Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 155 – Ninth Floor

"If what you say is true, I should put my team together now and go kill the bastard in Argentum's labyrinth while I have the chance," Theodore Bianco said as he listened to a new friend.

"Teft is protecting the kid during this run. She's calling it a class exercise," Thomas Sorin replied to Mage Bianco.

"Then why tell me this at all. I thought you said I would finally have a chance to get rid of that moron."

"I reached out to you so we can prepare and coordinate for the next time he goes into the labyrinth."

"Next time? How the hell are we supposed to know when the next time he will be in the labyrinth is?"

"Mid-term break," Mage Sorin said simply.

"You think he will go into the labyrinth again during the mid-term break?"

"Wouldn't you if you had the opportunity?"

"I suppose I would. What is your plan?" Mage Bianco asked.

"I have permissions as a final year student at Silver Spire to take a team into the labyrinth just like Wells does. I'll form a small team of people I can trust, your job will be to recruit a few higher-level people to help us. Wells is a C Rank now, so we will need C Ranks of our own if we want to handle him."

"There are a few people I know who will be happy to join in."

Damion and his team had made it to the ninth floor of the labyrinth, it only took them most of their weekend. With time running out on his assignment the team was in a bit of a rush to complete the tenth floor.

With the rush, and that they were now on D Rank floors, Gene and Elicia had lost most of their ability to help. The pair could still take on the weaker Demonic Beasts encountered, but after the amount of fighting they had already been through they were running low on mana and in need of rest.

Luckily, since they were now on a D Rank Floor, Damion could freely take on the Demonic Beasts they encountered as they moved towards the entrance to the tenth floor.

"You have eight hours left," Arica told Damion. "You could let the team rest and recover a bit. You should still have time to clear the tenth floor within the time limit."

"When we get to the tenth floor we will take a break," Damion replied as he cast Ice Shard.

Damion's ice crystal flew out and cut into a Demonic Beast that was hidden in the branches of a nearby tree. A monkey-like creature fell from the tree to the ground and Arica quickly scooped it up into her personal spatial storage. It was just an E Rank Demonic Beast and Damion had already killed close to thirty of them on this floor. It was not a threat to him, but still dangerous to some of his team members.

Over the last few days in the labyrinth Damion had learned a lot about it. First was that the first three floors were F Rank and each was almost an identical open plain full of Demonic Beasts commonly found in grasslands.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

The next three floors were a bit different. These floors were E Ranked and started around a lake in the countryside. From the lake flowed a river which the fifth floor followed. The sixth floor followed the river to the ocean. Damion had paused the team for a long while at the ocean. The team thought it was so they could rest before moving on to the D Rank floors, but it was Damion's first time in either lifetime seeing the ocean and he wanted to take in the sight for as long as possible.

When Damion entered the seventh floor, he found it similar to the Wind Wolf dungeon. A forest environment with tall trees and thick underbrush. Normally, higher Rank dungeons were filled with a balanced mix of Demonic Beasts from F Rank to whatever the Rank of the dungeon was. The labyrinth partially followed the same rules, however the floors tended to have a higher percentage of Demonic Beasts near the top Rank of the floor than a balanced mixed.

"I think I see this floor's guardian up ahead," Damion told the team as they walked through the forest.

True Sight had turned into a real blessing for Damion. Being able to see the Rank of a Demonic Beast allowed him a quick way to not just see their strength, but know they were there. In the long grasses of the first few floors, it was useful for small Demonic Beasts, but now, in the Forest, Damion was finding it essential. He was able to easily spot and subsequently target and kill Demonic Beasts in their hiding places long before they were in a position to attack the team.

The Demonic Beast Damion spotted was another primate looking creature, but quite a bit larger than the monkey he had killed a moment ago. The Demonic Beast looked like a giant blue haired gorilla.

Raising his palm Damion cast Ice Shard, sending an ice crystal flying through the air. The Demonic Beast seemed to sense his spell and leapt out of the tree. When the Demonic Beast hit the ground, it was like a small earthquake, the ground shook and Gene lost his balance.

"That is a Water Ape," Elicia managed to get out before the Demonic Beast opened its mouth and a powerful jet of water shot out heading towards Damion.

Damion cast Ice Shield and blocked the Demonic Beast's attack. Before Damion even lowered his shield to see what the Water Ape was going to do next, he both heard and felt the four-meter-tall creature charging towards him.

Casting Ice Breath, Damion threw a cloud of frozen air in front of him, not to hit the Water Ape, it was still too far away, but to block its line of sight. Once he created a large enough cloud he jumped up and over the rapidly dissipating field of frozen air. As Damion was coming down he saw the Demonic Beast rushing headlong into his cloud of cold air.

Damion cast Ice Shard several times in quick succession at the Demonic Beast. Three of the four spells he cast pierced the Water Ape's back causing it to roar in pain, but mostly in anger. Damion landed on his feet a few meters away from the Water Ape and began casting another Ice Shard before the Demonic Beast could turn around.

Once the Demonic Beast located Damion again it immediately charged towards him while sending another jet of water at the young mage. A new Ice Shield sprang to life on Damion's arm, blocking the Demonic Beast's attack.

Another Ice Shard leapt from his palm after blocking the Demonic Beast's attack and hit the Water Ape in the center of the chest. The Demonic Beast kept running towards Damion, even after two more Ice Shards sunk into the Water Ape's flesh.

Damion dove out of the Water Ape's path as the Demonic Beast tried to hit him with a backhand from its powerful arms. This time, when the Demonic Beast realized Damion had dodged, it turned its attention to his teammates.

Just as Damion was rolling to his feet from his dodge he saw the Water Ape turn towards Gene. He did not think, he just launched himself at the Water Ape as it closed in on his fellow student.

Damion slammed into the side of the Water Ape as it made its way to flatten Gene into paste. The Water Ape barely even noticed the impact and at first completely ignored him, even when Damion held onto its fur, the beast barely acknowledged his existence.

However, when Damion cast Icy Grasp on the Water Ape as he clung to its fur the Demonic Beast quickly realized it had made a mistake by ignoring him. Unfortunately, for the Water Ape that realization came too late, Damion's Icy Grasp had already begun to freeze the Demonic Beast solid.
