Chapter 108: Killing the Monsters

[Selene's Pov]

'You can do it, Selene. They are just monsters.'

Taking a deep breath, I stared sharply at the 2 ghouls ahead of me.

I agreed to kill both of them to get used to killing. Ray would keep watching me from the side ensuring that nothing wrong would happen.

I pointed my finger at the male before shooting a lunar beam at it. The male ghoul's head began to freeze, but it instantly moved its head to the side.

"GRRRRR!"

"ROAAAAR!"

Their sharp claws began to grow rapidly and their pure white eyes focused on me as they growled and roared.

'I can't go back now.'

With explosive force, I threw my sword directly at the male ghoul. The sword, supported by gravity, cut through the air at a fast speed.

*Clank!*

Using their claws together, the ghouls stopped the sword in the middle of air. Cracks spread across their claws, but they didn't seem to care.

Instantly, they threw it to the side and quickly rushed toward me — but that was their mistake.

The male raised its claws in the air, but before it could swing—

"Grah…!"

The sword moved in the air as it severed through the female ghoul's back, leaving a deep frozen cut.

Hearing the female's scream, the male ghoul stopped and turned its head toward the female. Seizing the opportunity, my fist connected to its stomach with explosive force, slamming it into the ground.

"Cough!"

The ghoul coughed blood on my face. Seeing the red blood and the frightened monster's expression, I hesitated.

But it was just for a brief moment.

That thing was just a monster!

With unshakable determination, I raised my frozen fist before throwing a barrage of punches at the ghoul.

Every punch was followed with a more brutal one as my sympathy and pity toward the ghoul kept fading away.

Sometimes I'd feel its bones breaking under my force, sometimes the blood would splash over my face, and sometimes its flesh would freeze and shatter with the next punch.

When my entire face was painted in red, I finally stopped, looking with trembling shoulders at the unrecognisable, motionless ghoul.

"I… I killed it…"

*BAM!*

All of a sudden, a clawed hand threw me to the side. I rolled on the ground a few times before using gravity to fix myself.

Just then, a sharp, raw scream rang through the air. As I looked at its source, my eyes widened significantly.

'Is she hugging him…?'

The female ghoul was hugging the corpse of the male one, screaming loudly as tears ran over her cheeks.

To have such emotions… Ghouls were really intelligent.

My eyes landed on my hand, covered in the frozen blood of the dead monster.

"Have I done a bad thing?" I asked myself loudly, confused by the result of my actions.

I looked beside me, a half-eaten ghoul corpse was lying lifelessly on the ground. Looking at its eyes, I saw a red line of bloody tears.

Finally, I understood Raylin's logic.

'That female ghoul is crying over the death of its partner, yet it killed another one brutally without blinking.'

I gritted my teeth. 'It thinks that it has the right to harm others, but no one has the right to harm it!'

'Monsters have emotions too, but they show them only when they are affected! If they don't care about the others, then why should I care about them!'

I bit my lips as I stood up and moved to the female demoness. I dismissed my sword, and almost instantly, it materialized in my right hand.

I stood before the ghoul, glaring at it sharply. It was focusing entirely on its partner and didn't even glance at me.

I held my sword firmly, then quickly swung it.

*Slash!*

The sharp blade cut through the ghouls flesh and bones without resistance, severing its neck and throwing the ghoul's head away.

"Haa… Haa… Haa…" I sat on the ground breathing heavily. My chest kept rising and falling as I tried to stop my racing heart.

Mentally, it was hard to kill them, to convince myself that it would be alright, but I did it!

"I knew you could do it!"

Suddenly, Raylin's voice shouted excitingly beside me. His warm hand fell on my head as it began to pat it softly.

I turned my head, focusing on his sharp dark purple eyes. They were looking at me proudly with visible happiness.

I smiled. "Treat me with something delicious, I want to change the taste of those disgusting bars!"

"Tsk, you are becoming greedy." He chuckled while taking a lemon bar and piece of clothing from his storage.

He then used it to wipe the blood on my face before handing me the bar.

He started moving away. "I'll go take those corpses. Heal yourself and rest for now."

"Hm?" I scanned my body, then noticed all the claw marks on my body.

'Oh, I didn't notice them.' I began to cast healing light over my body, feeling the flesh and skin regenerating again.

I took a bite of the lemon bar as I watched Raylin with a smile. He was kicking his raven that tried to take a corpse's arm.

Many people were calling him devil and sadist, many people hated him, and many people were scared of approaching him, especially with those scary eyes!

But I knew that he was kind from the inside. At least for the people close to him, he didn't show anything unusual.

He just had a… unique nature, but I understood it now.

His family died, not by beasts, not even demons, but by a human.

The same human that was killing other people just for fun.

Raylin was right — this type of person can be considered as only a monster. Maybe someone had a chance to kill Cecil, but they showed him mercy or hesitated.

The result?

Cecil ended up causing massacres.

I let out a sigh, 'I have to change.'

Maybe in another world, I'd not need to change, but this world contained many monsters hiding under humanoid skins.

If someone tried to hurt me, I'd have to kill them.
