Chapter 51 – The Graveyard Part 2
Damion heard a thud behind him, and he then saw a skull roll past his feet. Turning, Damion saw Ethan twirling the dagger in his left hand while he offered Damion a salute with the one in his right.
"Don't let up," Arica called out as she stored the corpse of the latest skeleton into her personal storage space.
Recognizing the necessity of keeping up the pace, Damion slashed his sword across the chest of another skeleton causing it to collapse into a pile of bones. All around them, skeletons were beginning to pull themselves free of the ground. Damion realized that he would no longer be able face just one skeleton at a time and the skeletons he saw rising now were wearing armor and had weapons.
What troubled Damion more than the number of skeletons he would soon be facing was that his arms were beginning to feel heavy. The bracelets on his arms and legs were starting to weigh on him and slow his actions. He needed a few moments to rest and let his arms rest, but it did not look like he was going to get the time he needed.
After Damion took out another five skeletons he began to consider using the fire attack glyph to thin out the skeletons that were on their way towards him. If he torched the next wave he would buy himself some time.
As Damion channeled his mana into the fire attack glyph he prepared to release his attack. Unfortunately, another skeleton had gotten close to him and Damion had to fight it first. This skeleton, while not wearing armor, did have a sword. Damion exchanged blows with it, but he could not get past the skeleton's defense.
Ethan understood Damion's predicament and when Damion and the skeleton had locked swords, Ethan lunged in sliced off both the skeleton's arms. When Damion's sword was free, he brought his sword down on the skeleton's collar bone and slashed across the skeleton's chest. The skeleton collapsed, but the next wave was closing in.
Luckily, Damion had already channeled his mana into the attack glyph and all he needed to do was release it on the approaching skeletons. Damion unleashed his attack in the fire pillar form. As the pillar of fire engulfed the first skeleton Damion willed his attack to sweep across the graveyard and across the approaching skeletons.
The skeleton closest to Damion collapsed into a pile of ashes while the ones further away were only moderately or lightly incinerated. The skeleton that was the furthest away Damion and the last one struck by the attack, had a sword and a shield. The skeleton with the shield was able to use it to block Damion's attack, coming out unharmed.
"Impressive, only one left in this wave," Justiciar Mathis said in evaluation of Damion's attack.
The Justiciar had examined the glyph on Damion's sword after his first encounter with the Falks Guild and knew very well what the glyph was capable of. The attack that Damion had unleashed was close to the limit of what the glyph could do. Damion's sword and the glyph was D Rank, while Damion was only an F Rank knight.
The skeleton with the sword and shield moved to close the distance with Damion's party. Before the skeleton could move too close, Arica released a magic attack of her own. During the fighting with the Falks Guild members, Arica had unleashed lightning, but this time her attack was a boulder that smashed into the skeleton and pinned it to the ground. Ethan moved in close and kicked the neck of the skeleton, sending its head flying and making the rest of the skeleton go still.

Damion saw the next wave of skeletons closing in and decided to unleash another attack from his fire glyph. This wave fared better than the last. All of these skeletons carried weapons and about half had shields. The ones with shields were able to block most of Damion's attack which also protected the ones without that were behind the skeletons with shields.
"Are they learning from our attacks or are they just getting lucky?" Ethan asked. He knew the Justiciar had cleared this dungeon before, so he hoped the man would share any insights he might have.
"Learning," Justiciar Mathis said flatly.
If Justiciar Mathis was right, which Damion was sure was the case, using more of his fire attacks was not the solution to taking out this wave of skeletons. The problem was, just as they had learned to protect themselves from his fire attack, they had also learned how to sword fight from him fighting the first waves.
"Arica, try and take the ones with shields out with boulders." Damion instructed. He just hoped the skeletons would not be able to learn how to avoid being crushed too quickly.
"How many more waves of skeletons will we have to fight?" Ethan asked as the skeletons closed in.
Damion could see there were six of them still standing. Three less than a moment ago since Arica had crushed three with boulders.
"This is the last wave of normal skeletons," Justiciar Mathis announced. "Once they are dead, the champions will break free of the mausoleums."
"Good," Ethan said as he rushed forward.
Knowing that they did not have to worry about more skeletons rising from the ground, Ethan decided he could dispatch the skeletons faster than Damion since the skeletons had not seen him fight as much.
Ethan moved between the remaining skeletons. With quick slashes at the open flanks of the skeletons, Ethan struck wherever the opportunity presented and whenever one or more of the skeletons moved to block him or tried to box him in, Ethan would roll away.
With Ethan garnering all the attention from the skeletons, Damion was able to close in behind several. With a few quick slashes Damion took out three of the remaining skeletons. When the other skeletons turned to go after the bigger threat, Damion, Ethan finished them off from behind.
As soon as the last skeleton collapsed on the ground the door of the closest mausoleum exploded outward. From the mausoleum came a large skeleton wearing a chest plate and helm carrying a large war hammer gripped in both hands.
With each step the skeleton champion took the ground in the graveyard shook. Damion looked to each of his party members in turn to see if they had any suggestions on how to deal with this skeleton. It was Justiciar Mathis that spoke up.
"This skeleton is at C Rank. It won't be as strong as the guardian, but you all will need to work together if you want to defeat it."
"Understood," Arica said as the skeleton champion moved closer. "Damion don't try to block the skeleton's hammer. The force of its attack will be more than enough to kill you in one blow."
"Right," Damion said as the he watched the skeleton approach.
The skeleton hefted the hammer above its head a few paces away. Just as Damion was wondering what the skeleton was going to do; it leapt into the air.
"Move!" Damion shouted.
A moment later the skeleton champion slammed its hammer into the ground where the party was standing just the moment prior. Damion rolled to his feet before the skeleton could free its hammer from the ground. Rushing to the skeleton's side, Damion slashed his sword against its leg.
What surprised Damion when his sword hit the skeleton's leg was not that he did not slice through the leg, it was a C Rank Demonic Beast after all, but that immediately after his sword struck, the skeleton kicked Damion sending Damion flying.
