Volume 1 Chapter 17
I’ve been… dead for over a year? Wait, is there a delay in crossing over? Or is it so crowded that we have to queue up?
“Anna seems shocked…”
“Why would Anna care about what’s going on in our world?”
In the continent of Limoria, NPCs don’t usually inquire about the real world, which is one of the few universal features the developers have added. However, there’s no rule against NPCs discussing the real world with players, but normally, unless a player brings it up, NPCs won’t show interest.
They openly display their confusion, probably because they’ve never encountered an NPC who asked about the real world before.
“Be-because I met an adventurer who mentioned the Newman family… I wanted to ask about her whereabouts.”
“You must be mistaken,” the man with the glasses responds, not dwelling on my awkward excuse.
“The daughter of the Newman family did adventure in Limoria… but she gave it up after the assassination attempt.”
“It’s understandable, given what happened.”
“Rich families have many issues we don’t know about.”
They start discussing among themselves.
The young lady stopped logging into the game?
Well, that makes sense. After an assassination attempt, who would be in the mood to play? The young lady initially chose The Eternal Pacificus for its high level of freedom, so she could pick it up and put it down whenever she wanted.
“…Have the young lady and I… become people of two separate worlds?”
A wave of unprecedented heaviness and pain floods my heart. I know that if the young lady doesn’t log back into the game, I might never see her again. How can a game NPC convince the heiress of a real-world wealthy family to specifically come to see me? It’s not like I can ask other players to do that. The Newman family would be on high alert, not letting anyone of unknown origin get close to her easily.
Moreover, what would happen even if we met?
Is it just to tell her that I’m still alive? I no longer have the ability to protect her in the real world.
“…Anna?”
“Uh? Oh, sorry, I was lost in thought…”
I take the Bacchus liquor from the man with glasses. I feel an inexplicable urge to get drunk.
But that would be a hassle for everyone in Anna’s Support Group, so I continue to sip slowly.
I try to wash away the heaviness and pressure, but the strong Bacchus liquor tastes no different from water to me.
My [Drinking] level is Lv.Max. At this maxed-out level, I have the [Never Drunk] skill, allowing me to adapt to any liquor. Alcohol is no longer my enemy; my stomach capacity is.
As a maid, my duty is not to get drunk but to help my intoxicated master to bed.
I once fantasized that I could still be by the young lady’s side in this virtual world. But now, that possibility seems almost zero.
I down the sixth cup of Bacchus liquor, and Misaka 10086 chooses to squat on the log to mitigate the alcohol’s effect.
I win this round and continue to inquire about the current situation in the real world from the man with glasses.
“Can you tell me… what’s the current situation of the Newman family’s young lady?”
“After the assassination attempt, the Newman family went all out to find the assailant. At first, everyone was paying attention, but then it all went quiet.”
“There are rumors that it was an assassin sent by a distant relative.”
“Even though they’re all family, it’s extreme to go to such lengths. Especially considering the head of the Newman family only has one daughter.”
Hearing their discussion, I start to worry about the young lady’s situation.
The Newmans have never been a family to rise through gentle means. They only have one direct heir, so it’s natural that the side branches would harbor dark thoughts.
As a servant, it’s my duty to solve problems for my master. Sometimes the master won’t say it explicitly, but I have the obligation to act on my own.
The order for the assassination didn’t come from a distant relative, but from their confidants, an “individual arbitrary act” without any higher orders. From a status standpoint, I understand this kind of thinking.
“There are many rumors, but nobody knows the truth. As for the young lady’s current situation, I heard she reconciled with her father after the incident. She’s now balancing her studies while getting involved in the family business. Our guess that the assassin was sent by a distant relative isn’t unfounded; she’s been subtly targeting a certain branch of the family ever since she got involved.”
The man with the glasses provides a general summary. Those who aren’t involved with the Newman family business would know only what’s reported in the news.
So, she’s reconciled with her father.
While I’m happy to hear that the father-daughter relationship has thawed, it seems like the young lady has chosen to compromise.
She had no interest in the family business, which was a frequent point of contention with her father. Otherwise, when she was in danger, there wouldn’t have been just me by her side.
The young lady choosing to compromise… The assassination attempt must have changed her a lot.
But with this, I can be at ease.
The young lady has returned to the Newman family, and there will be many servants around her who are no less competent than me. I know that the young lady is a sensitive person who would be saddened by the departure of a small pet for a long time. She might have been sad, but after so long, she must have returned to her usual sunny and willful self.
Please take good care of yourself, young lady…
