Regression of a Star

Chapter 10: Shadows of the Spotlight

The Warning

Haruki woke up to a strange sense of unease. His life had begun to stabilize as he delved deeper into the world of independent cinema, but the challenges of breaking away from his past continued to haunt him. Every step forward seemed to bring new complications, as if his old life refused to let him go.

After finishing a meeting with the director of his current project, Haruki returned home, looking forward to a quiet evening of preparation for his upcoming scenes. But as he approached the door to his apartment, he noticed something unusual.

A folded note lay on the floor just inside the threshold. Picking it up, Haruki unfolded the paper, revealing a chilling message:

"Don't trust everyone who smiles at you. Watch your back."

His breath caught, and his heart began to race. Someone knew about him—about his past, his choices, his struggles. But who? And what did they want? Haruki's mind swirled with possibilities, each more unsettling than the last.

He glanced around his modest apartment, the quiet hum of the city beyond the window suddenly feeling distant and cold. The note was a stark reminder that fame, even faded fame, had its dangers. Haruki clenched his fists, a surge of determination replacing the fear.

I've come too far to be intimidated now.

A Familiar Face

The next morning, Haruki decided to confront his unease head-on. He attended the set of his latest project, pouring himself into the work. His scenes required emotional vulnerability, and he used the lingering tension from the note to enhance his performance. The director was thrilled, praising Haruki's ability to bring raw emotion to the screen.

But even amidst the praise, Haruki couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. During a break, he scanned the crowd of extras, crew members, and curious onlookers gathered near the set. Everyone seemed normal—too normal.

That's when he spotted him. A man standing in the shadows just beyond the edge of the set. His face was partially obscured by a hat, but something about his posture seemed familiar. Haruki's eyes narrowed, his mind racing through memories of his past life.

The man noticed Haruki's gaze and disappeared into the crowd before he could react.

An Unwanted Reunion

Later that evening, as Haruki walked home, he couldn't shake the image of the man from his mind. Who was he? Was it connected to the note?

When he arrived at his apartment, he found someone waiting for him. Kaito, his old agent, leaned casually against the wall by his door, a sly grin on his face.

"Haruki," Kaito drawled. "You've been avoiding me."

Haruki tensed, his instincts screaming that this wasn't a coincidence. "I told you, Kaito. I'm not interested in the kind of roles you offer anymore."

"Relax," Kaito replied, holding up his hands as if to show he meant no harm. "I'm not here to pitch you anything. Just wanted to check in. See how you're doing."

Haruki didn't believe him for a second. Kaito never did anything without a motive. "I'm doing fine," he said curtly. "What do you really want?"

Kaito's grin widened. "Just a friendly warning. This industry has a long memory. People don't forget, Haruki. And some... well, they might not forgive."

With that cryptic remark, Kaito turned and walked away, leaving Haruki standing in the hallway, the weight of his words settling heavily on his shoulders.

The Resolve

Haruki sat in his apartment that night, staring at the note on his desk. The message, the man on set, and Kaito's sudden appearance—everything pointed to one conclusion. Someone was trying to rattle him, to push him back into the life he had worked so hard to leave behind.

But Haruki wasn't the same man he had been before. He had faced rejection, failure, and the emptiness of hollow success. He had found something real, something meaningful, in his work and in himself.

Clenching his fists, Haruki made a silent vow.

Whoever is trying to pull me back into the shadows, they'll have to try harder. I'm not running, and I'm not giving up.

As he prepared for bed, Haruki's phone buzzed with a new message. It was from an unknown number:

"See you soon."

The words sent a shiver down his spine, but his resolve only grew stronger. Whatever lay ahead, Haruki was ready to face it.
