Chapter 7 - First Encounter with Chloe Song
Alexander Xu halted outside the president’s office. The soundproofing of the office was exceptional; had he not possessed the “Dragon’s Command,” he wouldn’t have been able to hear the conversation inside. It was clear William Xu was on the phone, and Alexander didn’t need to guess who he was calling. Most likely, it was those who could help smooth things over.
Many calls were made by William Xu, but each response was the same: sympathetic but powerless. They were businessmen, after all; none dared to cross the Song family. Even those with some connections admitted that their influence was insufficient to sway Daniel Song’s decision.
Alexander felt a surge of emotion. His stepfather, despite never showing him much affection, was going all out to save him. This effort alone was enough for Alexander to accept him as his stepfather.
Reflecting on the past, Alexander pushed open the door and entered the president’s office.
“I said no disturbances, you…” William Xu began angrily, thinking his secretary had entered. He stopped abruptly upon seeing Alexander, rubbing his eyes in disbelief. “Alexander, is that you? Weren’t you…”
“Dad, I’m okay. Daniel Song released me,” Alexander replied with a smile, approaching William for a heartfelt hug.
For William, this gesture was monumental, stirring a whirlwind of emotions and bringing tears to his eyes. How many years had it been since they last embraced like this?
“Was it Chloe who called Commander Song?” William’s first thought was of Chloe Song. Who else but her could have influenced Daniel Song’s decision? Although Chloe initially refused to help, perhaps she had a change of heart after Alexander left.
“Chloe Song? You went to ask her for help? Why would you plead with that woman!” Alexander sighed, realizing he had returned too late.
Wiping his emotional tears, William nonchalantly replied, “If it could save you, what’s wrong with asking for her help?”
Angered at the thought of William begging Chloe, Alexander left the president’s office and headed straight to the 48th floor. He was determined to see for himself who Miss Song really was.
Upon seeing Alexander on the 48th floor, everyone acted unsurprised, as if it was expected.
Finding Chloe’s office from his memory, Alexander didn’t bother with formalities and kicked open her office door. Dealing with someone like Chloe Song didn’t warrant politeness!
Chloe, about to call her father, frowned at the disturbance. Who would dare kick her office door? Her surprise turned to shock upon seeing Alexander. She had been about to call her father about him. How could he be here, unharmed, given her father’s temperament?
As Chloe observed Alexander, he too was scrutinizing her.
For a moment, Alexander was mesmerized. He had seen many beauties, but few matched Chloe’s allure. No wonder his predecessor had harbored such intentions towards her. Even he was stunned by her beauty, let alone a playboy.
Her slightly furrowed willow brows and the indifferent look on her face gave her an ethereal, fairy-like aura. Her bright eyes sparkled like stars at night. Her slim waist, accentuated by a flowing skirt, resembled a standing lotus flower.
Her voluptuous figure only added to her charm. It was no surprise she was so proud, with both beauty and competence.
Regaining his composure, Alexander sat across Chloe, casually placing his feet on her desk, and sneered, “Miss Song, disappointed I wasn’t executed by Daniel Song?”
Chloe glanced disdainfully at the unruly Alexander and replied indifferently, “I was indeed surprised by your appearance. Since you are fine, I don’t have to call my dad again! Mr. Xu, you can leave if you have nothing to do. Stop disturbing my work!”
Alexander felt deeply annoyed by her dismissive attitude.
“Chloe Song, as the vice president of the Prosperous World Group, I am informing you that you’re fired,” he said seriously.
Not out of revenge, but because he genuinely felt she didn’t belong in the Prosperous World Group. Despite her beauty and competence, her presence was inappropriate, and his father, the president, likely didn’t dare to offend her.
Chloe looked at him incredulously, then returned to her documents, laughing coldly, “Mr. Xu, you seem mistaken. You don’t have the authority to fire me.”
“Because you’re Daniel Song’s daughter and Matthew Song’s granddaughter?” Alexander scoffed.
“Not about who I am, but who are you?” Chloe retorted with a contemptuous smile, leaning back in her chair. “You seem to forget, your position as vice president is merely a nominal one without any real power. And in my case, only the president can fire me.”
Her expression clearly conveyed, “You’re not qualified to fire me.”
Alexander paused, realizing he lacked such authority.
“Are you insane? I almost assaulted you, and yet you still want to stay in the Prosperous World Group? Aren’t you afraid I might try again?” Alexander looked at her helplessly. Anyone else would have resigned by now, but Chloe seemed to have no intention of leaving.
“I’ll leave when I want, and no one can make me stay. If I choose to stay, no one can force me to leave. If you dare harbor any ill intentions again, try me!” Chloe challenged, raising an eyebrow calmly.
She joined the Prosperous World Group to avoid the politics of large family clans, where young women often become tools for arranged marriages.
At least for now, she was content with the company, except for the despicable Alexander.
“Fine, have it your way,” Alexander stood up and walked towards the door. He paused, leaned against the bent door, and said with a wicked smile, “Tell your bodyguards, if I see them again, I’ll make sure to break their legs.”
Regardless of Alexander’s past transgressions, the previous Alexander had been ‘killed’. If he ever encountered those bodyguards again, he would teach them a lesson, avenging his body’s former occupant.
After Alexander left, Chloe was lost in thought, dismissing his threat. She viewed Alexander as nothing more than a decorative pillow, all looks but no substance. Confronting her father’s bodyguards would be suicidal. She knew that Alexander, despite his flaws, wasn’t foolish enough to seek his own death.
She was surprised that Alexander didn’t make any lewd comments or give her lustful looks during their brief interaction. According to his playboy nature, he would have typically expressed such disgusting desires by now.
Moreover, how did he escape the military region? Picking up her phone, Chloe finally called her father. “Dad…”
“Chloe? You’re not calling to plead for that scoundrel, are you? Don’t worry, I’ve already released him,” her father’s voice came through, clearly begrudgingly.
“You personally released him?” Chloe was curious. She knew her father’s temper; not surrounding the Xu family with troops was already merciful. Why release Alexander?
The mention of Alexander brought to Daniel’s mind the latter’s infuriating smile, making him irate. “You think I wanted to? It was your grandfather who personally called and ordered his release. Also, don’t stay at the Prosperous World Group any longer. That scoundrel is not someone to be taken lightly!”
His primary concern was Chloe’s safety. Alexander’s strength, evident from breaking handcuffs, indicated he was a dangerous man. Daniel wondered why such a formidable person had nearly been killed by bodyguards. Pretending to be weak was one thing, but risking one’s life was another matter.
“Alright, I’ll consider it,” Chloe hung up, shocked. Her grandfather intervened? The Xu family, despite its wealth, couldn’t possibly influence her grandfather. What was really going on?
For the first time, Chloe felt a hint of curiosity towards Alexander.
