Chapter 92: If I Had A Chance
Eugene finds himself in the garden, enjoying a tranquil tea time, when a servant approaches him, delivering a letter addressed to him.
Recognizing the sender as his brother, Euric, Eugene promptly opens the letter and peruses its contents.
The message reveals that yesterday, Euric and Timber had a conversation about a marriage alliance, and Timber agreed to it. The engagement is set to take place after the cede ceremony, followed by the wedding a week later. At first glance, it appears to be a hasty marriage, but whether it is based on love or convenience remains uncertain.
Eugene feels content with the news.
It appears Timber is anxious about his reaction, unaware that he had discussed the matter with his brother beforehand. Eugene finds it endearing.
He chuckles softly.
No matter, as long as the emperor issues a decree, the Rozans will have no authority to compel Timber's return. Having avoided any confrontation, Eugene successfully liberates Timber from the clutches of Klius. Now, Timber holds the reins of his own destiny, and it's entirely up to him how he chooses to lead his life after marrying his brother.
"Fetch me a pen and paper."
The maidservant dutifully bowed her head and withdrew.
Upon her return, they handed over the requested items to the young master and discreetly stepped back, granting him privacy.
Eugene proceeded to compose two letters—one addressed to the emperor and the other to his brother.
In these letters, he stated that Timber Rozans would be marrying into their household and sought the emperor's support for this union. He requested the emperor to issue a decree to the Rozan's family, prompting them to prepare a dowry as a form of assistance. This dowry would serve as Timber's financial support, enabling him to establish his own possessions and secure his [Timber] future.
"Come, take this letter and deliver it to the palace and the Shradinza Household."
The maidservant stepped forward, bowing respectfully as she extended her hands to receive the letter. "Understood."
Eugene took a leisurely sip of his tea, observing the maidservant as she walked away with the letters.
He then shifted his gaze and began to hum a tune.
The weather today was delightful, perfect for a leisurely stroll, but laziness had taken hold of him, keeping him comfortably stationed in the gazebo. There, he passed his time reading while savoring the beauty of the surrounding scenery. The conversation from yesterday had little impact on his mood; if anything, it had brightened his spirits.
Life was already riddled with numerous problems, and he was determined not to burden himself further.
Today, all he desired was a serene day without any interruptions. Luckily, Kaizer's excessive paperwork kept others at bay, sparing him from any unnecessary irritations for the time being.
Khalil was picked up by his parents from the Catharis dukedom.
While strolling about after his swordsmanship practice, he caught sight of his sister-in-law in the gazebo. Acting impulsively, he rushed over, calling out and waving his hand with a radiant smile, asking, "Are you alone, sister-in-law?"
Eugene arched an eyebrow and gazed at Khalil.
"Have a seat. Have you just completed your swordsmanship practice?"
Khalil nodded and took a seat.
Observing that his sister-in-law was engrossed in a book, he suddenly recalled an incident at the academy and remarked.
"Sister-in-law, why did you stop attending the academy? I saw yours and my brother's records, and they're astounding. You both are immensely popular, especially after the engagement. People kept approaching me, but thankfully, Clarence and Cadmus rescued me from being besieged!"
Eugene halted in surprise upon hearing a familiar name and couldn't resist asking, "You befriended Clarence and Cadmus?"
"Ah?" Khalil tilted his head, responding, "Yes, they are excellent. Cadmus currently holds the second rank in the military department, while Clarence is ranked third. The three of us always stick together, as the instructors often appoint us to lead our classmates in various activities."
It had been quite a while since Eugene last saw Clarence, and curiosity arose within him. "How did you become friends with them?"
"Well, when I first entered the academy, they challenged me to a spar. I suppose they wanted to test me, perhaps because I seemed frail compared to my brother's prestigious image."
As a rumored illegitimate son, Khalil felt the weight of hostile gazes upon entering the academy. However, no one dared to confront him directly, for even as an illegitimate child, he had gained entry into the grand dukedom, which was a clear acknowledgment of his existence by the grand duke. Despite their disdain, they refrained from bullying someone with such a prestigious background, even if tainted by "impure" blood. Hence, their discussions about Khalil remained confined to whispers and comparisons with Kaizer.
Initially, Clarence and Cadmus kept their distance, but during practice sessions, as they assessed Khalil's abilities, they realized that beneath his gentle appearance, he possessed remarkable talent and strength.
It was Cadmus who first approached Khalil, challenging him to a duel, and Clarence soon joined in.
After several bouts, during which Khalil emerged victorious, they finally acknowledged him not merely for being a Karsten but for his undeniable talent.
In the end, the three forged a strong friendship, spending their time together practicing and honing their skills. Occasionally, Kaizer and Eugene became the subjects of conversation. Unaware of Eugene's connection with the two, Khalil shared his observations and even disclosed Eugene and his brother's relationship status.
To Khalil, it seemed natural for Clarence and Cadmus to inquire about Eugene, as his brother and sister-in-law become renowned figures after the war of Nacos. In Khalil's eyes, his friends, like many others, admired his brother and sister-in-law.
"So, the three of you are now the backbone of the military department?"
Khalil patted his chest proudly and said, "Absolutely! I carry the legacy of my brother with pride!"
Eugene's lips twitched slightly.
"Well, could you enlighten me on the specific questions they asked about me?"
Khalil nodded and reached for some cookies.
"Clarence was simply inquiring about your well-being and how my brother treats you. On the other hand, Cadmus seemed curious about what you're up to since you left the academy. He also asked about your personality and, interestingly enough, about your marriage."
Upon hearing the last word, Eugene couldn't help but cough.
Why would Cadmus be asking about his marriage? Was he planning to attend the wedding?
Khalil and Eugene continue to converse.
When it's time for dinner, Kaizer personally fetches Eugene from the garden and glares at his little brother. Khalil didn't know when did he offend his brother and just scratch his head, bidding him goodbye as he run towards the annex palace to eat dinner with his mother.
Kaizer's expression didn't ease and said, "Don't come near him."
Eugene just rolled his eyes and hug Kaizer's arm replying, "The past doesn't bother me anymore, why are you so affected? It's not like your brother will harm me, disregarding you."
"I can't be at ease. He contributed to your death five times."
Eugene pinched Kaizer's waist and said, "It's not much considering how many times you kill me."
Kaizer purse his lips and hugged Eugene like a puppy.
"I'm wrong~"
The grand dining hall, adorned with rich tapestries and intricate woodwork, exudes an air of refined charm. The long, polished dining table is set with fine silverware, and sparkling crystal glasses, all meticulously chosen to create an atmosphere of understated elegance.
The servants dutifully serve the meal and stood aside with lowered heads. Kaizer didn't sit on the head seat but grabbed the chair beside Eugene. The two find themselves immersed in a noble meal that embodies the epitome of elegance and culinary artistry.
The servants peek at the two couples and couldn't help but get amazed.
Eugene possesses an aura of sophistication and grace, his silver hair lending him an air of wisdom and distinction while Kaizer, is the embodiment of strength and gentleness, with a magnetic presence that draws people towards him.
The two only look like this with each other but when faced with other people, their coldness could almost freeze those who don't suit their liking.
"When will the cede ceremony take place?"
"In three days. It will be held in the castle. It cannot be moved up as the Marquis and Duke require permission from the court to leave prison."
"Will it be a lengthy procedure?"
"No, it's a swift process. Once they sign the necessary documents, they will be immediately escorted out of the empire, preventing them from approaching any of you."
Eugene let out a sigh of relief.
He truly didn't want his parents to come near Eunice. It was best if Eunice never saw them again so she could eventually forget about them. As for Eullian, he was still forbidden from leaving the Vena Church until he was officially canonized.
Kaizer wipe Eugene's mouth and said softly, "Don't worry. I'm sure your brothers will take measures upon meeting them."
The remaining part of the dining experience involved Kaizer tending to Eugene's needs, feeding him and serving dishes that suited his taste.
Once dinner is over, Eugene heads to the library, while Kaizer returns to the office.
Eugene developed a deep love for reading and spent most of his day engrossed in books. At dawn, he entered Kaizer's office, plopped down on the couch, and engaged in conversation with him to stave off boredom. Later, they had dinner together and discussed military affairs.
With Raphael no longer on Eugene's side, Kaizer accompanies him back to his room and assists him with taking a bath. Kaizer adamantly refuses to allow servants near his beloved, and anyone associating with Eugene will undergo background checks. The head butler's warning leaves the servants trembling, causing them to avoid the young master.
Kaizer rolled up his sleeve and crouched down.
The warm water enveloped Eugene's body, offering a comforting embrace.
Kaizer took a soft sponge and gently cleansed Eugene's back and shoulders, using a fragrant soap that produced a luxurious lather. With the warmth of the water and Kaizer's skilled touch, the tensions of the day melted away, allowing Eugene to fully embrace the tranquility of the moment.
The flickering candlelight created a serene ambiance, while the scent of lavender permeated the air, contributing to an atmosphere of serenity and indulgence. Ever attentive, Kaizer ensured the water remained warm and refreshing throughout the bath.
Once Eugene had thoroughly enjoyed his bath, Kaizer draped him in a plush robe, which had been warmed on a heated towel rack. As they made their way back to the private chambers, Kaizer presented a selection of fresh clothes for Eugene to choose from.
"Anything comfortable will do."
Kaizer opted for a simple yet soft nightwear and helped Eugene get dressed.
Yawning, Eugene pulled Kaizer close, wrapping his arms around his lover's neck and whispered, "Are you going back to work? I don't want to sleep alone; I want you to stay with me."
Kaizer's heart melted.
Eugene rarely acted so affectionate, but today, for some reason, he was being incredibly sweet and adorable, making Kaizer adore his lover even more.
Kaizer settled on the couch, cradling Eugene gently, and inquired with a soft tone, "What's wrong?" He felt distressed upon seeing Eugene's exhausted expression, wondering what kind of activity had worn him out so much.
Eugene hummed and nestled his face on Kaizer's shoulder.
"It's nothing. I just feel empty all of a sudden."
Kaizer held Eugene tightly, reassuring him, "Alright, I'll stay with you. Do you want to talk about it? Let's have a conversation until you feel sleepy."
"Hmmm."
Kaizer grabbed a small towel and began to dry Eugene's damp hair.
"Khalil shared something interesting with me."
"What is it?"
"He mentioned that we've become quite popular in the academy, and people would constantly pester him to get news about us." Eugene chuckled, "Now, I'm not sure if I should feel relieved for dropping out or not, because I can only imagine the chaos if we were still attending the academy."
Kaizer pondered the thought and couldn't help but feel relieved that Eugene had chosen to drop out.
He's afraid he can't bear others' coveting eyes and do something he's been restraining himself to do.
Kaizer responded, "There's nothing much for us in the academy, so leaving wasn't a bad decision."
"You're right," Eugene agreed, taking hold of Kaizer's hand and playfully toying with his fingers. Then, he asked out of nowhere, "If we were given a chance to start over, would you wash away all your sins and make amends for every bad deed you've committed, just so you can feel worthy of being with me?"
Kaizer's eyes darkened with emotion.
"If such an opportunity arose, I would do everything in my power to become a man deserving of you."
Eugene smiled sadly.
"Do you regret hurting me?"
Kaizer leaned in, gently kissing Eugene's forehead, his eyes turning red with tears.
"There isn't a night that goes by without me seeing my hands stained with the blood of the crimes I committed recklessly. Every time I reflect on my past, I can't help but compare it to the life I have now with you in Artha, and I realize how much time I've lost and wasted. For the first time in my life, I feel genuine remorse, not just for the actions but also because I never truly understood what your presence meant to me."
Kaizer closed his eyes.
"Eugene, all I want now is to be with you," he confessed earnestly.
