Carol's arrival silenced the room.
G'iah stared at the "god" before her, suddenly reminded of the annihilation her people had once faced.
It was this woman, with her half-Kree heritage, who had saved the Skrulls.
Without her, the Skrulls would have perished long ago.
All Skrulls harbored deep gratitude toward her.
Yet the existential crisis facing the Skrulls remained unsolved.
They had once pinned their hopes on Nick Fury, but he had failed to deliver salvation.
Now that Carol had returned, the Skrulls felt a glimmer of hope once more.
"Lady Carol, you're finally back," Talos said, stepping forward to offer the Skrulls' highest respect. His eyes were filled with desperation and longing.
"Please, save us. We've reached a dead end."
His steps were shaky as he led his people to kneel before Carol. She surveyed the Skrulls who had moments ago tried to attack Nick Fury, speaking calmly.
"For a second there, I regretted saving you."
At her words, the Skrulls lowered their heads in silence, not daring to retort.
They had attacked Carol's friend; they were guilty.
Before Talos could explain, Carol continued, "But I understand. I've seen countless displaced races across the universe, and their actions were far more extreme. The fact that you've endured this long is impressive."
The Skrulls exhaled in collective relief.
It seemed Carol had not abandoned them.
Talos's face lit up with gratitude. "Thank you for your forgiveness. A traitor has emerged among us, and all this chaos is their doing. We Skrulls only want to live in peace. Please help us through this crisis."
Carol gave a slight nod. "I'm already aware. Both the mutants and the other Skrull faction are vying to take over this world. That cannot be allowed. Leave the rest to me."
"With you here, everything will be fine," Talos said, his pent-up stress finally dissipating.
G'iah also felt a wave of relief. Gravik was incredibly strong, and she had never been able to defeat him.
Now that Carol had returned, Gravik's downfall seemed inevitable.
But G'iah couldn't shake her concern: two tigers could not coexist on one mountain.
Nick Fury had been ousted from S.H.I.E.L.D. by Spider-Man and Captain Carter.
If Carol sought to avenge her friend, she would inevitably clash with Spider-Man.
Spider-Man was powerful, but Carol seemed even stronger.
G'iah didn't want Spider-Man to be defeated, nor did she wish harm upon the Skrulls' savior.
Her thoughts swirled in chaos as she struggled to find a solution.
Before she could think further, Nick Fury broke the silence.
"Carol, I've been investigating. S.H.I.E.L.D. has deliberately kept a low profile during this incident. I suspect Spider-Man is trying to maintain a balance between the mutants, humanity, and the Skrulls. I think we can work with him."
"S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
Carol frowned slightly. "Did you leave voluntarily, or were you kicked out?"
"I left on my own. You know I've been wanting to retire," Nick Fury replied.
Carol looked pensive, then smirked.
"Anyone who can make you step down must be impressive. Spider-Man, huh? Interesting guy."
"Not just interesting—he's very strong," Fury said with a wry smile. "With his power and immortality, I had no chance against him."
"But now I'm back. You're the only winner here," Carol declared confidently.
"I want to see if these young superheroes have what it takes to protect Earth in my absence."
"Don't do anything rash. The situation is complicated," Fury cautioned.
Carol remained resolute. "No matter how complicated things get, overwhelming power can simplify everything."
"The war between mutants, Skrulls, and humans requires a show of strength to resolve. All sources of chaos must be eliminated."
She turned to Talos. "Where is the Skrull traitor? Let's deal with him first."
Before Talos could answer, Fury received a transmission.
"Carter just sent word—the mutants have found Gravik. They're at the White House."
"Perfect. We'll take care of them all at once."
Without wasting a second, Carol's body erupted with cosmic energy, transforming her into a radiant meteor that shot through the crumbling underground bunker and streaked across the sky.
"Boom!"
Debris rained down as the Skrulls stared at Carol's invincible figure with awe and a growing sense of dread.
Seeing this, G'iah activated her mutant genes. Wings unfolded from her back, kicking up a whirlwind as she soared in pursuit of Carol.
"G'iah!"
Talos called out, but she didn't respond.
"Does she intend to join the battle?" His face was lined with worry.
Fury attempted to reassure him. "Don't worry. With Carol there, G'iah will be fine."
Talos shook his head. "That's not what I'm concerned about."
He sighed deeply. "Since Captain Carter sent the message, Spider-Man must be there."
"You saw how Carol reacted—she's very interested in Spider-Man."
"You also know the kind of person Spider-Man is. Their first meeting is bound to be anything but friendly."
"If my guess is correct, G'iah… I fear she might make a mistake and anger the god who saved the Skrulls."
Fury's expression grew serious. "You have a point. It seems we need to be there."
"I'm just afraid we won't make it in time."
---
Washington, Evening
Pennsylvania Avenue.
A grand neoclassical white sandstone building collapsed with a deafening crash, sending steel beams and concrete flying through a cloud of thick dust.
"Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!"
Steel rods twisted midair, converging into a colossal iron club that descended with a roar, slicing through the air.
On the lush green lawn, a gray-haired man's face twisted with rage as his well-tailored suit shredded under the strain of grotesque muscles. His dark green skin rippled with pulsating veins, his jagged chin and pointed ears exposing his identity as a Skrull.
Muscles bulging, his body radiated raw power.
"Get out of my way!"
"Boom!"
As his fist collided with the massive iron club, the ground quaked violently. The shockwave tore up the grass beneath the Skrull's feet, and the iron club began to warp under the pressure.
"Interesting."
Standing atop the oval-shaped structure, under the fluttering flag, Erik sneered as he observed the scene.
"Not bad. As expected of the Super Skrull, Gravik. You're a worthy opponent."
With a casual wave of his hand, the flag behind him twisted into a spear under the influence of a magnetic field.
"Buzz!"
The spear shot forward at blinding speed, piercing through the iron club and heading straight for Gravik's heart.
"Splat!"
Caught off guard, Gravik stumbled backward as the spear impaled him, green blood splattering across the battlefield.
Clutching his wound, Gravik glanced toward the journalists lining the perimeter of the battlefield. His face contorted with anger.
That damn Erik had planned this all along.
By forcing Gravik to reveal his Skrull form through combat, Erik had dismantled his plan to infiltrate the heights of power.
As the cameras rolled, the President—now exposed as a Skrull—became the subject of global outrage.
"My God! How can this be?"
"The President is a fraud too?"
"What's real anymore?!"
"Oh, Lord! I'll never trust them again!"
"Go mutants! Take down that imposter!"
At this moment, the Skrulls became the common enemy of all.
Neither mutants nor humans could tolerate the existence of a race capable of mimicking any being.
"Rat-a-tat-tat!"
Above the White House, hovering aircraft unleashed a relentless barrage of firepower, lasers enveloping Gravik in a storm of destruction.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
The White House lawn erupted into a series of explosions, sending dirt and debris flying. Gravik's body darted between the beams of light, his silvery form evading the attacks effortlessly.
That was until he saw an entire building rise from the ground.
"Rumble!"
Gasps erupted from the journalists as Erik raised his hands, manipulating the magnetic field to lift the entire library into the air.
"Crack!"
Chunks of earth and debris fell away as the massive white building hovered above Gravik.
"What?!"
Gravik snarled, glaring at Erik as the building began its descent.
"You bastard, you're forcing my hand!"
With a roar, Gravik's body became a blur, dashing toward Erik. Behind him, the enormous building crashed to the ground, unleashing a shockwave that rippled through the battlefield.
Though Gravik missed his target, Erik remained calm, even as Gravik's spectral speed became a looming threat.
"Pathetic. All you've got is borrowed mutant DNA. I've been waiting for you."
With a flick of his fingers, Erik unleashed a swarm of metal shards from his sleeve, sending them flying in every direction.
Under his control, the fragments swept through the space around him. Gravik's rapid movements failed to evade them, and several shards pierced his body.
"Splat! Splat! Splat!"
Green blood spurted into the air as Gravik, his leg wounded, crashed into the reception hall with a resounding "Bang!"
Debris rained down as Erik moved his hands again, causing the reception hall to quake. Steel bars burst through the walls, twisting into a cage to trap Gravik within the ruins.
But Gravik's regenerative abilities far exceeded Erik's expectations.
"Boom!"
From behind, Gravik burst through the ceiling, his wounds healing instantaneously as flesh and muscle knitted together.
His glowing eyes unleashed searing beams of energy that sliced through the steel cage, splitting it in two.
Erik's face darkened. With a growl, he summoned more metal from the ground, obscuring the sunset with a storm of debris aimed to crush Gravik.
Gravik grinned wickedly as his form shimmered and vanished, turning invisible as he closed in on Erik.
The battle between the two devastated half of the White House.
---
In the President's office, Xia Luo stood by the window, watching the chaos unfold.
Beside him, Carter asked curiously, "When are you planning to step in?"
"No rush. Apocalypse hasn't shown up yet."
"But from the looks of it, Erik might not lose. And the other three Horsemen haven't made a move either," Carter pointed out.
"If all four Horsemen fight Gravik, he won't stand a chance. And if that happens, Apocalypse won't show himself."
Xia Luo shrugged. "Seems like your intel is outdated. Apocalypse only has one Horseman left—Erik."
"What?" Carter looked surprised. "What happened?"
"Nothing," Xia Luo replied with a smile. "All four Horsemen are double agents. Apocalypse will have no choice but to act."
"Double agents?"
Carter's expression turned strange. "You set this up long ago, didn't you? But Erik seems to be fighting hard."
Xia Luo stroked his chin thoughtfully. "He's planning to lose. But he wants to make sure it looks good, so Apocalypse doesn't catch on to his true intentions."
"This way, even if I'm unreliable, Erik can still use Apocalypse's power to achieve his goals without risking everything."
"So he doesn't trust you."
"Doesn't matter. It won't affect my plan."
As Xia Luo spoke, the battle seemed to reach its climax.
"Ahhh!"
Gravik, now enhanced by Spider-Man's "early" genetic modifications, activated the Hulk's DNA within him. With Spider-Man's physiology amplifying the mutation, his green body took on a faint purple hue. Ignoring the sharp blades of metal slicing into him, he tore through Erik's massive metal shield with overwhelming force.
"Boom!"
The magnetic field shattered under Gravik's might. Without hesitation, Erik leapt onto a metal disc, soaring into the sky.
"You're not getting away!"
Bat-like wings sprouted from Gravik's back as he gave chase. Before he could reach Erik, the surrounding buildings disintegrated into golden sand.
"What is this?"
Gravik's expression changed as a blue-armored figure emerged from a spatial vortex beside Erik.
The sheer presence of this newcomer sent shivers through Gravik.
"They've arrived," Xia Luo said with a small smile.
Carter, however, frowned. "Gravik seems to have activated your genes. When did they get their hands on your DNA?"
Xia Luo waved dismissively. "I don't always leave a clean corpse."
At this, Carter blinked in realization.
"I remember now—"
Xia Luo cut her off. "Forget it. Stick to the plan. I'm going to say hello to an old friend."
"Wait."
Carter grabbed his arm. "Let Apocalypse deal with Gravik first. That'll save us a lot of trouble."
Xia Luo rolled his eyes. "Why not team up with Gravik to take out Apocalypse first? Then we can deal with Gravik afterward. Easier, isn't it?"
"Would he agree to that?" Carter asked.
"Probably not."
Carter: "..."
"You're getting less fun."
"My bad. I'll go now. Bye~"
With that, Xia Luo leapt out of the window, firing his webbing to swing toward the battlefield.
To gain his next reset, he had to deal with Gravik himself.
But it seemed someone else might beat him to it.
From the darkening horizon, a brilliant meteor streaked downward, radiating a powerful aura that shocked everyone.
"Is that... Captain Marvel?"
