Volume 1 Chapter 59
[Nobility], along with [Merchant Guilds] and [Mercenary Corps], are the three main guild organizations for game players, but the composition of the [Nobility] is different from the other two.
To create a [Mercenary Corps], you simply need to gather enough manpower and complete assessment tasks issued by the Adventurer’s Guild. It’s the easiest type of guild to establish. The process for [Merchant Guilds] is longer and lacks a fixed procedure chain, but generally involves opening shops, earning money, expanding the business, and setting up branches. Once you reach a certain scale, you can establish a [Merchant Guild].
As for [Nobility], it depends entirely on an individual player’s efforts. Only those who gain recognition from nobles holding at least the title of Earl have a chance of becoming a Baron; otherwise, they can only become a knight at most. Due to limited land and slow frontier development, the [Nobility] is the rarest among guild organizations in terms of numbers.
Once a player is granted a fiefdom, the Nobility guild organization is considered established. Managing your territory and enfeoffing vassals become indispensable tasks. You can even experience the joy similar to farming in light novels while role-playing as a noble.
On the other hand, nobles are the actual rulers of the territory. Therefore, they have the privilege to issue new policies, offer rewards for capturing specific individuals, and even initiate wars for appropriate reasons.
Various reasons can be used to initiate a war. The most common is claiming rightful ownership over a particular territory. Although false claims often occur, it’s not an issue as long as the current lord doesn’t speak up. Other reasons include accusing the opponent of heresy, fabricating a crime, or invoking the church’s [Final Judgment]. If you’re shameless enough, you can even openly accuse the other party of sleeping with your wife, and then no one would interfere with your war.
In summary, [Nobility] symbolizes authority. Even when searching for criminals, it’s impossible to search within a noble’s private territory.
Seeing that the deed Trafalgar produced was legitimate, Uncle François reluctantly put away his spear.
“This is difficult for us, Baron Trafalgar. We are merely doing our job; there’s a wanted criminal inside.”
“A wanted criminal?”
Baron Trafalgar hesitated for a moment, seemingly surprised by this development. He pondered for a bit, glanced at me, and chose not to back down to Uncle François.
“Are you suggesting that I am harboring a fugitive?”
“You misunderstand…”
Uncle François said with a wry smile. His situation was awkward. The appearance of Baron Trafalgar had disrupted the original situation. Although François knew Lily was inside, he couldn’t search Trafalgar’s privately owned villa.
Trafalgar simply said, “I see,” and walked straight toward the front door without further argument with Uncle François.
“Greetings, Lord Trafalgar…”
“No need for pleasantries; I have no intention of hosting you.”
Up close, Trafalgar was handsome, not as strikingly so as Evan of Smiley, but definitely a looker. If categorized, he’d be the leader of the good-looking clique in school.
Trafalgar entered through the front door and closed it behind him, leaving François and his men outside.
I immediately stopped Lily, who was chasing Carlo the cat. Though I wanted to block Trafalgar’s view, I knew it was a pointless gesture.
“Oh? Is that the so-called wanted criminal?”
“…”
“Don’t misunderstand; I have no interest in bounty hunting. I have only one request: that you leave immediately.”
“What’s going on meow?”
Carlo jumped in front of Trafalgar.
“Who are you meow?”
“He is Lord Trafalgar, the lord of the Baron Hearst territory.”
I explained, also letting Lily hear.
“Lord Trafalgar has purchased this house and has the right to decide who stays. Unfortunately, we haven’t been granted permission to stay.”
“Why meow?”
Carlo instantly bristled, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at Trafalgar.
“You’re asking us to leave? Have you no conscience, making the adorable Anna homeless when she has a young child and a wife to support?”
“Carlo…”
My mouth twitched. I was grateful she was willing to argue for me, but her choice of words was… Let’s just say, I do have an unknown [Witch] mother, but a wife?
Strangely, Trafalgar seemed utterly indifferent to the Rothschild estate. He never really looked around and appeared uninterested in where Lily and I would stay.
“I have my own difficulties; just leave without asking too many questions. I don’t want to make this hard for you.”
Suddenly, Trafalgar’s expression changed, and he quickly drew the one-handed sword at his waist.
Heddrifa appeared behind him out of nowhere, her dagger inches away from piercing Trafalgar’s throat. Had I not intervened with my chain, she would have succeeded in a perfect assassination.
“Anna!”
Heddrifa shouted, struggling to free herself from my chain.
“Don’t be rash, Heddrifa. Trafalgar legally purchased this villa. In the Kingdom of Mikael, assassinating a noble is a serious crime.”
Especially since players can respawn. Unless it’s a perfect, untraceable assassination, the respawned player would enact a fierce revenge.
“But Anna, if you hadn’t stopped me, he wouldn’t have had a chance…”
“Idiot, we’re still here.”
Even if Trafalgar didn’t know about Heddrifa, he had seen me, Carlo, and even knew of Lily. While the assassination might have succeeded, Trafalgar, as a player, would never forget us.
Realizing her oversight, Heddrifa bit her lip and remained silent.
