Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 178 – The Enemy Of My Enemy

Damion tried to focus most of his attacks on Mage Blanche. More of his spells were finding their mark against him, but most just bounced off his defensive enchantments. Damion's C Rank magic power was not enough to pierce through the B Rank defenses. The few that did not bounce off were intercepted by Mage Blanche's Ice Sword.

"Can we get out of here?" Mage Blythe begged Damion. After having nearly died once today, the healer was not willing to further tempt fate.

"I suppose we…"

Damion's moment of inattentiveness to the battle led to Mage Sooter hitting the Ice Sword with a Fire Lance. The direct hit from the spell managed to crack the Ice Sword and before Damion could reinforce his spell, the blade broke.

From 20 meters in the air, Mage Blythe and Damion plummeted to the ground. For Damion such a fall was not an issue. He landed hard but was able to roll and mitigate most of the impact. Mage Blythe, however, was not so lucky. The healer did not have as strong of a body as the Ice mage, and even if he did, Blythe was not as proficient in combat and thus not able to orient himself during the fall. Mage Blythe hit the ground with a snap.

Once on his feet, Damion turned to where Mage Blythe fell. The healer had landed badly on one leg, he appeared to have broken an ankle and was quickly healing himself. Their enemies, however, were not going to give him that time.

"Kill him!" Mage Blanche shouted when he saw Damion on the ground.

There was no time for Damion to get him and Mage Blythe airborne again, but he felt he did not need to. Each of these mages had been fighting and casting spells for a while now, even Damion felt the strain on his mana reserves. His former teammates and the Fontane brothers were unlikely to be able to last long against him.

Mage Grier shot a Whirlwind Sphere at Damion, forcing him to dive out of the way. As he dove he cast an Ice Shard at Lucas Fontane. The Fire mage tried to cast a spell to block the Ice Shard, but Damion's ice crystal broke through the weaker mage's spell and imbedded itself in Lucas' right shoulder.

After finishing his dive and rolling to his feet, Damion cast Ice Sword and Ice Shield while running headlong towards his attackers.

Mage Sooter tried to hit Damion with a Fireball, but the spell harmlessly splashed off Ice Shield. A moment later Damion closed in on the C Rank Fire mage, slashing with his Ice Sword. Mage Sooter jumped back to avoid the blow but was blocked from escaping by one of the last remaining goblins. The goblin stabbed the mage in the leg, slowing his movements and allowing Damion to close in.

Without the mobility to dodge, Mage Sooter tried to force Damion away with Fire Breath. However, he had hardly started breathing fire at the Ice mage when the spell cut off. Mage Sooter had run out of mana and could not keep the spell active. A quick stab from Damion's Ice Sword put a permanent end to the Fire mage's casting.

While Damion dealt with Sooter, Mage Grier had consumed a mana potion. He was eager not to follow in Mage Sooter's footsteps. The Fontane brothers, seeing they stood no chance against Damion, moved on Mage Blythe. Either hoping to use him against Damion or to just kill the healer to vent some of their frustration.

The healer managed to finish healing his ankle before the two Fire mages closed in and was scrambling to keep away from them. Damion sent a few Ice Shards towards the Fontanes, but they were poorly aimed, intended to slow them down, not kill them outright, and only forced the brothers to delay their pursuit of Blythe slightly.

Recharged by his consumption of a mana potion, Mage Grier cast another Whirlwind Sphere at Damion, catching him off guard as he was focused on the Fontane brothers. The attack hit Damion in the upper back, and he fell forward. The defensive wards in his armor held, but he was still knocked to ground, his face planting in the ground.

Mage Blanche, despite still fighting with the B Rank goblin warrior, dashed towards Damion the moment he hit the ground. The opportunity to finish Damion off was evidently more important than killing the goblin. Mage Blanche crossed the distance to him in the blink of an eye, but what Mage Blanche had overlooked were the other goblins.

There were still three goblins, besides the B Rank, left. The moment Damion and Mage Blythe fell, everyone had focused on them. Once on the ground, just like while he was in the air Damion focused all his attacks towards his real enemies, not bothering to attack the goblins at all. Because of this, something never recorded in the history of Nerotath happened, the goblins defended a human.

The three remaining goblins were C Rank warriors and when Mage Blanche moved to strike down Damion, they intercepted him, buying him the time needed to scramble to his feet. Mage Blanche was confused by the goblins' actions, defending a mage seemed very out of their nature, but he attributed it up to the goblins wanting to gang up on him since he and the B Rank Goblin were evenly matched. Which is precisely what happened in the next few seconds.

The B Rank goblin closed in on Mage Blanche and the rogue Ice mage found himself fighting four goblins at once. Mage Grier decided it was in his best interest to help Blanche, instead of chasing after Damion, since without Mage Blanche they would all be killed by the B Rank goblin.

Damion, however, thought of something else. Mage Teft had taught him about the other races and how it was theorized they were from other worlds being brought to Nerotath by the Realm Breaches. Damion knew there was other life out there somewhere, and he knew that life was intelligent. Any honest adventurer that had ever encountered goblins would admit they were intelligent, but many knights and mages refused to see it because how different the goblins appeared.

Goblins looked very different from humans, more akin to giant frogs than people, Damion had yet to encounter the Iblis or the Alfar, but they were reportedly closer to humans in appearance. Though Teft had described them as being opposite sides of the same coin, with the Iblis being dark and the Alfar being light. But both of those races were supposed to be intelligent as well.

To Damion, the goblins actions were not to gang up on Mage Blanche, but to protect him, since he had not been hostile to them and was fighting the mages that had attacked them.

'The enemy of my enemy is my friend.' Damion thought of the old Earth saying.

Now that Damion was back on his feet and he saw Mage Blanche fighting the four remaining goblins, he realized this was his best chance to escape with Mage Blythe who had disappeared. However, seeing that Mage Grier and the Fontane brothers were joining Mage Blanche to fight the goblins, Damion also knew this was his best chance to finish them off.

Before any of his attackers realized what he was doing, Damion channeled as fast as he could and started casting Ice Shard. His first attack hit Tray Fontane in the back of the neck and cut clean through the mage, dropping the Fire mage before the others even realized Damion had stuck around instead of fleeing while he had the chance.

Damion's next Ice Shards still managed to catch Mage Grier and Lucas Fontane off guard, but they only suffered minor wounds from the ice crystals. Before the two mages could come up with a plan to attack Damion, he was on them.

Even while casting Ice Shard, Damion had rushed towards his enemies knowing it would be easier for him to slice them with his sword than it was to hit them with Ice Shard once they were watching for it.

Mage Grier sent a quick Wind Slash at Damion, hoping to slow him down, but he cut through it with his Ice Sword. The next moment he was in front of Mage Grier ready to land a finishing blow. Mage Blanche, apparently not wanting one of his last allies to be taken out, cast Ice Wall blocking Damion's attack, unfortunately for Mage Blanche and Lucas Fontane, Damion had applied the method of fighting goblins to fighting these rogue mages.

Damion's real target was Lucas, only a short distance from Mage Grier, but Mage Blanche's Ice Wall only served to protect Mage Grier. As he swung his Ice Sword, instead of continuing the arc with the blade and hitting the Ice Wall, Damion released his sword and controlled it to attack Lucas Fontane.
