Reincarnated Wehraboo's Revenge

Chapter 53: All that remains is to wait

After the orphanage incident, peace returned to Erika and her friends' life.

The people Erika was weary of didn't bug her much except for some occasional gazes and sharp remarks.

However, Maruschka's magic teacher Schorner had made a 180 degree turn and was now more reluctant to talk to Maruschka.

He skipped classes most of the time and whenever he came, he'd finish his lessons early and wouldn't let Maruschka question anything.

As a result Maruschka would have more free time in the evening.

In this time she'd wait for Erika to return along with Bauer.

And at this time she'd eat up Bauers ears with declaring her jealousy and dissatisfaction with how Hanna just stuck to Erika all day.

"Why are you just complaining like you're milady's wife?!" Bauer said unable keep her sanity.

Maruschka suddenly felt embarrassed. She never thought of Erika that way.

"I-it's not like that. H-how can a girl become the wife of another?" Maruschka said.

Her face was red from the shyness she felt and gazed downwards. However, she brushed off any such idea.

Meanwhile in the Raubenbraum territory, the Luftwaffe had found out the position of the Royal Army.

They were placed a little further down a small muddy road that was left unused for several years.

The position was in a moderate distance from the territory.

A distance which may take two to three days to travel for a fully equipped army.

This distance was deemed good enough for taking immediate action by the commanders of the army and knights.

They wanted a distance close enough to move in but also far enough that it wouldn't arouse suspicion from the Raubenbraums.

What the luftwaffe pilots found was something sinister.

They reported immediately after finding out the position.

There was not only the Royal Army and Royal knights in that camp.

The pilots found soldiers and knights from other feudal forces as well.

The joint army numbered in the thousands and were joined by hundreds of others everyday.

They also reported that the force was prepared and well equipped with siege weapons like catapults and mangonels.

When Stiegler heard about it, he knew that the Royal Army was preparing to take the Raubenbraum land by force.

He immediately went to the OKW building to meet Emil and reported him of the situation.

Emil along with the other staff officers were all surprised to know the well preparedness of the Royal Army. However, they could understand the reasons.

It was well known that the Raubenbraum duchy was the most prosperous land in all of Hohenstaufia. Even more than the royal capital.

Not to mention the towns and villages in this land was well fortified to prevent monster incursions.

The duchy also had many knights in reserve due to the years of struggle with the monsters from the dark forest before.

So the kingdom had be cautious while preparing to take over this territory and anything less than the full might of the king and every other nobles combined would be suicide.

As per Erika's orders, the Grossdeutschland and the Brandenburg regiments moved to the border.

Since the place which faced the royal army camp was unused and abandoned, the Wehrmacht was able to discreetly take their positions.

The GD regiment dug itself in, while the Brandenburg regiment remained as mobile reserve.

The soldiers got busy with digging long and zigzagged trenches, dugouts and machine gun emplacements.

Trench mortars were placed inside the trench in a distance of 200 meters, while the machine guns were placed slightly closer.

Behind the machine guns, the artillery was placed.

They were placed close to the trenches because of their short range though this was contrary to standard practice.

A web of communications trenches connected the front to the rear.

These communication trenches were used to supply to troops at the front and also to relay orders using the field telephones.

The trench was in an arched shape over a kilometer wide. The troops were regularly rotated amongst the three battalions of the regiment.

Since the preparations were hasty, and concrete not being available in this age, only trenches and dugouts could be made.

As for the machine gun emplacements, they were simply the machine guns themselves with tripods placed behind the front trench.

The 7.5cm cannons were too small to be put into a gunpit. Though they were well protected by troops of artillery and Flak guns.

The regiment scout teams that used the machine gun mounted horse carts were put into reserves to launch counter attacks and harass the enemy.

Barriers were placed in front of the trench with some small gaps in them to allow the scouts to move in and out.

These gaps also provided traps to be turned into killing fields by the machine gunners behind once the enemy try and cross.

Artillery observers were placed under cover of bushes in the forward area which was marked with flags of various colors at various range to utilise the artillery effectively.

Luftwaffe continued to scout the position over the enemy for any suspicious movement.

The gliders were also ready to strafe the enemy in case they moved towards the border.

In one week the preparations were done and the Wehrmacht was ready to have its first human encounter.

In the academy things were hasty.

A festive mood was prevalent as the day of the graduation ceremony for the third years came closer.

The academy was being decorated in various colors.

Everyday after class the students helped professional decorators with various small works to increase the pace of the preparations.

In the evening after the daily works, Maruschka would learn how to dance with Erika.

Hanna also came to keep an eye on Maruschka.

"You don't have to take the trouble to come here everyday Hanna. I am sure you are tired after classes and the preparations." Erika said.

She was worried that Hanna was over exerting herself.

"Yes, lady Erika is right. Lady Hanna, you should rest at this time in your own room." Maruschka added.

She couldn't enjoy dancing with Erika in Hanna's presence.

Whenever, Maruschka made a mistake or stepped on Erika, Hanna would get fired up.

She'd scold her for such mistakes and hurting Erika.

Erika also gets tired soon not from dancing with Maruschka but from the handling the cat fights the two got themselves in.

Moreover Hanna wouldn't talk directly to Maruschka but rather to Erika.

The only person who enjoyed it was Bauer. She'd laugh in her bed looking the two girls while Erika tried to calm them.

Hanna ignored Maruschka's words and spoke to Erika.

"I can't let a commoner steal something that belongs to me. I must keep an eye out for that thief."

"Sigh, what'd I do with the two of you." Erika said.

She was tired but also somewhat enjoyed the situation since it made things livelier in the otherwise boring times.

Soon the day of the celebration approached.

In the main hall of the academy a huge ball was organised.

Erika lended one of her dresses to Maruschka to wear for the ceremony.

While Hanna came in and declared the day before the ball with a beautiful light peach dress in her hand that Erika would be wearing that.

And that she'd take no other argument on this subject.

On the other hand, the prince sat with his father the king, his trusted knights along with Wielding and the prime minister and his son Paul to plan his actions as well.

Various evidences were crafted against the duke Walther Raubenbraum.

Tax evasion, espionage and sabotage of the Royal Army.

These are the accusations the prince and his supporting nobles came up with.

They forged letters and false documents on the duke that showed his 'crimes'.

A group of royal knights were placed near the duke's house with orders to move in and arrest the duke and any other visitor who maybe present.

The knights were told to move in the afternoon when the ball had commenced.

Evidences were crafted against Erika as well.

The magic orb that turned black on the first day and the students who tried to assault Erika along with the evidence of using drugs on Maruschka.

The prince also brought in knights under the command of Wielding to arrest Erika as well.

After that the prince would join the Royal Army and advance on the Raubenbraum territory along with the nobles.

The nobles tried to persuade him to use Erika and Walther as hostages to prevent the Raubenbraum knights to fight.

But the prince denied it outright saying it'd be a hassle to move the duo to the border.

He actually wanted the nobles to destroy themselves in fighting while the Royal Army's strength is preserved.

This won't be achieved if the Raubenbraum forces just lay down their arms.

So everyone looked forward to the next day of the ball.

Everything was set. The Royal Army of Hohenstaufia, the combined forces of the nobles and the Wehrmacht.
