Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 118 – Almost

After what seemed an eternity, though it was actually less than a minute, Damion could no longer channel mana into the blood red testing crystal. The crystal was now glowing bright red and as Damion pulled his hand away, waiting to see what would happen next, the crystal projected a series of words into the air.

Magic Power: 4830

Mana Capacity: 1898

Damion quickly checked the Magic System status window in his mind to see how accurate the testing crystal was. To Damion's surprise the testing crystal was spot on. Over the last couple of days, Damion had increased his magic power and mana capacity, but not by much and not by enough to reach C Rank.

Perhaps he was not a C Rank yet, but judging by the increase he managed since the Magic System unlocked and the time he had until classes began at Silver Spire Magic Academy, Damion was sure he could get to C Rank by then. He just needed to make sure he heeded Mage Teft's advice and not overwork himself.

"What now?" Damion asked. The test was done, but no one had come over the intercom to tell him if he was free to leave or if there was another test they wanted him to take.

"Mage Wells do you know how much mana the average C Rank mage possesses?" Asked Headmaster Sorin's voice over the intercom.

"Sorry, I don't," Damion answered simply. He of course knew he had more mana than the average mage of his level from Arica's and Mage Teft's various comments as he practiced. But he had never bothered to ask what was considered normal.

"A C Rank mage typically only has about 1,000 mana."

Damion raised an eyebrow at that but said nothing. Everyone now knew how much mana he had and of course as he continued to grow at the pace he had been, then very soon he would have more than double the average mana capacity. If Damion factored in what he could potentially buy as upgrades from the Magic System, then there was a good chance Headmaster Sorin would faint if Damion's mana capacity was ever tested again.

"Am I free to go now?" Damion asked. He did not want to be rude, but he also did not want to stick around and have to answer more questions.

"Yes. Please have your license updated by the clerk at the front desk on your way out," Manager Halsey's voice told him.

Not needing to be told twice, Damion headed out of the testing room and waited at the front desk while the clerk on duty updated his license. In the short few moments it took, Damion looked around the common area of the Adventurer Association.

Just a few days ago the room had been filled with injured adventurers, but now the place was back to normal. Damion could not help but wonder if a healer had come by and patched those adventurers up or if they had relied on friends or family to buy healing potions from the Association.

"Here you are, Mage Wells," the clerk said as she passed him his adventurer license back to him.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Damion's license now showed he was a D Rank Mage instead of a D Rank knight. Instead of pocketing his license, Damion walked over to the mission terminals and scanned his license. The missions that came up were the same as the ones he had seen before. Damion had half expected there to be special missions just for mages, and perhaps there would be in the future, but right now all the missions were typical clean up sweeps of the area around Saung and the Benault Forest.

As Damion scrolled through the list of missions one caught his eye.

Mission: 1607-12-422 – Type: Solo Hunt – Start Time: N/A – Target: Fire Scorpion x 5 – Location: Benault Forest – Reward: 2 Silver

This was the second mission he had ever done and his first mission to kill Ferocious Beasts. Damion remembered the fun time he had with Ethan Hoyt on this mission and could not help but wonder where his friend was now. Damion knew that Ethan was now helping his father run the family business and was often not in Saung. With the beast wave Damion could not help but wonder if his friend was doing alright.

Damion decided to accept the mission to kill Fire Scorpions. They were easy Ferocious Beasts to kill and numerous. What Damion needed the most was to practice with his new spells and the Fire Scorpions should give him plenty of targets to refine his casting techniques.

While practice was the reason Damion could admit to for taking a mission, the real reason was that he did not want to return home. Every time he walked through his house he felt the weight of his loss, around every corner he was expecting to find Bethany jumping out trying to catch him by surprise. Damion just could not deal with the memories right now. A mission was exactly the distraction he needed.

Damion already had his adventuring gear and armor stored in the Magic System's inventory so there was no need for him to head back to his home to collect anything. After accepting the mission Damion walked out of the Adventurer Association and headed to the east gate.

The wall which had been breached by the gate was now properly repaired and Damion could see crews working to install new magic cannons in places where the old ones had been destroyed.

Not far from the gate was a ground car rental shop. They did a lot of business with adventurers heading out on missions. Damion could see the available ground cars were pretty slim pickings, most were probably rented out to adventurers doing clean up missions on the countryside. This did not matter to Damion though; he was intending to walk.

After showing his license to the guards at the gate, Damion walked out of Saung and started walking along the road towards Benault Forest. By ground car he could reach the forest and even drive clean through to Bufort in just a few hours, but on foot it was going to take him quite some time, possibly even days.

This was exactly what Damion wanted though, time to be alone and practice. Once Damion put some distance between him and the gate, Damion began casting spells. He activated True Sight, and began alternating between Ice Shield, Ice Breath and Ice Shard. One after another Damion cast the spells as he walked along the road.

There was not another soul in sight, but if there was they surely would have paused to watch the spectacle that Damion was putting on. Making sure to heed Mage Teft's advice, Damion took breaks for lunch and dinner before continuing on along the road well into the night.

Because Damion had True Sight active, he did not even notice when night fell. However, once he checked his watch and realized how late it was, Damion remembered that he was supposed to take breaks and not over do his training. Walking a few paces off the road, Damion took out his pack and set up his tent and decided to camp for the night.

When Damion woke in the morning he ate breakfast and was in the process of breaking down his tent when he saw two ground cars speeding along the road from Benault Forest. The lead ground car was smaller and was being overtaken by the other.

Damion was not sure what was going on, but just from what he could see, the situation was not normal.
