rebuilding in walking dead

Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Shelter

  Georgia Emergency Shelters.

"I'm Professor Amlin from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, and I'm here to rescue you."

"If there is anyone else, please answer me."

As the call for help came from the loudspeaker, the shelter, which had been somewhat dead silent, suddenly became restless.

The area of this shelter is not large, about 1,000 square meters. The front hall is about 700 square meters, where sofas and beds are placed. There is a separate toilet and bathroom, which is a rest space. The back hall is about 300 square meters, which is a combination of a dining room and kitchen, with only some tables, chairs and kitchen utensils. The two halls are separated by a sturdy bulletproof glass door.

In the front hall, more than 100 rotting zombies heard the sound coming from the door. They all turned their heads and stared at a huge display screen on the door. They looked at the figure in a suit and tie on the screen, and began to roar and slowly moved their bodies towards him.

In the back hall of the shelter, more than 70 humans with haggard faces and depressed spirits also heard the sound coming from the display screen.

The twenty or so people near the glass door couldn't help but be shocked, and a glimmer of hope appeared in their dim eyes.

The leader among these people was an elderly gentleman in his 50s. He suppressed the throbbing in his heart, took out a bottle of white asthma spray from his dirty suit pocket, and sprayed it into his mouth a few times.

After taking a few deep breaths, the old gentleman turned to the young people around him and said:

"Classmates, there is not much food left in the warehouse. This may be our only chance to escape. If we can't escape, everyone will be trapped here and die."

  "I have a plan."

The elderly gentleman pointed at the zombies in the front hall and said after a slight pause:

"These monsters are extremely sensitive to sound, and their eyes seem to pick up light as well."

"While they are attracted by the sound on the display screen at the gate, you turn off the power in the front hall. I will sneak out with a blanket, cover myself, and hide in the corner."

He stretched out his aged arm, pointed at the bulletproof glass door separating the front and back halls, and continued:

"After I hide, go bang on the bulletproof glass, shout loudly, make noise, and attract these monsters over."

"I will take this opportunity to sneak over and press the red button next to the gate. That's the button that opens the shelter door."

As he said this, he looked with his already somewhat cloudy eyes at the strong and brave students who followed him, unwilling to give up hope, and his voice was filled with a hint of carefreeness.

"It would be best if the rescuers outside could handle so many monsters."

"If they can't deal with these monsters, then opening the door to the shelter will give you a chance."

"You can continue to wait until something happens outside, until something leads all the zombies here away, and then escape. As for whether you will live or die in the future, we can only pray for God's mercy."

As soon as he finished talking about his plan, his arms were hugged by graduate students on both sides. A brother and sister named Peggy and Hillman stopped him. Sister Peggy said:

  "Professor Jacob, let me go."

"You are old and your body is no longer in good condition. Have you forgotten that I was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash in the first half of the year? If it were me, I would definitely be able to avoid the attacks of those monsters."

The girl's brother, Hillman, shook his head firmly and said, "Sister, let me go. This kind of thing should be done by men. I am the main player of the school football team, so there will be no problem."

Many other graduate students also joined in the argument, looking as if they should take the risk themselves, but their arguments were completely unconvincing and their eyes were filled with hesitation and fear.

Professor Jacob first smiled with relief, then shook his head firmly and said:

"It's precisely because I'm old that even if I go out, I may not be able to adapt to life outside."

"That's why I want to leave this opportunity to you. You are young and excellent, and you all deserve a brighter future."

"My family has all passed away. I have nothing to worry about anymore. Just let me go."

Seeing that the old professor was determined to leave, Peggy winked at her brother.

Hillman understood what he meant and quietly raised his right hand and hit the old professor hard on the neck. The old professor was so hit that his eyes rolled back and he fainted. As a top student in the medical department, he had already studied this method of knocking people out.

Seeing her brother knock out Professor Jacob, Peggy snorted and looked with contempt at the fifty or so people who were huddled together in another corner of the back hall, as if they didn't care about anything and had turned into clay sculptures. She muttered "coward" under her breath.

She sat back in her circle and said to the other students:

"Just follow Professor Jacob's plan. I'll go open the door to the shelter, and you guys make some noise here to attract the zombies' attention."

  "is that OK?"

Seeing a girl taking the initiative to undertake the most dangerous task, many male students showed ashamed expressions on their faces, but they hesitated and dared not speak up to take the risk for her. They all agreed to support her inside.

Peggy snorted again and stopped her brother Hillman from arguing with her with a stern look. She took out a blanket from a corner of the back hall, walked to the bulletproof door, pointed at the electric switch on the wall, and winked at her brother.

  Snap!

All the lights in the front hall dimmed instantly, leaving only the sound and pictures still playing on the display screen at the door. The zombies were attracted by the sound and light and had huddled together at the door.

Peggy quietly opened the bulletproof door, huddled up and covered herself with a blanket, then half-bent and half-crouched as she crawled out through the crack of the door.

As soon as she walked out of the door, the strong stench of death could not wait to get into the girl's nose, causing Peggy's already strong courage to suddenly shrink. She desperately suppressed the urge to escape back to the back hall, and forced herself to control her hands and feet, crawling little by little to a corner farthest away from the zombies.

Huddled in the corner, Peggy wrapped herself in a blanket, leaving only her eyes exposed, and observed the movements of the zombies with the help of the light coming through the glass window.

  Bang! Bang! Bang!

  Bang! Bang! Bang!

Accompanied by the sound of people cursing and knocking on glass doors and windows, Hillman and his companions banged on the bulletproof glass, creating a lot of noise at the junction of the front and back halls.

This "human" voice seemed to attract the zombies' attention more than the dull broadcast sound.

Soon, more than 100 zombies surrounding the gate began to turn around and walked towards the glass doors and windows of the back hall.

Peggy took this opportunity to hide in the corner, without making any noise, and moved towards the door little by little.

Slowly, she moved closer and closer, passed the group of zombies and came to the gate.

Unfortunately, the girl didn't know that zombies don't just search for enemies through sound, smell is also an important basis for them to search for enemies.

The few zombies at the end of the group suddenly seemed to realize something, turned around, and started moving towards the gate again.

Peggy also noticed this. Seeing several zombies walking towards her, she no longer cared about hiding. She stood up and pressed hard on the red button on the wall.

  Tick! Tick! Tick!

Along with the sharp alarm, the steel gate of the shelter began to move slowly.

But unlike what Peggy had imagined, the door opened very slowly, and it was impossible to open it to a position that allowed humans to enter and exit before the zombies surrounded her.

When the girl realized this, her heart began to beat violently. When she thought about what would happen if she was surrounded by zombies, her legs began to unconsciously become weak.

Am I going to die here?
