Volume 1 Chapter 33
I stayed by Lily’s side until the sun went down. My Companion Sleep skill is not dependent on whether I rest; it remains active as long as I am near the target of the skill.
Free from the torment of nightmares, Lily slept quite peacefully. I gently wiped the tear marks from her face. Until Lily overcomes her fear of nightmares, it’s necessary for me to stay by her side.
Rather, it’s as if Lily has taught me a lesson. I took everything for granted due to my lack of experience in taking care of children.
In the evening, Lily woke from her light sleep.
“Uh… Anna… Sister…”
“Yes, I’m here.”
Lily suddenly became much more alert. Her [Fatigue] debuff had disappeared after resting all afternoon.
“It’s already evening, Lily. So, what would you like to do? Eat first? Take a bath? Or…?”
Gurgle, gurgle…
Congratulations to Lily’s stomach for answering first.
It’s understandable. Lily only had breakfast in the morning and skipped lunch due to the shock. The [Rumbling Hunger] red debuff in her status bar is quite conspicuous.
A maid should not let her own emotions affect her work, so I try to act as usual in front of Lily. But seeing her devour the food did lift my spirits considerably, giving me more time to ponder other matters.
The daily routine is a bit messed up, but it’s okay. We can adjust it later.
Children do have smaller appetites. Lily’s status changed from [Rumbling Hunger] to [Full], and there was still quite a bit of food left.
Pitter-patter… Pitter-patter…
“Lily?”
Out of nowhere, tears started to fall from Lily’s eyes. My first reaction was, could it be that the food didn’t suit her? Though I can’t make food that glows and explodes clothes, it shouldn’t be so bad as to make a little girl cry.
“Sister Anna… Did I… cause you a lot of trouble?”
Lily tried to hold back her tears, sniffing as she spoke.
I took the small hand she was about to use to wipe her tears and handed her a handkerchief.
“Of course not, Lily is a good, obedient child.”
“But I… have nothing to give back to Sister Anna…”
“I’m not helping you for something in return, Lily. If you say that again, I’ll be upset.”
I put on a stern face. All I did was simply want to help her when I found her lying in a pool of blood in the forest.
“Li-Lily will be obedient!”
After having a full meal, Lily’s complexion improved a lot, and her face gradually turned rosy.
“Alright, I’m not angry. I appreciate your good intentions, Lily. But one person can manage everything here. You don’t have to worry. Feel free to live here as if it’s your own home.”
“My own home…?”
Lily tilted her head in confusion, and my heart skipped a beat. Did I touch on a sensitive topic?
“Is it the warm home with a mom and dad?”
“Uh…”
“I’ve never met my mom and dad, so I don’t really know what a home is. But Sister Anna is warm, and I like Sister Anna. Does that count as a home?”
“Well, I guess…?”
I stammered in response. The implication that she never met her parents suggests that she might be an orphan. Who would hurt an orphan so severely? The more I think about it, the more confused I become.
Regardless, Lily has become much more talkative compared to before, and the house no longer felt lonely with just me talking to myself.
I can probe into it when Lily’s injuries heal…
Deciding to avoid potentially sensitive topics, I quickly pulled out a few dresses that I had sewn for her while she was asleep.
“Lily, what do you think of these dresses?”
“Wow~”
Her bright blue eyes lit up. Naturally, girls are interested in pretty clothes.
Based on the attire of a noble girl, I had sewn Lily an adorable dress. Thanks to my max-level [Tailoring] skill, I could complete the job before she woke up. The only downside was that I accidentally sewed a bear pattern onto her underwear…
But Lily had no complaints, thankfully.
“These are for you, Lily. Come on, let me help you put them on…”
“No.”
“?! ”
Such plain and simple words.
My feelings at that moment were probably similar to a big brother who suddenly hears his sister say, “I don’t want my clothes washed with yours.” Life seemed meaningless.
“Sister Anna! What I mean is, I’m dirty now… and I don’t want to soil Sister Anna’s heartfelt gift…”
“…You should’ve said that earlier.”
You almost made me fall into despair.
True, while I had wiped Lily’s body down with water and a towel, she hadn’t had a proper bath. Considering she likely didn’t have time to clean up while fleeing, she must be close to reaching a girl’s maximum tolerance for hygiene issues.
“So! Sister Anna, let’s take a bath together!”
“…Eh?”
