Chapter 144 Slime, Holy Light and I Are Already Married (10.4k, 15/76)
[Location: Newman Domain - Dungeon "Gluttonous Slime Nest"]
"Where do these monsters come from? Don't they have any fear of death at all?"
Standing on a bare rock, a Gluttonous Slime the size of a wolfhound stepped back in pain, a huge gash in its round body like a bitten chunk from an apple.
Looking to flee in panic, it was immediately encircled by two approaching professionals.
Their movements were swift, without a moment's hesitation. The leader, upon spotting it, swung his Nail Head Hammer, terrifying the slime into a frenzied escape. Read exclusive content at empire
The Gluttonous Slime couldn't understand why, though previously not many humans possessed Extraordinary Powers and were within a manageable range for them, now almost every human that came here had such powers.
These humans were as numerous as locusts!
Clearly, the Gluttonous Slime was unaware of the changes in the outside world.
Communication between the Dungeon and the outside was limited, and even though the creatures of the Dungeon were granted the ability to "understand languages" by the world's will, there was little opportunity for interaction between the two sides.
Not to mention, Gluttonous Slimes are notoriously difficult to communicate with.
Though they possess greater strength, full emotions, and rational thought compared to their common relatives, the standard slimes butchered by children, they are also much more greedy.
True to their name, Gluttony...
They proactively devour anything that can strengthen their bodies, including the adventurers themselves, whom they hunt.
It could be said that, unlike the common slimes that feed on ordinary insects and birds, Gluttonous Slimes prefer to see creatures with greater strength as their own personal reserves of food.
This irreconcilable conflict led those in Newman Domain to abandon the idea of negotiating with them.
While Newman Domain itself was intent on eradicating these Gluttonous Slimes, these creatures reproduced at an alarmingly fast rate.
As a result, even with decent teams of professionals, Newman Ridge was unable to clear out the Dungeon.
But now, they had encountered their true nemesis, or rather, the nemesis of monsters!
"Go! Go! Go! MT, get on top, don't let that thing get away!"
Before the Gluttonous Slime could think too much, it was knocked down by a human who suddenly emerged with a Wooden Shield, pinning it to the ground with the massive shield, rendering it unable to move.
"Demacia!"
The human shouted incomprehensible words, using his hefty weight as a means to restrain the angry Gluttonous Slime attempting to flee.
Suddenly, the slime, originally the size of a wolfhound, swelled as a jet of water, like a torrent, shot out from the indentation where it had collapsed.
The human, seeing this, attempted to hide behind his sizable Wooden Shield. As the shield couldn't cover his entire body, the exposed parts steamed as the water jet hit them, causing him to cry out in pain.
Slimes are naturally adept at dissolving wood and stone, and the liquid they concentrate within their jelly-like bodies is quite corrosive.
Compared to the water cannon that could at most knock people down, the strong acid that constituted the water cannon was the more dangerous element.
The Gluttonous Slime racked its brain but couldn't understand why humans from "the other side of the door" had suddenly become so numerous and were continuously launching attacks on its nest.
The number of humans that had emerged recently was nearly thirty times what it had been before, which was too many, and now its nestmates in the Gluttonous Slime Nest were starting to feel overwhelmed.
Damn it!
To it, the land on the other side of the door was mostly barren, like the wastelands surrounding its nest, with just a few more humans stationed near the door.
While their kin couldn't break out, those humans also faced difficulties infiltrating their nest.
Who would have thought they would be pushed into such a dire situation?
Now, none of that matters.
Perhaps humans are like the cockroaches in the nest?
It wasn't that they were unnoticed, but that they had been proliferating in dark corners.
When they emerged, it meant they could no longer survive in those shadows.
"You need to pay the price!"
It considered itself an intelligent slime, not like its Gluttonous Slime brethren who only thought about fighting, brawling, and plundering resources all day.
Sometimes it felt that its kin were like insatiable locusts, wanting to expand their territory whether it was saturated or not.
Didn't my kin realize that attempting violent expansion against strong enemies would only result in a harsh beating, or even death on the spot?
Of course, that's if they are strong enemies.
At least in the eyes of this Gluttonous Slime, the group of humans it faced was not a significant threat; thus, a mouth-like indent appeared on its round aqua-blue body, and a voice emerged:
