Volume 3 Chapter 15
The knights had a brief negotiation with Enrique and began inspecting the items in his merchant convoy.
Enrique’s men were pushed aside, probably to prevent them from interfering.
With the protection of the Zone of Silence, I still held my breath, trying not to make any unnecessary noise.
The knights’ armor, provided by Duke Bogia, was the best available, with defense and attributes far surpassing any adventurer or guard we had encountered before.
Additionally, there were many adventurers obviously not on our side. If exposed, the situation would be more than just dangerous.
But once we get past this checkpoint… Lily will be safe…
Even I, not particularly devout, found myself inwardly praying to the gods of the Ablan faith, hoping for our safe passage.
As Enrique had anticipated, the knights sped up their inspection due to the urgency of delivering gifts for the Third Princess’s wedding.
Many of Enrique’s gifts were porcelain, which was difficult for the knights to handle in their armor.
The jade lion was also inspected. The knights, assuming it was a valuable item, didn’t pay it much attention.
The skill 【X-Ray Vision】 requires high levels of stealth and investigation, and isn’t easier to learn than appraisal. Fortunately, no one seemed to have used X-Ray Vision on us, possibly assuming the jade lion was solid.
Several knights also checked the bags of Enrique and his companions. They could use their law enforcement privilege to inspect all contents, ensuring no one was smuggling contraband.
At this moment, Lily and I were the biggest contraband.
Lily, too scared to breathe, clung to me tightly, even burying her face in my chest for comfort.
I gently stroked her back, reassuring her that we were still safe.
The knights didn’t find us.
They did notice the compartment under the carriage, inspecting it thoroughly after removing the wooden panels.
Realizing it was a false alarm, they didn’t linger on our carriage.
Watching the last knight turn to inspect other carriages, I felt a huge weight lift off my heart, only then realizing my palms were soaked with sweat.
Hang in there, Lily. We’re almost safe.
About three minutes later, the knights finished their inspection, exchanging a few words with each other.
I couldn’t hear them clearly, but they didn’t seem to have found any contraband.
After all, besides us, Enrique wouldn’t add absurd items to the gifts for the Third Princess.
I kept using my X-Ray Vision to monitor their every move. Every second felt like an eternity, and I prayed nothing unexpected would happen. Just get through the barrier, just get through…
After using X-Ray Vision countless times, the knights finally finished their shift, and the guards stopped other adventurers and pedestrians, signaling for Enrique’s convoy to pass.
“Thank goodness… Lily!”
I suppressed the urge to shout with excitement.
“Quiet, just a little longer. I’m going to turn off the Zone of Silence.”
“Okay!”
Lily nodded obediently, more composed than me due to her lack of X-Ray Vision.
With knights and guards lining both sides, they watched the convoy slowly depart.
The first carriage passed through the narrow exit and out of the barrier.
Then the second.
Our pace was slow, but finally, it was our carriage’s turn.
Outside would be Lily’s world of freedom.
But we couldn’t let our guard down at the start… We needed to watch for adventurers who might target Lily after leaving Obey. Lily would have to hide her identity for a while, ensuring safety before heading to town.
Though the sun had set, the world outside the aurora barrier felt sunny and free.
As the horse’s head crossed the barrier, everything seemed normal.
Although the exit looked barrier-free, it was still covered, or else I wouldn’t need to deactivate the Zone of Silence.
The horse passed through unhindered, followed by the wooden boards and the jade lion.
It felt like passing through an infrared security check.
Just one more step to freedom, my mind started wandering.
And then—
The 【Barrier】 touched Lily.
“Ah—!”
“?! ”
Lily recoiled as if electrocuted, pulling back her left hand.
Why did Lily…?
The horse, of course, didn’t stop because of Lily.
As her entire body touched the barrier, she twisted violently, screaming in agony. The barrier, like an impassable electric grid to Lily, created a contradiction as the carriage, which couldn’t pass through, continued moving, pressing Lily against the transparent wall of the barrier.
The barrier unleashed punishment on Lily.
Whether it was lightning magic or something else, it didn’t matter.
Without hesitation, I embraced Lily, broke the jade lion with my bare hands, and leaped out of the carriage with her.
Why…?!
The lowest level of 【Barrier】 shouldn’t have this function, right?
I was sure that the barrier that allowed exits to be established for passage was the lowest level. It couldn’t precisely target an individual for defense, or else
why would we have planned to smuggle through?
Low-level barrier smuggling was supposed to be feasible. We all believed it, whether it was Lady Chris or Enrique. Smuggling seemed the most reasonable way out of our predicament.
But the reality was—Lily was specifically stopped.
