Volume 1 Chapter 41
Using the reputation of Anna’s support group, the elf girl finally shows signs of submission.
“Your name?”
“Hegdrifa.”
“Age.”
“42.”
“… Hegdrifa, Auntie?”
“Converted to your human years, I’m only 17, okay?!”
So she’s the same age as me? Judging by her behavior, it doesn’t feel like she has 25 more years of life experience than I do.
I skip meaningless questions like gender and race. The most important thing is…
“What are you doing here?”
“…”
Hegdrifa returns to her resentful expression upon hearing my question.
“You’re asking even though you already know! You should have a clue, right?”
“… So, you are an assassin?”
“Assassin? What are you talking about?”
Hegdrifa frowns slightly, seemingly not quite understanding what I’m saying.
“I came here to retrieve the remains of a sacred beast, not to be an assassin.”
Sacred beast? Remains?
I’m not entirely clueless. Among elves, there are many sub-races, and Moon Elves are just one of them. But unicorns are a sacred beast that all revere, regardless of their group.
“You mean this?”
I take out the [Unicorn’s Crystal Shoe] from my storage space.
Hegdrifa’s face fills with sorrow, almost breaking into tears.
“You’re even flaunting it in front of me… Are you a devil in human skin?”
“No, what I mean is, if you came for this, I can give it to you.”
“Huh?” Hegdrifa can hardly believe it. “Don’t think you can fool me just because I look gullible.”
So you are aware of that, huh?
“I don’t make a habit of re-gifting. But the unicorn is indeed your sacred beast. It would be right to return it to its rightful owner,” I pause, “but that’s only after I trust you. Elves hail from the distant realm of Midgard. Why are you in the Kingdom of Mikael? Tell me everything, and if I find out you’re lying…”
I press a shining dagger against Hegdrifa’s delicate cheek and stick it into the floor.
Hegdrifa’s gaze oscillates between the sharp dagger, my face, and the [Unicorn’s Crystal Shoe] beside her. After weighing her options, she chooses to speak.
“Tch… I give up. Do you know of Elf King Oberon VII?”
“Even if one hasn’t been to Midgard, nobody would be ignorant of the Elf King.”
I nonchalantly place my hand on Hegdrifa’s pulse.
“Each generation of our Elf Kings has been named Oberon after the founding emperor of Midgard. We’ve always upheld principles of peaceful coexistence. We don’t want outsiders disturbing our sacred land, and we would never be aggressors. But all that changed after Oberon VII was crowned. Midgard plunged into endless war.”
“So I’ve heard. Not long after his election, the Elf King began drastic reforms within the country.”
“Yes… Unprecedented rebellions erupted in Midgard, all of which Oberon VII suppressed. The Elder Council’s powers were also reduced. Midgard is no longer the idyllic haven it once was. Many elves who couldn’t stand the atmosphere chose to leave.”
“And you’re one of them. You came to the Kingdom of Mikael to retrieve the remains of the sacred beast. The horns of the sacred beast are popular among the nobility in Mikael, and you intend to collect them all to bring peace to Midgard.”
“Exactly,” Hegdrifa answers without hesitation. “It’s a belief that has been passed down among us elves for a thousand years. The reason we’re being punished by the goddess of nature is precisely because we couldn’t protect the sacred beast…”
I see.
I feel that since unicorns are pure and auspicious creatures, their affairs and those of the elves should be two unrelated matters. But this is a matter of elf internal beliefs, so I have no need to interject.
All I need to know is the reason why the elves came to the Kingdom of Mikael from such a distance. It seems that Hegdrifa came here tracking the [Unicorn’s Crystal Shoe], and she has nothing to do with Lily.
The reason is convincing enough, but for Lily’s safety, further confirmation is necessary.
