Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 58 – E Rank

As Damion channeled his mana into his sword he focused on the training dummy in front of him. Just as he had before, Damion brought his sword down in an overhead slash, hitting the test dummy in the shoulder. Once Damion was finished with his power slash he let out a breath and sat down on the floor of the examination room to recover his stamina.

"Very good," the Adventurer Association clerk said over the intercom. "Move through to the next room once you are ready."

After a short moment of rest, Damion rose to his feet and headed to the next part of the test. The agility exam. This was only Damion's second time attempting this part of the exam and this time, he hoped he was better prepared. Damion kept his sword out, held in a forward guard position, ready to start intercepting the balls he knew would be coming from the holes in the walls and ceiling.

"The exam will begin in 3… 2… 1…" the Association clerk announced.

The moment the clerk finished her countdown the first ball was shot towards him. Damion easily blocked the first ball and no sooner had his sword knocked the ball aside, did another ball come at him from above. This time Damion pivoted, letting the ball slam into the floor, just as the ball passed him another ball was launched from the wall to his left. With a flick of his wrists, Damion intercepted the ball from the wall and swatted the previous ball on its bounce off the floor.

Damion felt he was doing a bit better this time around than he had on his first go, but he felt something was different this time. It took Damion deflecting another four balls before he realized what was different. The balls were moving faster. Not a great deal faster, but enough of an increase to make the test more difficult.

As the balls continued to fly, more and more were launched each time. Two at a time, then three. Damion moved fluidly, his sword a blur of motion as he sliced the balls from the air. Without Ms. Teft's training bracelets on his arms and legs, Damion felt as light as a feather. When four balls at a time started being launched, Damion found himself beginning to get overwhelmed.

No longer able to take out all the new balls launched, Damion was forced to dodge out of the way of the balls that he could not yet take out. As the number of loose balls grew Damion knew he needed to clear them out or he was going to be knocked out of the test.

Just as Damion managed to knock half the balls in the air down, he was hit from behind by several balls. The impact sent Damion stumbling forward. He was able to stop himself from landing facedown, but his effort would have looked quite comical to the clerk and Ms. Teft as they watched his performance.

"Excellent," the clerk said after Damion caught his balance. "Move on to the next room when you are ready. You will have one minute to kill the beast."

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Damion took a moment to catch his breath before he took a deep breath and headed to the next chamber. Chained in the center of the chamber was a large grey wolf. Damion was not familiar with this particular type of Ferocious Beast, but Damion knew it was E Rank. All he had to do now was kill it.

As Damion began to channel mana into his sword, the grey wolf was freed from its chain. By the time Damion had fully charged the fire attack glyph on his sword, the grey wolf was only a meter away from Damion. Slashing his sword out, Damion released his fire slash which instantly turned the grey wolf into nothing more than a hunk of smoldering meat.

After Damion dispatched the beast, he sheathed his sword and turned towards the exit to see it opening. On the other side of the doorway Ms. Teft was giving Damion an appraising look while the clerk was busy on her tablet.

"Alright Knight Wells," the clerk said as Damion stepped through to observation room. "Your magic power test gave you a rating of 612. Which normally would mean we would not bother with the rest of the test since you scored well over 500. But Ms. Teft asked that you go through all three tests."

"How did I do on the other tests?" Damion asked a weight lifted from his shoulders. He knew he had passed, given how much he scored on the first test and how he felt he did on the other two, but he wanted to know what his final score was.

"On your agility test you scored 43. Your sword is a D Rank artifact, so you lose 15 points for using it, but since you finished within the time limit and you did not get injured you've earned yourself 50 points."

"705," Damion shouted with his eyes wide as he added his scores up.

"Yes, good work. I've updated your adventurer license in the system. You are now officially an E Rank adventurer. You will be able to take E Rank missions."

Ms. Teft and Damion left the Adventurer Association and headed to Leland's so Damion could pick up his new armor. When they entered the store, Leland's eyes lit up when he saw Ms. Teft.

"Helga my dear. What brings you here today?"

"I wanted to review the armor you crafted for Damion," Ms. Teft answered.

"Not a problem, not a problem. Here take a look."

Leland hoisted a chest up and set it on the counter. When Leland opened it, Damion could see pieces of red leather armor inside. Piece by piece, Damion watched as Leland pulled his new armor out of the chest and set them on the counter.

As each piece was set on the counter, Ms. Teft would pick them up and look them over. Damion was guessing that she was inspecting the enchantments on the pieces, wanting to make sure everything was in order.

"Well, at least you aren't giving him leftover pieces of crap," Ms. Teft said as she set the last piece down. "Scorch Asp leather. Naturally resistant to fire, enchanted to resist attacks up to peak D Rank. With the chest piece and the gauntlets having additional defensive glyphs. When charged they create a shield that can absorb and block a single C Rank attack."

"Glad you approve," Leland told Ms. Teft. "Now, let's get the armor fitted."

Damion moved closer and took the chest piece in his hands. He slipped the armor over his head and began lacing up the side. Once he had it on Leland came around the counter and adjusted the armor, allowing the armor to fit Damion more comfortably.

Piece by piece, Damion donned his new armor. Gauntlets, thigh and shin plates, and finally boots. When Damion pulled the boots on and stood up he tried moving around a bit to get the feel of the armor and Damion was surprised to find the armor was quite flexible.

"I feel like I can take on the world," Damion said flexing as he moved in the armor.

"Don't let the armor go to your head," Ms. Teft warned. "But I do have an idea for your next mission."
