Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 184 – What Comes Next

After Mage Teft left Damion headed to his room, telling Elicia he wanted to meditate, but in reality he wanted to check on a few things in the Magic System.

'System, status.'

'Ten thousand credits,' Damion thought as he mentally whistled to himself. 'With that I could not just get an affinity but upgrade it a few times too.'

The desire Damion had to buy an additional affinity had been growing lately. While he had survived his encounter with Devon Blanche, the encounter showed how powerless he was against someone with the same affinity as him. Blanche was a B Rank mage, but the fellow Ice mage had also been unable to use his magic much against him either. He knew the main reason for this was because his Ice affinity was EX Rank while Blanche was only S Rank. That meant his spells would overpower the other parties. However, even with that advantage Damion still felt it would be better to have an alternate affinity, so he could cast a different type of spell if he ran into this situation again.

The problem was what he learned about multiple affinities. How those people had to split their mana capacity between types of mana. Something about that had felt off to Damion, but he had yet to ask the Magic System, he figured now was as good a time as any.

'System, can I freely learn any magic affinity?'

{Host is capable of acquiring all affinities. However, host should take into account the restriction of how many magic seals host can master.}

Damion paused for a moment to consider the Magic System's answer. He could learn every affinity, but what would be the point if he didn't have a spell to go along with the affinity. Right now, as a C Rank, he could learn twenty magic seals. The System once told him he could learn five magic seals per Rank, which meant at S Rank he would be able to learn thirty-five magic seals. Which seemed like a lot to Damion, but how many affinities were there? Would that even equate to a spell per affinity?

As amazing as having every affinity sounded to Damion, he realized it was not practical. A few spells mastered were greater than many spells he could barely use. Though the idea of advancing a dozen spells from F Rank to D or even C Rank and collecting the quest reward sounded quite lucrative.

'System, if I acquire another affinity, how will my mana capacity be split?'

This was Damion's other concern. Teft had told him mages with multiple affinities had to deal with their mana capacity split between the affinities and they had to keep them in balance. Damion assumed his current mana capacity was all allocated to Ice mana and if he gained another affinity that would either be split or he would have to accumulate the other mana type.

{Unlike other beings in this world, host's mana is unaligned and therefore does not need to be split to accommodate additional affinities.}

'If my mana is unaligned then why can't I just cast any magic seal?'

{Host's affinity is engraved onto your magic core. When host pulls mana out through that engraving, it becomes that affinity and is then channeled and cast through a particular spell. The mages of this world also engrave magic seals on their cores during the memorization process to allow use. Because of this they have more difficulty learning and manipulating multiple affinities.}

'How do I cast a spell if I don't have the magic seals engraved on my core like everyone else?'

{The Magic System serves as your repository for magic seals. This allows host to learn an unlimited number of magic seals if the appropriate price is paid. Host will have only the affinity engraved on your magic core. To channel magic of the appropriate affinity host will only have to channel through the corresponding affinity engraving.}

'Well, that is a load off my shoulders,' Damion thought.

From what the Magic System said, Damion would be able to learn all the affinities without any significant drawbacks. Of course, getting an affinity and not having any magic seals to use with the affinity would be a waste. The Magic System had stored a number of tier 1 spells for a variety of affinities. If he bought an affinity from the System, Damion felt there was a good chance he would have at least one spell for a second affinity. The problem was, even if he bought another affinity, how was he supposed to practice another affinity without everyone questioning him.

'Water,' Damion thought suddenly. 'Teft told me that Water affinity spells could be used by Ice mages and Ice affinity spells by Water mages. I should be able to do that. Wait… I know a Water spell. System, why can't I cast the Clean Water spell?'

{Host does not have Water affinity.}

'Isn't ice just water? System, shouldn't I be able to covert the ice I create through a spell to water?'

{Conversion of ice to water is possible with a conversion spell cast along with the corresponding Ice or Water spell.}

'Wait, I need an additional spell to convert my Ice magic to Water magic?'

{Affirmative.}

'Probably easier just to randomly get a Water affinity from the Shop than getting that conversion spell.'

{Affirmative.}

Damion ignored the Magic System answering his rhetorical question. 'System, what can you tell me about these hidden quests?'

{Hidden Quests are only revealed once host has acquired enough knowledge to undertake them or has inadvertently completed them.}

'You told me that already. Is there some secret agenda for these hidden quests?'

{Error. Unable to answer host's question.}

'The quest, Learn the Truth of Magic, what does that even mean? What truth? Isn't magic just magic? A part of the world like anything else, like air or water.'

{Magic System is currently unable to provide hints outside of quest descriptions.}

'Currently?' Damion thought. 'Under what circumstances can you provide hints?'

{Quest hints can be purchased when Magic System reaches level 4.}

'Level 4?' Damion was quite surprised the System would grant him the ability of getting hints on how to complete quests, but then he thought there might be more to these hidden quests. But having to wait until level 4 was depressing, he did not even know how much experience he would need to get the System to level 4.

'System, what will unlock at level 3?' If the Magic System was in a talkative mood, Damion figured he should take advantage while he could.

{At level 3 the Magic System will unlock artifact upgrades. Higher tier spells will be available for purchase in the Shop. And Magic Core converter will be unlocked.}

'Higher tier spells? What tier spells are available currently from the Shop?'

{The tier of magic seals available in the Shop is the same as same as the level of the Magic System.}

'So, right now only tier 1 and tier 2 seals are available?'

{Affirmative.}

'What about the Magic Core Converter, what does it do?'

{The Magic Core Converter allows the host to convert magic cores into Store Credits.}

Damion froze when he heard that. He could convert magic cores into credits. That was fantastic, but then Damion realized what the System said, magic cores into credits. Magic cores came from people.
