Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 210 – Career Day Part 1

After leaving his last class of the day, Damion headed out to his usual spot in the grass by his dormitory to work on his spell casting. The amount of mental energy he had already expended on finding a way to complete his quest was exhausting and he needed to take a break from thinking. For now, he just welcomed Phil, who flew to his shoulder after being called and emptied his mind as he began casting spells with Elicia.

When students began returning to the school campus just ahead of the start of the second term, the presence of Phil caused a small uproar. Many noble students had never seen a Ferocious Beast and even those that had, their encounters were measured and safe, they were shown creatures in cages or under the protection of a strong family member. The exceptions were students from Green Zones and Yellow Zones. While not an everyday occurrence, most had lived through at least one beast wave and had seen both Ferocious and Demonic Beasts.

A few students had already been aware of Phil, having seen him flying around outside the school grounds last term, but now that he lived in Damion's dorm room, a lot more people were seeing the Snow Hawk. Damion was not allowed to take him into his classes, which was not such a bad thing, since Phil likely would not enjoy being cooped up inside all day. However, the Ferocious Beast was allowed free roam around the campus during the day, though it spent most of its time flying outside the grounds hunting, which meant most of the student body had seen the Snow Hawk.

The two weeks of the new school term passed uneventfully, unlike his first term. Thomas Sorin and his group of miscreants had given up on troubling Damion and without the encouragement of nobles, none of the standard students dared to challenge Damion for his elite status this term. This left Damon plenty of time to work on his idea for an artifact to examine magic cores as well as being able to make full use of the battle simulator.

Two free weekend sessions in the battle simulator allowed Damion to boost up several of his skills. Ice Sword rose to C Rank, while Ice Familiar and Spatial Storage both increased to E Rank, boosting his bond with Phil. With Spatial Storage's increase to E Rank, he was happy to learn the mana cost to pull objects into his personal spatial storage had dropped from ten mana per kilogram to nine. Concealed Aura also rose up to C Rank, which meant only the professors in the school were now capable of perceiving his magical aura. But most importantly, Damion was finally able to push spells to B Rank, which came with a pleasant reward.

True sight rose to B Rank and as the Magic System had previously promised, he could now see detailed information on whatever he looked at. From Elicia, he could see she was not just a D Rank, but he could also now see she was a Wind mage. For artifacts he could see detailed information on what the artifact did. The distance for his identification of things also increased to 100 meters. This gave him quite the advantage, not just in dungeons and labyrinths, but also in the real world.

The most surprising effect of True Sight was when he looked in a mirror. Unlike when he looked at other mages, the spell showed him their affinity, he did not see Ice mage with his Rank, just mage. Damion thought perhaps that it was due to him having unlocked multiple affinities, but he thought if that was really the case, it would make more sense if he saw all of his affinities instead of none. Whatever the reason, he put the question aside for now, he would figure it out eventually.

The other spell that increased to B Rank was Ice Shield. This defensive spell did not gain any magnificent secondary effects like True Sight had, but from what Damion could understand about the Ice Shield he cast to test it out, the strength of his Ice Shield had increased severalfold.

Combat in the battle simulator had done wonders for advancing the mastery of his spells, but that was all the combat practice Damion was likely to see for a while. Mage Teft had put her foot down that he was not allowed back in Argentum's labyrinth. And since the C Rank dungeon he discovered was kept by Levande, the city it was found nearest, there were no dungeons of his level in the Argentum to be able to do runs in.

This left Damion with little else to do except training, homework and working on his artifact. Unfortunately, he was not making much progress in working out the enchantments necessary for the artifact. The most he had been able to do was begin to study how Minor Heal flowed through his body when cast and study the magic seal to try to fully understand how the magic could find and fix injuries when cast.

On the first school day of the third week of school, instead of classes for the day, final term students reported to the main hall. Today was career day. Instead of dining tables, the hall was filled with booths with different members of various orders working them. Damion spotted a number of booths that he would have loved to run up to just a few years ago. Those booths belonged to prominent guilds like the Dawn Guild and the Dragon Heart Guild.

As a kid Damion had many a daydream about being able to join such powerful guilds, however, now those guilds held little interest to him. Elicia, as with all the other attendants, was forced to wait outside or in their charges' dormitory. The intent was to make sure students could browse, free of any agenda on the part of noble families, but for most of the elite students, their decisions had already been made. They were either already part of a noble family, would be joining one, or had somehow avoided being entrapped like Damion had and were now looking for a group that could shield them from the nobles.

Guilds, Orders, even the Adventurer Association and Mage Association had booths set up. On the far side of the hall, Damion spotted the booth belonging to the Crimson Order, but he held himself back from rushing over to see what they had to offer recruits. To not appear over eager towards any one organization, to avoid Headmaster Sorin from learning his plans, Damion began visiting each booth in turn as he worked his way around the hall.

Most booths did not offer him much in the way of variety. The first dozen Damion stopped at were just small guilds, hoping to get a few talented students to join, but would settle even for the students who would end up following the knight path.

The Adventurer Association offered a surprising number of openings for decent pay. They had openings in nearly every position, including branch manager openings. Though for that position, Damion had to reach B Rank for an opening in a Yellow Zone and A Rank for a position in a Green Zone. Other open positions included dungeon attendants, branch clerks, mission reviewers, cooks, maids and even scouts. Even if he was interested in working for the Association, such jobs were time consuming and left little or no time for a person to grow stronger. These were jobs for people that had no interest in advancing further and just wanted a steady job to work at while they settled down.

The next booth that caught Damion's attention, was for the Justiciar Order. While he had a poor experience with the Justiciar Order here in Argentum, back in Saung, Justiciar Mathis Moretti had been a stand-up fellow. The several encounters he had with the Moretti, had been cordial and the Justiciar had even escorted his team through Damion's first dungeon run. Even if it had been as a favor to Mage Teft, it was still a nice thing he had done.

As much as Damion knew law enforcement was necessary for a functional society and even if he considered such a career choice an honorable one, he had no interest in pursuing such a career. After taking some brochures and listening to the recruiting pitch by the Justiciar at the booth, Damion moved on to the next booth.
