within the sect, and their sale was forbidden.
The reason was that the sect feared someone might use the detrimental side effects of those Elixir Pills to frame others, hence such Spirit Medicine was strictly forbidden to be disclosed outside, except for some of the elders who could possess them.
If those with malicious intentions used such Elixir Pills to force others to consume them, and prohibit these coerced individuals from circulating their Primordial Power,
then after a month, those who took the Elixir Pills would end up completely crippled.
Green Cloud Sect absolutely forbade such scenarios, so only a very few elders within the sect were privy to such Elixir Recipes.
However, if ordinary mortals consumed such refined Spirit Pills, it wouldn't matter much.
To ordinary mortals, they did not care about cultivation; they only cared about extending their lives for a few years, which was sufficient for them.
From these clues, Xu Mengzhen concluded that Duan Gujin's master must certainly be a figure of at least elder status.
"Maybe that young man will enter Green Cloud Sect in the future. I am really looking forward to seeing what exceptional performances he will show after he joins Green Cloud Sect," Xu Mengzhen thought to herself.
A day later, a shocking piece of news spread; Star Moon Academy was to undertake a special mission.
This special mission required the elimination of a bandit stronghold outside the Capital City of Gulai Country, supposedly in accordance with the military's wishes.
"Can it be? How can it be like this? We are all students!"
Once this news spread, it immediately caused quite a stir among the students of Star Moon Academy, many of whom voiced their dissatisfaction, believing that combating bandits should be the responsibility of soldiers, not students.
However, soon Star Moon Academy posted a notice specifying that this was the military's intention, and that the academy would choose some outstanding students to purge the bandits through random selection.
Those who performed exceptionally in combating bandits could have their tuition fees waived for three years.
Upon confirming the news was real, the opposing students at Star Moon Academy had no choice but to pray that they would not be the ones randomly chosen.
In the afternoon, the results of the selection were officially announced, revealing that fifty exemplary disciples from Star Moon Academy had been randomly chosen.
On that notice were written the three large characters: Duan Gujin.
Soon, this news reached Duan Gujin's ears. He rushed to view the notice, only then realizing he had indeed been successfully selected.
"How strange, why has it turned out this way?"
A hint of confusion flashed through Duan Gujin's mind.
In the memories of his past life, there was absolutely nothing about him being drawn into a bandit-combat squad; he knew that entering the Genius Class must have altered many events from his memory.
"Why such a coincidence that I was chosen? Could there be some trickery behind this?"
Duan Gujin looked at the names on the notice and didn't find Duan Tianlang's or Cao Wentian's names.
If there were trickeries in this mission, it was very likely that it was either Duan Tianlang from the Duan Family or Cao Wentian plotting against him, thinking of killing someone by borrowing another's hand!
"An attack comes, I block; water comes, I cover with soil!"
Duan Gujin took a deep breath, realizing that since those behind the scenes used such methods to frame him, he cannot just do nothing and passively respond.
"If I find out who's framing me, I will definitely make them pay!"
Duan Gujin thought to himself, though he currently had no evidence to determine who directed Star Moon Academy's senior management to use such means against him.
Facing the decree issued by the Dean of Star Moon Academy, he was in no position to refuse.
"I'll see what kind of tricks this behind-the-scenes mastermind wants to play!"
Duan Gujin knew that there would probably be assassins along the way, or other unexpected events, and what he needed to do was to prepare for everything.
The next day, a teacher from Star Moon Academy came looking for Duan Gujin, who even emphasized that if Duan Gujin chose to back out at that time, no matter what reasons he gave, he would be expelled immediately.
Hearing such threats from the teacher, Duan Gujin guessed that surely the behind-the-scenes forces were pressuring Star Moon Academy.
"Duan Tianlang shouldn't have such capability yet, the only one who seems to be able to mobilize both Star Moon Academy and military forces appears to be Prime Minister Cao! Could Prime Minister Cao be making a move against me now? Is Prime Minister Cao specifically targeting me?"
After much consideration, he felt that the likelihood of it being Prime Minister Cao targeting him was the highest.
"If I refuse Star Moon Academy's action now, maybe that behind-the-scenes mastermind will find a reason to frame me. I'll go and see what kind of tricks this behind-the-scenes mastermind wants to play."
Thus, Duan Gujin did not refuse this action, agreeing to follow the team the next day.
When the next day arrived, he arrived early at the gathering point.
At the gathering point, he saw the other forty-nine students from Star Moon Academy.
"Could it be, they really intend to use them as cannon fodder?"
Duan Gujin thought and understood what the mastermind really meant by having fifty students advance together.
"The mastermind doesn't want others to suspect that this act is actually a targeted assassination against me, hence, they made a full show of it."
Once everyone had gathered, three teachers from Star Moon Academy led the group out.
In half an hour, the group reached a military camp outside the Capital City.
Soon, more than two hundred soldiers walked out of the military camp, joining forces with the students, all marching forward.
Duan Gujin extended his Divine Sense, being extremely cautious. He did not notice any enemies following behind.
Upon seeing those soldiers, his mind rapidly pondered for a while, but ultimately he gave up on trying to figure it out.
"What conspiracy does the mastermind have? It should become apparent later tonight. The reason for assembling so many students and soldiers now must be to use them as eyewitnesses! Hah!"
Time slowly passed, and an hour later, they arrived at the foot of a tall mountain.
Soon, an order came from the Academy's teachers for the students to rest in place, and Duan Gujin quickly took some Spiritual Medicine to restore some Primordial Power.
After fully regaining his strength, he concentrated on waiting for the enemy's arranged spectacle to unfold.
Indeed, 15 minutes later, Duan Gujin received instructions from the Academy, requiring him to secretly infiltrate the bandits' stronghold ahead along with nine other students and twenty soldiers.
"Hah, so they planned to kill me with this method?"
Duan Gujin sneered in his heart. Without speaking, he extended his Divine Sense to scan the other nine students and twenty soldiers.
After a while, he discovered that two of the soldiers were not ordinary soldiers.
"Assassins!"
Duan Gujin observed carefully for a while, then he was certain the two soldiers he had suspected earlier were not real soldiers, but assassins.
"I see! So that's what it is!"
Duan Gujin felt utter disdain for the mastermind using such tactics against him.
"Such a lame strategy!"
A little while later, an officer loudly shouted to Duan Gujin and the others: "Move out!"
Thus, Duan Gujin, along with the rest, followed closely behind the officer.
The two assassins that Duan Gujin had earlier suspected were split before and behind him, sandwiching him in the middle.
"Let's see how you perform later!"
Duan Gujin sneered internally, preparing to be ambushed from both sides and deal with the two assassins simultaneously.
They passed through a very narrow passage and then entered a mountaintop through that passage.
Duan Gujin scanned the surroundings with his Divine Sense and discovered that there were at least thirty people ambushing nearby.
Some were hidden beside boulders, others at high places out of their sight, and some were concealed in the woods.
"So they were ambushing here!"
Duan Gujin looked around and realized they had now reached a dead end.
If the ambushing individuals decided to act, they would become trapped, unable to escape.
"Everyone, be alert, there are enemies nearby! Everyone, be alert, there are enemies nearby!"
At this moment, Duan Gujin shouted loudly.
His shout caused the nearby students and soldiers to drop to the ground, nervously looking around.
"Everyone, don't move! You, do you want to die? There's no one here!"
At that moment, one of the assassins disguised as a soldier shouted.
"Are you blind?"
Duan Gujin took a deep breath, turning into a blur, disappearing into thin air.
After a while, everyone saw three figures appear amidst a large boulder ahead.
"It's the enemy!"
Seeing two extra people suddenly appear in front of them, everyone realized that indeed there were enemies ambushed here.
The assassin, seeing two individuals suddenly rushing out from the boulder ahead, realized that the hidden assassins had shown themselves.
"What to do?"
Faced with this sudden change, the assassin was momentarily stunned.
But quickly, he retrieved a flare from his storage ring, pulled the pin from beneath the flare, and a yellow signal flare soared into the skies.
The assassins who had been lying in ambush, seeing the flare, immediately rushed out, knowing that the signal meant to kill both the students and soldiers.
Seeing suddenly over fifty bandits rush out nearby, many students were terror-stricken, their legs trembling uncontrollably.
"Everyone, get ready for battle immediately!"
An Academy teacher shouted loudly.
Hearing the teacher's shout, the students at the scene finally calmed down.
They all knew very well, if they couldn't calm themselves immediately, their only fate would be death.
