Chapter 6: Chapter 6- Bird Demon and Dinner

At that moment, Ezra's mind seemed to shut down, unable to process Shirley's words. The mention of Sentinels—elite soldiers who once fought against monsters like the ones now prowling the city—left him reeling.

To Ezra, the idea seemed almost mythical. Sentinels were supposed to be the best of the best, warriors trained to hold the line against the horrors spilling out from the unknown. Nexus HQ, their base of operations, was rumored to be a fortress deep in the inner city. It was a place of order and security, a stark contrast to the chaos of the outer rings.

It was distant, almost a mythical place, nestled in the heart of the inner city where the wealthy and privileged resided. A world untouched by the squalor and struggle of the outer rings. It was a realm of exclusivity, a utopia of technology, security, and excess. People like Ezra could only dream of seeing it.

And Shirley… Shirley had been one of them?

Ezra stared at the older man across the flickering fire, his mind scrambling to reconcile the image of a grizzled, rough-edged survivor with the disciplined, unstoppable soldiers he'd heard about in whispers. Sentinels were supposed to be legends, practically untouchable. Yet here Shirley was, in this decrepit shelter, skinning a bird like it was just another Tuesday.

"A Sentinel?" Ezra muttered aloud, unable to stop himself. "You were a Sentinel?"

Shirley didn't look up, his blade steady as it cut through feathers and flesh. "Yeah," he said simply, his voice low. "A couple decades back."

Ezra's brows furrowed. "But… why are you here? Shouldn't you be… I don't know… in Nexus HQ or something?"

Shirley finally glanced up, his steel-gray eyes narrowing. "You think every Sentinel makes it out clean, kid? You think we all get a nice retirement package and a parade? Life ain't that simple."

Ezra hesitated, unsure how to respond. The way Shirley's tone hardened told him there was more to the story, but he knew better than to press. Still, his mind raced. Nexus HQ wasn't just some base—it was the heart of the inner city, a bastion of power and privilege. People in the outer rings like Ezra didn't even dream of going there. It was another world entirely.

Sentinels were the only ones who left its walls, venturing into the dangerous, monster-infested wastelands to protect what little remained of humanity. They were fighters, strategists, and survivors, trained to face the unimaginable. And Shirley had been one of them.

"Why'd you leave?" Ezra asked softly, the words slipping out before he could stop them.

Shirley's jaw tightened. "None of your business."

The sharpness of his tone stung, and Ezra flinched. "Alright, alright. No need to bite my head off."

Silence settled between them again, broken only by the crackle of the fire. Ezra leaned back against the wall, staring into the flames as his thoughts swirled. He wanted to ask more, to understand what had brought Shirley from the halls of Nexus HQ to this crumbling shelter, but the man's closed-off expression warned him not to push.

Before Ezra could dwell on it any longer, something shifted in the air.

He sat up straighter, his senses prickling with unease. The warmth of the fire suddenly felt distant, the shadows around them seeming to stretch and deepen.

"Shirley?" Ezra began, his voice barely above a whisper.

He turned to where Shirley had been sitting moments ago—but the older man was gone. The skinned bird lay discarded on the floor, feathers scattered across the cracked tiles.

Before Ezra could react, a strong hand clamped over his mouth, yanking him backward. His heart leapt into his throat as Shirley's arm wrapped around his chest, pulling him into the shadows.

"Quiet," Shirley hissed, his voice barely audible.

Ezra's breath hitched as he tried to steady himself, but the tension in Shirley's grip made his pulse quicken. The older man's body was coiled like a spring, ready to snap into action.

Then Ezra heard it—a low, creaking sound, like floorboards groaning under a massive weight. The noise echoed through the shelter, sending a chill down his spine. He couldn't see anything in the dim light, but the sound grew louder, closer.

His eyes darted to the doorway, and his blood ran cold.

A monstrous figure began to emerge from the shadows, its hulking form illuminated by the faint glow of the fire. It moved slowly, deliberately, each step causing the floor to groan beneath its weight. The creature's skin was a patchwork of dark black feathers, its limbs unnaturally elongated. Its eyes—four of them, glowing with a sickly yellow light—locked onto Ezra, unblinking and predatory.

The air grew heavy, thick with an oppressive aura that pressed down on Ezra's chest. He struggled to breathe, his fear rooting him in place.

The monster's movements were unsettlingly slow, almost calculated, as if it were savoring the moment. Its elongated claws scraped against the walls, leaving deep gouges in the crumbling plaster.

Ezra's wide eyes flicked to Shirley, who still held him firmly in place. The older man's face was unreadable, his sharp gaze locked on the creature. He radiated calm, but Ezra could feel the tension in his grip—a silent readiness to act.

The monster snarled—a guttural, wet sound that made Ezra's stomach churn. It tilted its grotesque head, as if studying them, its glowing yellow eyes unblinking. Then it moved, each step deliberate, its talons clicking against the floor.

Shirley's grip tightened, his fingers digging into Ezra's arm.

"Don't move," Shirley whispered, his voice steady but firm.

Ezra's heart pounded so loudly he was sure the creature could hear it. His mind screamed at him to run, to do something—anything—but Shirley's calm command rooted him in place.

The creature's lips curled back, revealing jagged, yellowed teeth. It let out a low growl that reverberated through the room, shaking loose bits of plaster from the ceiling. Ezra winced, his hands instinctively flying to his ears to block out the noise.

Then the creature stopped. Its head twitched slightly, its glowing eyes narrowing as it sniffed the air. Slowly, it turned its gaze to a corner of the room where something shiny caught its attention.

Ezra's heart dropped. The skinned chicken.
