Chapter 11: Alpha
The dense canopy of the forest loomed ominously under the shroud of night. Camp lights flickered against the shadows cast by towering trees, their trunks swaying ever so slightly in the cool night breeze. Kyle rubbed his temples, exhaustion weighing heavily on him. Night shifts were the bane of his existence, especially after being stuck on day shift just hours prior.
"I swear this schedule's gonna kill me before anything out there does," Kyle muttered, his fingers tightening around his rifle. His breath misted in the chilly air as he looked over at Bennett, who was casually cleaning his weapon by the fire.
"You still thinking about what you told that guy earlier?" Bennett asked without looking up.
Kyle groaned. "Don't remind me. I slipped up big time. I can only hope he's one of the quiet types who doesn't spread secrets."
Bennett snorted, shoving a fresh clip into his rifle. "The way things are going, secrets don't stay buried for long. Command's enlisting civilians soon. Things are escalating too damn fast—mutant attacks, these forest creatures, everything. We're gonna need everyone we can get."
Kyle grimaced. "You ever wish you had powers, Bennett? Like those... mutants? Be able to do more than just shoot?"
"Every day," Bennett said, his tone surprisingly somber. "But I've seen what some of those freaks can do. If I get powers, I don't want to lose my damn mind with them."
Their conversation was interrupted by a faint rumbling beneath their feet.
Kyle froze. "Did you feel that?"
The rumbling grew louder, turning into a full-on quake that sent loose equipment rattling. A distant, guttural howl echoed from the forest, followed by dozens more in a chilling chorus.
Then came the sirens.
"ATTENTION ALL UNITS. HOSTILE WAVE INCOMING. TAKE DEFENSIVE POSITIONS IMMEDIATELY."
Kyle snapped into action, grabbing his rifle and sprinting toward the wall. Soldiers around him rushed to their posts, shouting orders and securing their positions. The rumble of monstrous footsteps grew louder.
"Sweet mother of God," Kyle whispered as the first beast emerged from the treeline.
It was a wolf—no, a monstrosity—its size dwarfing any natural predator. Behind it, a tide of nightmares poured out: massive snakes slithering like living shadows, lizards the size of SUVs scrambling on all fours, and grotesquely enlarged wolves with glowing eyes and slavering jaws.
The cool forest breeze was deceptive against the chaos erupting at the military encampment. Kyle adjusted his helmet as the rumbling in the ground became louder, his heart pounding like a war drum. He had barely recovered from his double shift, and now this. The loudspeaker crackled to life, barking orders over the camp.
"ALL UNITS! PREPARE FOR ENGAGEMENT! BEAST WAVE APPROACHING!"
Kyle gripped his rifle, the cold steel a temporary solace. Beside him, Bennett muttered, "They just keep coming, don't they? This time feels worse."
Kyle nodded grimly. "We're living in nightmares. Focus on staying alive. That's all we can do."
"FIRE AT WILL!" the commander's voice echoed through the camp.
The silence broke into chaos as the soldiers unleashed a torrent of bullets. Muzzle flashes lit the night, and the deafening roar of gunfire was matched only by the horrifying howls, hisses, and screeches of the attacking monstrosities. Kyle lined up a shot on a serpent lunging toward the wall, the creature's massive head crashing into the barrier as bullets peppered its body. He emptied his magazine, reloaded swiftly, and shouted to Bennett, "Focus on the flyers! They're targeting the watchtowers!"
Bennett, trembling, raised his rifle. "I see them!"
Above, monstrous birds swooped down, their massive wings stirring the air like a storm. One dove toward a soldier, talons extended. The man screamed as he was carried skyward, his weapon clattering to the ground. Kyle aimed quickly, firing at the bird, the shot connecting with a sickening thud. The soldier dropped from the bird's clutches, landing on the wall with a painful thump but alive.
"Stay sharp!" Kyle barked as another bird descended. This one attacked Bennett directly, its talons slashing across his torso. Blood sprayed, and Bennett fell to the ground.
"BENNETT!" Kyle roared, pulling his sidearm. He fired at the beast repeatedly, aiming for its glowing eyes. The bird shrieked and collapsed, but Bennett's blood soaked the ground.
"Apply pressure, damn it!" Kyle yelled, shoving his own hands onto Bennett's wounds. "Stay with me!"
Bennett gasped weakly. "You... better get ready. It's... not over."
Kyle looked up, his eyes widening in terror. The beast tide wasn't just continuing—it was escalating. The smaller creatures had begun to retreat, replaced by larger monstrosities. A bison-sized wolf emerged from the treeline, its golden eyes gleaming with intelligence and malice. It let out a thunderous howl that shook the air, freezing everyone in their tracks.
"What the hell is that?" Kyle whispered, his voice trembling.
"The Alpha..." Bennett rasped, before losing consciousness.
The gates of the wall screeched open, and Kyle turned, his breath catching. The mutant soldier from earlier stepped out, his massive frame gleaming in the dim floodlights. His armor was etched with scars, and he carried a large gun in one hand, a heavy shield in the other. At his hip was a combat khukri, its blade glinting ominously.
The Alpha wolf locked eyes with the mutant, and for a moment, the battlefield seemed to hold its breath. Then, with an ear-piercing growl, the wolf charged.
The mutant didn't flinch. He raised his shield and met the beast's charge head-on. The impact was catastrophic, sending shockwaves through the ground. Soldiers stumbled, and Kyle was thrown to his knees as the two titans collided.
The Alpha snapped its massive jaws, aiming for the mutant's head, but the shield held firm. The mutant shoved the wolf back with a grunt, firing his gun point-blank into its shoulder. The wolf yelped but retaliated with a powerful swipe of its claw, tearing into the mutant's side. Sparks flew as the claws scraped against the reinforced armor.
"Damn it!" Kyle cursed, watching in awe. The mutant spun, his khukri now in hand, and slashed at the Alpha's flank. Blood sprayed, staining the ground, but the beast didn't retreat. Instead, it lunged again, its massive paws swiping furiously.
The mutant ducked, rolled, and countered with a devastating uppercut using the shield. The Alpha staggered, momentarily dazed, but quickly recovered, its growl resonating through the camp.
The battle raged on, each clash echoing like thunder. The Alpha's cunning was clear—it feinted, dodged, and used its immense strength to keep the mutant on the defensive. But the mutant was relentless, his movements precise despite his injuries. The two seemed evenly matched, their fight a deadly dance of power and skill.
Kyle, still kneeling by Bennett, whispered to himself, "What kind of world are we living in now?"
Suddenly, a piercing howl erupted from the forest, and the Alpha wolf paused, turning its head. Another wave of beasts was emerging from the shadows—this one even more monstrous. The soldiers on the wall shouted in panic as the mutant glanced over his shoulder, his face grim.
"KYLE!" a voice from the radio screamed. "FALL BACK! We can't hold them all!"
Kyle stared at the encroaching horrors, his heart pounding as the mutant raised his shield once more and charged into the fray. The gates began to close behind him, cutting off the camp from the carnage outside.
The last thing Kyle saw before the gates sealed shut was the Alpha lunging for the mutant, its fangs bared, as the forest erupted in chaos.
