Restart, Spider-Man!

Chapter 186: Restart, Spider-Man! [186]

Swish, swish—

Scarlet maple leaves drifted through the air as terror flashed across Miles' face.

"We're doomed," he muttered.

Peter Parker sat on the ground, his beer belly poking out despite the Spider-Man suit that struggled to contain it. The disheveled figure bore little resemblance to the hero he was supposed to be.

"Maybe we should just surrender?"

"You're Spider-Man! How can you even say that?"

"Why not?"

As the two bickered, Lady Octopus grinned wickedly, her four mechanical arms reaching out toward the troublesome thieves.

Whoosh!

Suddenly, the maple forest was swept up in a ferocious gale. The whirling leaves surged skyward, enveloped in dazzling magical energy that stormed toward them like an unstoppable force.

The immense commotion drew everyone's attention.

"What is that?" Peter gaped.

Miles' expression changed. "I can feel it… That's Spider-Man's presence!"

"Spider-Man?" Lady Octopus' shocked gaze darted to the red-and-blue figure flickering within the whirlwind.

In an instant, the tornado of maple leaves intensified, the magic radiating from it shredding through the forest like a bulldozer. Trees snapped and cracked, their remains scattered by the violent energy that froze everyone in place with sheer awe.

"No!"

Lady Octopus scrambled to control her mechanical arms, trying desperately to flee. But the tornado bore down on her with overwhelming force, far outpacing her escape.

Seeing no other choice, she maneuvered her arms into a defensive barrier, hoping to buy herself a moment of respite.

Swish!

Boom!

As the maple tornado descended, Lady Octopus' expression twisted in panic. The instant the energy touched her, she realized just how terrifying her opponent was.

Under the relentless assault, she had no strength to resist.

"Nooo!"

Crash!

In a flash, the tornado tore through her, snapping her mechanical arms into pieces that were flung into the air.

The devastation left in its wake was astonishing: a massive trench hundreds of meters long scarred the forest, leaving Miles and Peter staring in stunned silence.

Thud!

Lady Octopus lay before them, buried in the dirt, coughing up mud. Her armor was cracked and broken, her once-intimidating mechanical limbs reduced to scrap. Stripped of her weapons, she looked more like a frazzled scientist than a menacing villain.

Peter patted his beer belly as he stood, his face frozen in disbelief.

He turned sharply, his instincts kicking in. Another Spider-Man had appeared, arms crossed, observing them.

"It really is Spider-Man!" Miles exclaimed, his delight evident.

The newcomer, Xia Luo Parker, cast a glance at Miles, then Peter, before locking eyes with them. Their shared spider-senses left no doubt about each other's identities.

"I'm Miles."

"I'm Peter Parker."

"Xia Luo Parker."

"And I'm Peter Parker too," a voice called out. From the treetops, a lizard-like Peter Parker leapt down, introducing himself with a toothy grin.

Miles blinked at the Lizard Parker, tilting his head in confusion. "Wait, are you Spider-Man too? I don't sense it from you."

"No, no, I'm not Spider-Man," Lizard Parker said, smirking. "I'm the Lizard Professor. You can call me Professor Peter. In my universe, I'm a famous superhero and a top-tier scientist."

As he spoke, he nudged Xia Luo's sleeve and whispered, "Don't blow my cover. Let me show off a little."

Xia Luo rolled her eyes. "Oh, sure. He's a genius scientist and the dreamboat of nine billion women."

Miles' expression turned reverent, while Peter subconsciously sucked in his gut, a mixture of admiration and bitterness in his gaze.

Same name, different destinies.

Lizard Parker basked in their looks of envy.

"Haha, you're both pretty great too," he said, hands on his hips.

"Great how?" Xia Luo deadpanned.

Lizard Parker faltered. "Uh… you've managed to outrun Doc Ock this far."

Miles and Peter exchanged awkward glances.

But before they could respond, something even more awkward happened.

Hum…

Xia Luo's chest emblem began to glow, a spider totem radiating light as seven layers of energy intertwined, drawing in a familiar presence.

Whoosh!

The sound of friction against maple leaves grew louder. A petite figure swung through the air, spider silk trailing behind her as she shot toward Xia Luo with gleeful speed.

"Not again!" Xia Luo groaned, his face darkening. He barely had time to react before Gwen Stacy tackled him to the ground.

"Nooooo!"

Seeing this, Lizard Parker clutched his head in despair. "What are you doing?!" he wailed, collapsing to his knees.

Xia Luo turned to him. "Haven't you seen this before?"

"When?!"

"Last time?"

"What last time?!"

Lizard Parker clutched his chest dramatically. "It hurts… It hurts too much…"

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a photo of Peggy Carter, reconstructed from memory.

Looking at her elegant figure, he sighed in relief. "Finally… some comfort."

Meanwhile, Xia Luo wrestled with Gwen, holding her back while also scrutinizing the photo.

"Carter prefers red lipstick, less curly hair, skirts over suits, and has a mole on her thigh. Oh, and her nightgowns are lace. Officially, she's a D-cup, but trust me, she's an E. It bothers her because it affects her combat performance. And from what I've observed, she's still growing. You know, genetics over effort and all that. Anyway, the other night, while she was lying in bed—"

"Stop!" Lizard Parker collapsed, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Why do you know so much?!" he cried. "I feel so betrayed! I've lost her all over again!"

Gwen, meanwhile, had recovered her senses, retreating to a corner as she hugged her knees and avoided eye contact.

"You… Be more careful next time," she murmured softly.

Xia Luo dusted off his clothes and nodded. "Sure. You too—try not to be so impulsive. It's crowded here."

The comment made Gwen even more flustered.

Miles and Peter exchanged bewildered looks.

"What just happened?" Miles asked.

Peter stroked his stubble thoughtfully. "Love triangle?"

"Quadrangle, I'd bet."

Ignoring them, Xia Luo checked his watch.

"Forty minutes left. Let's focus on the situation."

Straightening up, Gwen explained, "A strange force pulled me and Peter into this world. I haven't had enough time to figure out the details."

Miles raised his hand. "It's Kingpin. He built a particle collider and even killed this world's Spider-Man."

Lizard Parker wiped his tears. "How are those two things related?" he asked, his voice still trembling.

Xia Luo patted his shoulder. "Impressive. Even in your state, you're focused on the mission. That's a true hero right there."

Lizard Parker turned away, tears silently falling again.

Gwen seemed thoughtful. "The collider must've caused a dimensional rift, pulling other Spider-People into this world. That's the most likely explanation."

Xia Luo nodded. "So the next step is to deal with Kingpin and figure out how to send everyone back to their own universes."

He turned to Miles. "I don't have much time. Where's Kingpin? I'll handle him. The rest is up to you."

Miles hesitated. "You can't! Kingpin's too strong! He killed this world's Spider-Man. You can't face him alone."

"Strong?" Xia Luo raised an eyebrow. "Sorry, but in any universe, Kingpin is nothing more than a damn bug to me."

"You swore!" Gwen whispered.

"Oh, did I? My bad." Xia Luo checked his watch again. "Thirty-five minutes left."

Miles hesitated before pointing. "He should be at Kingpin Tower."

Hum!

As soon as the words left his mouth, Xia Luo conjured a portal with a wave of his hand, golden sparks flying.

"Whoa, magic?" Peter's jaw dropped. "Are you a magic Spider-Man?"

"Not quite," Xia Luo replied, stepping into the portal.

Miles exchanged a glance with the others and followed.

No one wanted to leave Xia Luo to face the danger alone.

Emerging from the portal, they found themselves facing two massive circular machines, crackling with particle energy.

Technicians bustled about below, oblivious to their arrival.

Xia Luo examined the collider, nodding slightly. "We'll need this machine to return, so destroying it isn't an option."

"Is that so?"

A deep voice echoed behind them.

From the shadows, Kingpin emerged, flanked by his henchmen.

"Kingpin!"

Miles' eyes widened in fear the moment he saw the man, and he instinctively hid behind Peter Parker.

He could never forget the horrifying moment when this figure had killed Spider-Man.

Cruel. Terrifying. Unstoppable.

Xia Luo, on the other hand, studied the bald giant clad in a sleek black suit, his head almost seeming to rest on his chest.

The absurdity of his appearance made Xia Luo chuckle.

"Well, since you're here, let's get started!" he said.

Kingpin's cold gaze swept over the group. "More than one Spider-Man, huh? Perfect. I'll take you all out together, and then no one will stand in my way."

Before he could finish, a crackle of electricity filled the air, and his massive frame hurtled backward, slamming into a reinforced alloy wall.

Boom!

The deafening crash echoed as Kingpin crumpled to the ground, his original spot now occupied by Xia Luo.

Kingpin slid slowly from the dented wall, collapsing in a heap on the floor. His face was pale as he coughed up a mouthful of blood, his vision growing blurry.

Even as his consciousness faded, he struggled to lift his gaze toward the particle collider.

That was his hope.

His hope of seeing his wife and child again.

But Spider-Man was too strong. The sheer helplessness overwhelmed him.

It was his fault. His wife and child had been killed by his enemies because of him.

He had vowed to pay any price to find them again.

Spider-Man had stood in his way, so he killed Spider-Man.

He had killed Spider-Man, and now another Spider-Man had killed him.

Fair enough.

Yet as his hopes crumbled, he couldn't accept it.

Would he see them again in death?

He hoped not.

A sardonic smile spread across Kingpin's face.

He was destined for hell.

And his wife and child?

Better they never meet again.

With endless regret, Kingpin's head slumped forward, lifeless.

The others stared in shock.

"How is this possible?" Miles exclaimed, his face filled with disbelief. "Kingpin… the man who killed Spider-Man… was taken down in seconds by another Spider-Man?"

Disheveled Peter Parker felt his blood surge with excitement.

"This is Spider-Man! A true hero of the city!"

But the excitement quickly gave way to despair as Peter lowered his gaze.

He had once wielded such power. But so what?

His life was still a mess.

No money. Divorced from Mary Jane. Uncle Ben and Aunt May gone. He was now just a piece of discarded trash.

No family. No hope.

Life was just a slow, meaningless drift.

Ever since arriving in this world, he was even more convinced: Peter Parker was cursed.

Here, even after becoming Spider-Man, Peter Parker had been killed by Kingpin. His identity had been exposed posthumously, and his grave stood desolate and forgotten.

Spider-Man's fate was to be erased from memory.

"What are you thinking about?"

Lizard Parker noticed Peter's gloom and patted his shoulder.

"Don't worry. Things will get better. Look at me—my life's a mess, but I'm still working on improving myself."

Peter shook his head. "You're not like me. Sure, you've had your heart broken, but you're still a world-class scientist and a superhero. Me? I'm just a failure."

He gave a bitter laugh, patting his beer belly.

Lizard Parker fell silent.

Maybe it was better not to explain.

Away from home, you made your own reputation.

Meanwhile, Xia Luo had dealt with Kingpin's henchmen in a flash of electricity.

Turning to Miles, he said, "Kingpin's still alive. I didn't finish him off. The rest is up to you. If you can keep him in prison for life, consider this your first test as Spider-Man."

"Me?" Miles pointed at himself, astonished. "I… I can't do it!"

"Listen. With great power comes great responsibility. You're Spider-Man now. This is your responsibility."

"With great power comes great responsibility…" Miles murmured, lost in thought.

Peter Parker, hearing the familiar words, looked even more somber.

"Xia Luo Parker… in your world, did Uncle Ben…?"

Xia Luo raised an eyebrow. "Uncle Ben's doing great. Thanks to some magical artifacts, he and Aunt May are younger than ever. They took over Kingpin's operation and now run Hell's Kitchen. Aunt May even doubled my allowance recently."

"What?!"

Peter's emotions were a mix of happiness and envy.

"Allowance doubled? I never had anything like that back in my day!"

Ignoring Peter's outburst, Xia Luo glanced at Gwen and Lizard Parker.

"Time's almost up. I have to go. Who knows when we'll meet again…"

"Tomorrow," Lizard Parker interrupted. "I can reset the timer and summon you again in 24 hours."

Xia Luo frowned. "That thing can only summon Spider-Men randomly. There's no guarantee it'll be me next time."

"Random? What do you mean, random?" Lizard Parker asked, confused.

Xia Luo fell silent.

He understood now.

He was the only one subject to random summons.

For everyone else, the device summoned fixed targets.

So this is what it's like to truly be… someone else's summon.
