Chapter 22: A New Life And A Lingering Past
Two years had passed since Nari found herself in this strange, new world. What began as a terrifying and lonely experience had blossomed into a life she never expected. She had a new family now, friends who cared for her, and even a semblance of peace. Yet, in the quiet moments, a shadow of regret lingered in her heart.
She sat by the window, gazing at the vast expanse of the forest outside. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, their leaves catching the golden light of the afternoon sun. Nari's mind wandered to the family she left behind. "I hope they're doing fine without me," she whispered, her voice soft and wistful. The ache of homesickness was something she'd learned to live with, but it never fully faded.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of hurried footsteps. Turning her head, she saw Leo enter the room, his expression focused as he moved around with purpose, searching for something. He looked under the bed, behind the chairs, and even in the corner by the bookshelf.
"Top shelf," Nari said casually, a hint of amusement in her tone.
Leo stopped mid-motion, blinking at her in surprise. Then, following her suggestion, he opened the cabinet and found what he was looking for—his jacket. He grabbed it with a sheepish smile and walked over to her.
"Thanks," he said, leaning down to press a quick kiss to her forehead before hurrying out of the house.
Nari watched him go, her brow furrowing. "That's the fourth time this week," she murmured to herself. Something about Leo's behavior was off. He'd been disappearing suddenly and without much explanation, leaving her with a nagging feeling of unease.
The thought crossed her mind—what if he was seeing someone else? But almost as quickly as it came, she dismissed it. "He isn't that kind of person," she said firmly. Leo had always been honest and loyal, and she trusted him. Still, the oddity of his actions gnawed at her curiosity. "Maybe he's found a new job or something," she rationalized. But deep down, she wasn't convinced.
That night, her suspicions deepened. As the house fell silent and the moon hung high in the sky, she heard the faint sound of footsteps. Peeking through her bedroom window, she saw Leo slipping out of the house, his movements careful and deliberate, as though he didn't want to be noticed.
Her heart pounded as she made a quick decision. Grabbing her cloak, she followed him into the cool night air, keeping a safe distance. The forest loomed around her, shadows stretching in the moonlight as she trailed him. Leo stopped just behind the house, his posture tense. Nari hid behind a tree, watching him intently.
Then, it happened. A figure appeared out of thin air, as though stepping through an invisible door. The man's presence was commanding, his dark cloak billowing slightly despite the still air. There was an aura of power around him that made the hair on Nari's arms stand on end.
Her breath caught in her throat as recognition dawned. This was the demon lord's loyal servant. In the game, he was the one who scoured towns in search of people to turn into energy sources for the demon lord's insatiable hunger for power. Nari's mind raced.
"Does he want to make Leo a vessel for the demon lord?" she thought, anger flaring within her. "He better not try that, or I'll—"
Before she could finish her thought, the man's voice broke the stillness of the night.
"Young master, please come back. Your father misses you," the servant said, his tone pleading.
Nari froze, her mind reeling. "Young master?" she whispered to herself, disbelief coloring her thoughts.
