Volume 1 Chapter 50
After some thought, I decided it would be prudent to consult with Hegdrifa first.
I now somewhat understand why some women prefer female taxi drivers. I must admit, if I were dealing with a male player, my alertness would increase several-fold.
Male players in virtual MMORPGs are generally more competitive and aggressive than female players, especially in combat-oriented games. That’s not to say I’ve completely let my guard down with Carlo Cat, but considering her casual player status, she might be a good candidate.
“It’s getting late. I’ll arrange a room for you. Shall we talk more in the morning?”
“Sounds good, meow~”
We have plenty of vacant rooms in the mansion, so I specifically arranged one far from Lillina to prevent Carlo Cat from discovering Lillina and Hegdrifa.
It’s no harm letting Carlo Cat stay for the night since she has nowhere else to go.
Once Carlo Cat logged out and her character entered standby mode, I returned to Lillina’s bedroom.
I would be alerted immediately if Carlo Cat made any moves. I didn’t expect that just one day would bring two additional guests to the house.
As I returned to the outside of Lillina’s bedroom, I heard Hegdrifa’s soft whispers through the door gap.
“And so, the beautiful young hero defeated the evil demon king…”
So she’s telling Lillina a story? Elf tales don’t sound much different from human fairy tales…
“Then, the beautiful young hero confessed her love to the elf queen, and they were blessed by the goddess of nature under the sacred tree. They got married and had a litter of adorable babies, living happily ever after…”
Wait, what? Are elf tales always this bizarre? Why would the young hero marry an elf queen? And why describe the babies as a ‘litter’?
I suppressed the urge to burst in and interrupt, digesting Hegdrifa’s strange elf fairy tale outside the bedroom door.
“Next, sister Rifa will tell you the story of a forbidden love between a high elf girl and a human saint…”
Stop it; this is not a fairy tale!
I pushed the door open without hesitation, and Hegdrifa made a ‘shushing’ gesture, still smiling.
Fortunately, Lillina was already asleep; otherwise, I’d be tempted to throw Hegdrifa out. Does she remember saying that elves are the purest race on Limoria?
“Who was at the door?”
“A beastman girl adventurer who claims to admire me.”
I sat on the edge of the bed and adjusted the bedding for the sleeping Lillina.
“I let her stay because I think she can help us test whether Lillina will really trigger a [Quest]. What do you think?”
“A female adventurer… In my opinion, they are more reliable than male adventurers. Those who harmed the sacred beast were male adventurers. I would certainly trust the former.”
Hegdrifa’s point of view aligns with mine. It’s not about discrimination; female players are generally less competitive in most games than male players, many even play just to accompany their boyfriends. Most female players see the game as a casual pastime.
“But we can’t let our guard down… She said she’s your fan; why don’t you test her?”
Hegdrifa made her suggestion. Carlo Cat’s claim is one-sided, and introducing her directly to Lillina does carry some risk. But since Carlo Cat doesn’t have a unique ID, it means she’s not a particularly famous adventurer, making it difficult to inquire about her reputation within the Human Kingdom.
I pondered for a moment and then nodded at Hegdrifa.
“Alright, I’ll test her tomorrow to see if she’s a genuine fan. I’ve met the people from Anna’s fan club and know that they’re… don’t look so alarmed, they’re not bad people. Anyway, I’ll figure it out.”
I paused for a moment.
“Thank you for taking care of Lillina today. I can’t manage both sides by myself.”
“No problem; your cooking really opened my eyes.”
“I’m confident in my cooking skills, but preparing food for elves was a first for me. I’m honored that you approve. Go get some rest; see you tomorrow.”
“…Go where?”
Hegdrifa looked at me, puzzled.
“Go where? To your room, next door.”
“Lillina said she wanted me to sleep with her.”
In the dim light, Hegdrifa and I locked eyes.
“I thought elves were a pure race and would be punished by the goddess of nature for sharing a bed with another race?”
“That won’t happen; Lillina is pure of heart and soul. The goddess of nature has revealed to me that I should stay, effectively giving her silent approval.”
“Then let me escort you to ask the goddess of nature her true intentions.”
“… Stay away from me; the same tricks won’t work on elves. Don’t think you can grope me again.”
What groping? That was a necessary step for [Cardiac Arrest].
Neither Hegdrifa nor I wanted to back down. Maybe I should have knocked her out right after dinner.
“Anna sister… Rifa sister…”
In her beautiful dream, Lillina mumbled fragmented words.
“I like… you both… the most…”
“…” x2
Hegdrifa and I looked at each other again, but this time, the hostility was gone.
We couldn’t disturb Lillina’s peaceful sleep; on this point, we were willing to agree.
So, we had no choice but to—
