Volume 1 Chapter 44
The misunderstanding was cleared up, and Hegdrifa didn’t plan to stay any longer. I had no need to get to know her better; after all, we were just two strangers who happened to meet on the roads of Limoria.
“Goodbye.”
“Take care.”
But to my complete surprise, Hegdrifa ran back in less than ten seconds, her face ashen.
“There are too many people outside!”
Outside? Oh, right, I forgot to tell Hegdrifa that a lot of adventurers gather in Roschild, making it inconvenient to leave.
“Are you saying you owe a lot of debts? Are they all debt collectors?”
“No.”
“Unable to repay your debts, you have no choice but to pay them back with your body… Run! There must be at least a thousand of them. You’ll get ruined.”
“I said no!”
I got a little worked up. I initially intended to quietly see Hegdrifa off, but I ended up alerting Lily.
Lily quietly opened a crack in the door and called out softly.
“Sister Anna?”
“I’m sorry, Lily, I disturbed your rest.”
Lily shook her head, and perhaps realizing Hegdrifa wasn’t a menacing woman, boldly walked out.
“Is she your friend, Sister Anna?”
“No, she’s not… Wait, why are you blushing?”
I cautiously shielded Lily behind me. Seeing Lily in her Lolita outfit, Hegdrifa suddenly made a dangerous expression as if she’d found something adorable. If I hadn’t stopped her, she might have rushed up to hug Lily.
“Ahem… Your daughter, no, your sister is quite cute. I almost didn’t recognize her in clothes.”
“Stop your vulgar talk!”
“We elves are the purest race on the continent and would never speak vulgarly.”
“Right, I recall elves are so virtuous that even for procreation between spouses, they pray for the Goddess of Nature’s approval before proceeding… but you’re nothing like that.”
Really?
Hegdrifa seemed surprised. Was she about to argue that despite her frequent strange comments, she was actually a pure-hearted good elf?
Lily’s eyes lit up.
“Eh? Big sister is an elf?”
“The Goddess of Nature has granted me the name Hegdrifa, of the noble Moon Elf lineage.”
Hegdrifa fluttered her silver hair, and her pointy ears were a prominent feature of elves, of which they are proud.
“As for my relationship with your sister… uh, I was humiliated and physically played with by her.”
“Don’t make it sound like I’m some deceitful scum!”
“She’s your friend, right, Sister Anna?”
How could Lily interpret it like that? There’s really no relationship to speak of between Hegdrifa and me.
Reluctantly, I pulled Hegdrifa aside, cornering her against the wall. However, due to my unfortunate height of 1.6 meters, Hegdrifa was slightly taller than me, making me look less imposing.
“I have limited patience; please stop.”
“There are so many adventurers outside, I can’t leave, can I?”
I replied with a sarcastic smile, “I can help you leave using space teleportation (physical).”
“That sounds dangerous.”
“If you unfortunately meet the Goddess of Nature, I will spend 0.1 seconds every year on this day to mourn you solemnly.”
“Mmm. Okay, I admit the more I think about it, the more I feel I should stay.”
Hegdrifa raised her hands and reluctantly chose to surrender.
“I think the Goddess of Nature has given me a revelation. Besides, I took a sacred beast’s remains from you, and for some reason, I feel guilty.”
“You were the one who wanted the sacred beast’s remains.”
“I know. If you were a wicked human who desecrated sacred beasts, I wouldn’t hesitate to take their remains. But now I feel like I should stay and do something. You…”
Hegdrifa lowered her voice deliberately.
“You really like that child, so you must understand the consequences if it turns out to be that kind of possibility.”
“……….”
“She has many injuries that a child shouldn’t have. What exactly happened?”
“…I don’t know.”
After saying it, I realized my tone had softened considerably.
“But I won’t abandon Lily.”
Hegdrifa looked at me with a smile, and I knew I no longer had a reason to refuse her staying.
I turned my head, resisting pointlessly, “I have to deal with the adventurers visiting every day; I don’t have time to accompany you.”
“I’ll find something to do; I won’t freeload.”
Thinking positively, at least Lily will have someone to chat with while I deal with the adventurers.
I released my hand that had cornered Hegdrifa against the wall, tacitly agreeing to let her stay temporarily. As long as she doesn’t harm Lily, I don’t mind having more voices in the house.
Children are always curious about the unknown, and Lily had seen elves before but never directly communicated with one. Perhaps for this reason, Hegdrifa quickly got along with Lily and even happily decided to help me prepare lunch.
I insisted that I, with my max-level cooking skills, should be in charge, and since Lily’s injuries haven’t fully healed, she shouldn’t overexert herself.
Having received Hegdrifa’s promise not to let Lily mess around, I could finally go meet the noisy adventurers outside with a somewhat eased mind.
