First lesson
The team building exercise went off fairly smoothly minus the small problem of the elder nevermore and deathstalker that showed up towards the end. but they were taken care of by a group of students that included yang , ruby , weiss and jaune in it. once all of the students had returned with their artifacts ozpin lead the students to the auditorium where leon stood on the stage behind ozpin with glenda. ozpin teamed up all of the students while giving his usual welcome but there was a change at the end as he turned and waved leon forward.
"This is vermilion drake and he has been operating as a hunter since he was ten , i have personally verified his knowledge and skill in this regards. due to these circumstances he won't be joining you as a fellow student but as a teacher. please be sure to remember this when you interact with him as he has officially been given all of the authority that comes with his position." ozpin said before dismissing the crowd of students to their dormitories. "you know i'm going to get challenged right away don't you?" leon asked ozpin who nodded.
"I believe you will handle that situation without much issue." ozpin said before leaving leon to his devices. 'this is going to be a pain in the ass , whatever lets put these guys through their paces.' he thought wickedly. the first week of the school year was mostly the students getting familiar with their teachers but when saturday came and it was time for leons first lesson it was very different. The area leon chose as his teaching spot was a fairly large outside area on the plateau that beacon was situated on that he had terraformed temporarily into a forested swamp.
Leon had camouflaged himself to blend in perfectly with the area so when the class arrived none of them seemed to notice him. "man what was professor ozpin thinking making this person a teacher , he's late to his own class!" a sturdy brown haired guy named cardin complained loudly getting awkward looks from the rest of the students. "first lesson." leon said spooking the whole class who looked around trying to figure out where he was. he stepped away from his location letting the students see him. "environmental perception , the subject of todays lesson." leon said with a smirk.
"The mind is designed to blend colors and patterns together in order to recognize the surroundings. much like mr.winchester showed , with the correct knowledge this perception can be tricked into ignoring what is right in front of it. the lesson today is to show you not to let your guards down just because you can't see your enemy. there are grim who are known to submerge themselves in mud and even leaves in order to ambush hunters. should i have been one such grim more than a few of you would have been injured if not outright killed in this situation." leon lectured seriously.
"Why would we even need to know this anyway almost none of us will likely ever use the knowledge?" cardin asked obviously not liking having been used as an example. leon nodded "you are half right mr.winchester but a question for the class." leon said before addressing the whole class. "how many of you function in the scouting role?" he asked and close to a quarter of the class raised their hands. "that mr.winchester is who needs this knowledge , while it is still useful in the case you have no scout and need to take that role yourselves." leon explained and cardin wisely remained quiet.
leon then went on to explain the ins and outs of environmental perception as well as showing how they could use it themselves to trick the grim. by the end of the class no one thought leon was unqualified to teach not even cardin who had even managed to learn a thing or two. leon went through this same lesson in a similar fashion two more times that day since there were three separate classes of first years. someone had recorded the first lesson on their scroll and posted it on the school site where it got beaming reviews.
Ozpin watched through the video and patted himself on the back for this idea since it was clear leon was an excellent teacher. he saw that even the unplanned smearing cardin did at the start was incorporated into the lesson flawlessly. the best part in ozpins opinion was how none of the other teachers lessons did anything more than glance over this topic despite how important it was. as leon explained this lesson was like gold for scout type hunters since it fell perfectly in the category of things they needed to know.
