Chapter 58: All Poisoned
"What's your name?" Xu Mengzhen asked.
"Duan Gujin!"
"Good, how many Martial Meridians have you unlocked?" Xu Mengzhen inquired.
Duan Gujin's eyes flickered, realizing he could not enter the Green Cloud Sect at this time.
Thus, he was moved to release his orange Martial Soul.
He quickly signaled to Meng Yun, asking her not to reveal that he had unlocked his third Martial Meridian.
Meng Yun, seeing the look from Duan Gujin, understood that he didn't want her to tell her Master about unlocking his third Martial Meridian.
Although she felt it odd, since Duan Gujin asked her not to mention it, she simply chose not to say anything.
If her Master inquired about it later, she would reveal the truth.
Seeing the orange Martial Soul released by Duan Gujin, Xu Mengzhen nodded with satisfaction and said, "Your talent is quite remarkable. Do you wish to join the Green Cloud Sect?"
"I do, but I cannot enter the Green Cloud Sect right now. I will join in the future!"
Duan Gujin stated, fully aware that he had to save the entire Green Cloud Sect in the future.
"Alright, I won't force you! Meng Yun, once you are done with your affairs, try to get to the Green Cloud Sect as soon as possible!" Xu Mengzhen instructed.
"Alright!"
Meng Yun nodded quickly in response.
Once Xu Mengzhen left, Duan Gujin went with Meng Yun to meet the Monarch of Country Gulai.
"Why did you just say you had unlocked only two Martial Meridians?" Meng Yun asked, puzzled.
Duan Gujin knew she would ask this, so he responded, "I simply don't want to attract unnecessary trouble. If your Master knew I had unlocked the third Martial Meridian, it might lead to a lot of unnecessary problems. I don't want your Master to probe too much about my own Master! Only you know about me unlocking the third Martial Meridian. Please don't let it out!"
"Alright, don't worry, I definitely won't speak of it! Let's pinky swear!"
Meng Yun, excited, stretched out her little finger and hooked it with Duan Gujin's little finger twice.
Duan Gujin felt Meng Yun was being childlike, thinking to himself that he was a person reborn through reincarnation, and yet, here he was, doing a pinky swear with a little girl.
"What? Are you not happy?" Meng Yun, seeing no expression on Duan Gujin's face, quickly inquired.
Duan Gujin, not wanting to dampen her spirits, replied, "No, I am very happy!"
"Why don't you accompany me to meet my father!"
In a palace within the Imperial Palace, Duan Gujin met the Monarch of Country Gulai.
Seeing the Monarch again, Duan Gujin noticed that his complexion seemed much better than the last time at the palace banquet.
After meeting the Monarch, Meng Yun whispered something into her father's ear.
"I never imagined that close to me, there would be someone with a heart as venomous as a scorpion!"
The Monarch took a deep breath, trying to calm himself, aware that the enemy lurking in the shadows was terrifyingly dangerous, scheming to poison him to death.
What pained him most was that until now, he had not identified the enemy.
If he found out who the enemy was, he would stop at nothing to completely annihilate them.
The more he thought, the angrier the Monarch became.
Suddenly, he violently coughed up blood.
Seeing her father coughing up blood, Meng Yun quickly administered medicine to him.
Duan Gujin stepped forward to examine the Monarch's condition, and after a while, he figured out the cause.
"Please, Your Majesty, remain calm. I will do everything in my power to identify the enemy who seeks to poison you!"
"Oh, then how will you search?" the Monarch asked curiously.
Duan Gujin's mind raced—he knew the person who slowly poisoned the Monarch would not easily reveal themselves.
"Your Majesty, the person who wants to poison you surely covets your position. May I ask, Your Majesty, who is the most likely to succeed the throne upon your demise?"
Duan Gujin inquired.
"This is a secret of the Imperial Family! I will not tell you! I understand what you mean!" the Monarch said somberly.
Duan Gujin immediately realized he had asked a question he shouldn't have, and hastily said: "Your Majesty, forgive me! As a commoner, I can only say that for this throne, many people are unscrupulous! Many are eying this dragon chair!"
"I understand what you mean! You need not explain!" the Monarch sighed.
After a moment, the Monarch suddenly asked, "By the way, Duan Gujin, I would like to know if you can examine the bodies of my sons, the Princes. I want to know if any of them have been poisoned."
"Alright!"
After pondering for a moment, Duan Gujin agreed.
"Good, Meng Yun, go call the eunuchs outside to come in!"
After a while, the Monarch had those eunuchs bring the four Princes into the Imperial Palace.
"Gentlemen, this is the physician I have invited. Extend your hands and let him take your pulse," the Monarch said.
"Alright!"
The four Princes had no choice but to comply. When they saw Duan Gujin, their expressions showed surprise—they hadn't expected the one taking their pulse to be a young man.
Though they were shocked, considering their father the Monarch was present, they didn't dare make a scene and allowed Duan Gujin to take their pulses.
After Duan Gujin had finished taking their pulses, the Monarch inquired, "Have you checked thoroughly?"
"Your Majesty, I have thoroughly examined them!" Duan Gujin answered.
"Then you may go back; I will inform you tomorrow if there is any news!"
The Monarch then let the four Princes leave, and after their departure, anxiously asked Duan Gujin,
"Duan Gujin, among those four, who has not been poisoned?"
Duan Gujin exhaled, knowing the Monarch asked this to find out which of the four Princes was most suspicious of wanting to poison him.
"Your Majesty, all four Princes have been poisoned!"
Duan Gujin quickly conveyed this unfortunate news to His Majesty.
Upon hearing Duan Gujin's words, both the Monarch and Meng Yun involuntarily gasped.
They had initially thought that among the four Princes, someone aimed to harm the Monarch, but they did not expect that all four Princes had been poisoned.
This was entirely outside of the Monarch's previous calculations; he had thought there would be one main culprit among the four, but it turned out all four had been poisoned.
"Is the poison they have the same as mine?"
the Monarch asked.
"Yes, Your Majesty, the poison that all four Princes have contracted is the same as Yours. Although this poison does not act immediately, it can damage various bodily functions and can reduce a person's lifespan by at least half,"
Duan Gujin said.
He said this to indicate to the Monarch that these four Princes were very likely not the true culprits.
In Duan Gujin's memory, although there was an antidote for Quicksand Fire Poison, if the poison remained in the body for a long time, it could significantly damage various bodily functions and reduce a person's lifespan.
Even if the true culprit eventually took the throne, their lifespan would be half that of a person who had not been poisoned.
Clearly, such a deal was not worth it.
