Reborn With The Milf "Harem" System

Chapter 59: Rooftop Whispers(Part 7): Hunt the source.......II

Renji led the way, every step precise, calculated. Behind him followed Rika, her hand clutching the hem of his jacket like a lifeline. Reina moved with controlled calm, flashlight in one hand, the other tucked near her coat pocket where Renji suspected she carried something sharp and hidden. Mayumi brought up the rear, her athletic frame tense, eyes flicking over every shadow like a hawk....

The System whispered in Renji's mind.

[Quest Active: Unmask the Anomaly.]

[Target Location: Sub-level Records Archive.]

[Warning: Presence Detected. Renji! Be careful]

Renji's jaw tightened. "She's here."

Rika's grip tightened instinctively, her breathing quickening. "I can feel it too. That… heaviness."

They descended into the sub-level, a part of the school most students didn't even know existed. Dust clung to the walls, air heavy with the musk of old paper and mildew. Shelves of forgotten records stretched into the dark, folders stacked high with decades of secrets.

Reina swept her light across the rows. "This is where they store old files, disciplinary reports, staff evaluations, even student deaths. The stuff they don't want floating around."

"Perfect," Renji muttered. His soldier's instincts screamed louder the deeper they went. This wasn't just a storage room. It felt like a tomb.

Rika shivered beside him. "It's colder down here…"

Mayumi kicked a pebble out of her way, her voice sharp to mask her unease. "Then let's get what we came for and get out."

They split slightly, searching. Reina scanned filing cabinets, muttering dates under her breath. Mayumi yanked open drawers, dust scattering into the air. Rika hovered near Renji, unable to step too far from him.

Then..

Rika froze. "Renji… over here."

Her hand hovered above a file box labeled CLASS 2-B – 10 YEARS AGO. Unlike the others, it wasn't covered in dust. The lid looked as though it had been touched recently.

Renji's gut twisted. This is it.

He opened the box carefully. Inside were photos, attendance sheets, disciplinary slips. But at the very bottom lay something different...a newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

"Second-Year Student Found Dead in Rooftop Fall – Suspected Suicide."

Shit

Fucking shit

Rika's breath hitched as she saw the grainy photo of the girl. Same uniform. Same hair. Same smile.

The devil had been unmasked!

Her knees buckled. Renji caught her before she hit the floor, the clipping trembling in her hands.

"It's her…" Rika whispered, voice breaking.

"Renji, that's the girl!"

Reina leaned in, face grim. "Name: Hoshino Saki. Sixteen. Cause of death: ruled as suicide. But there's no follow-up investigation."

Mayumi scowled. "Convenient. A kid dies here and they just sweep it under the rug?"

Renji's mind raced. A spirit bound to the school. A girl who died violently, abandoned by the system meant to protect her. And now, ten years later, she had chosen Rika.

The System pulsed again.

[Data Acquired: Identity – Hoshino Saki.]

[Threat Level: Unknown.]

[Warning: Manifestation Imminent.]

Stay Alert!!!!

The air shifted.

Every light flickered. Paper rustled from shelves though no wind blew. And from the corner of the archive, a soft giggle echoed.

Rika's blood ran cold. "She's here…"

The sound grew louder, bouncing through the shelves. Then...footsteps. Bare feet slapping against the concrete floor. Slow. Deliberate.

Renji pulled Rika behind him, muscles coiled. Reina raised her flashlight, Mayumi dropped into a fighter's stance.

From the shadows, she emerged.

The same girl from the rooftop, Hoshino Saki. Her smile stretched unnaturally wide in the dim glow, eyes hollow black voids that reflected nothing. The air warped around her, heatless, suffocating.

"Found me," she whispered, voice echoing like it came from everywhere at once. "But she still belongs to me."

Her eyes locked onto Rika.

And the room dropped ten degrees.

The archive swallowed the light.

Bulbs flickered until only Reina's flashlight cut through the dark. Its beam shook faintly, not from her hand, but from the air itself, charged, heavy, pressing down like a storm cloud about to burst.

You can't even classify it as a storm...It was a freaking Ghost!

Hoshino Saki stood at the far end of the aisle, her smile carved too wide, her body unnaturally still. Only her hair moved, strands lifting as though underwater.

"Rika…" The voice slithered through the room, not spoken but breathed into their skulls. "You wear my life. My love. It's mine…"

Rika staggered back, shaking her head violently. "N-no… I don't even know you!"

The girl's smile sharpened, eyes glinting with hunger. "You don't need to. You'll remember when you fall."

The temperature plunged. Frost crackled along the filing cabinets, breath visible in the air. Papers ripped from shelves, swirling into a storm.

Renji shoved Rika behind him. His instincts screamed to strike, but his hands clenched uselessly, bullets and blades meant nothing here.

Then use what you do have.

[System Alert: Emotional Sync Triggered.]

[Bond Target: Rika.]

[Passive Skill Activated – Anchor of Devotion.]

Effect: Stabilizes partner's fear. Reduces hostile influence by 30%.

"What? Something apart from lust????"

Warmth pulsed from Renji into Rika, her trembling slowing, her lungs drawing steadier breaths. Her wide eyes blinked, grounding herself in his presence.

"Stay with me," Renji murmured, his voice sharp but steady. "She's not taking you."

Reina moved beside him, her flashlight trained on the apparition. "Spirits like this… they're bound by unfinished desires. She doesn't want peace. She wants possession."

Mayumi clenched her fists, frustration simmering. "Then how the hell do we fight her?"

Saki tilted her head, the sound of bones creaking too loud in the silence. "You can't. She chose her. She's mine."

Her hand stretched outward. The shadows thickened, tendrils of black mist snaking across the floor toward Rika's ankles.

"Renji!" Rika gasped, stumbling back.

Renji dropped low, swiping his hand across the creeping mist, only for it to sear cold into his skin like acid. He hissed, forcing himself between Rika and the tendrils.

"Not happening."

[Warning: Direct Hostile Contact Detected.]

[System Skill Unlocked – Soldier's Will.]

Effect: Converts combat instinct into resistance against non-physical threats. Duration: 3 minutes.

Just 3 minutes????? Well that will do!!!

Energy flared in him. His body, honed through years of war, hardened even against this unnatural chill. The shadows recoiled when he pushed back, flaring in defiance.

"Cute trick," Renji growled, standing tall. "But I've fought worse things than death. You're not taking her."

For the first time, Saki's smile faltered. Just slightly.

She hissed, form flickering, and the storm of papers exploded outward, slashing like blades.

"Move!" Renji barked.

Reina yanked Rika down behind a cabinet. Mayumi leapt forward, swatting the flying pages aside with raw speed, but even she winced as edges cut shallow lines across her arms.

Renji surged through the gale, his body shielding the others. Every step forward was a fight against the oppressive air, but his will burned hotter.

He stopped mere feet from Saki, his voice low, cutting through the shrieking storm.

"You think fear makes her yours? No. Fear makes her mine. Because I'll burn it out of her, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Saki's smile twitched. Her eyes widened, black voids stretching like cracks across glass. The storm wavered, faltering under his words.

"No… she's mine…" Her voice cracked for the first time, no longer smooth but desperate.

Renji pressed harder, every word a weapon. "You died here. Alone. Forgotten. That's not Rika's fault. You want someone to blame? Blame the ones who left you. But you don't get to drag her down with you."

Rika's voice broke through then, fragile but fierce. "I won't be yours. Because… I already belong to him."

She rose shakily from behind the cabinet, clutching Renji's sleeve. Her trembling stopped the moment her fingers curled into his jacket.

The System pulsed.

[Bond Affirmation: Complete.]

[Emotional Sync Strengthened.]

[Effect: Hostile Presence Severed – Temporary.]

The shadows writhed violently. Saki let out a piercing scream, the air itself fracturing. Her form glitched, flickering between girl and a hollow outline, before finally snapping—vanishing into a rush of black mist that sucked back into the walls.

Silence fell.

The papers dropped lifelessly. Frost melted from the shelves. The oppressive weight lifted.

Renji stood still, chest heaving, sweat slick on his forehead.

Rika collapsed against him, clutching his shirt with both fists, sobbing with raw relief. Reina lowered her flashlight slowly, her face pale but composed. Mayumi exhaled sharply, wiping the blood from her forearm with a smirk that didn't quite mask her shaken nerves.

"She's gone…" Rika whispered, burying her face into Renji's chest. "Renji… you saved me."

He held her close, his voice steady though his hands still trembled from the encounter. "No. We saved you. She won't own you again."

Reina adjusted her glasses, eyes narrowing at the empty aisle where Saki vanished. "Gone… but not finished. That wasn't exorcism. That was suppression. She'll be back."

Renji's gaze hardened. "Then next time, we'll be ready."

His arms tightened around Rika as the System chimed one last time.

[Quest Progress: Identity Revealed.]

[Next Objective: Eliminate the Anomaly.]

[Success in protecting your Milfs]

And Renji knew, this battle had just begun.
