Chapter 112 – Interviews Part 3
Damion's eyes flashed when he heard Headmaster Colon's description of Beryl School of the Mystic Arts' library. Was the man bragging? Or did his school really have the largest collection of magic seals. If the school was as old as he claimed, it was quite possible.
Headmaster Colon saw Damion's interest spike at the mention of the school's library and knew he found the hook he needed to get Damion to his school.
"Are you familiar with the legendary Mage Brysen Glacies?"
"Is that the legendary Ice mage who was a teacher at your school in the past?" Damion asked. As soon as he did realized he should have said no, and let Headmaster Colon fill him in, but it was too late now.
"Yes he was. Mage Glacies was a prominent professor at our school during the Sixteenth Age. He was also quite the spell smith. Aside from tier 1 spells, he only ever used spells of his own creation."
"That is quite impressive. You wouldn't happen to have an example of one of his spells?" Damion was hopeful, but not really expecting Headmaster Colon to provide him anything.
"I'm afraid we do not allow magic seals from our library to leave the library. And since I am not an Ice or a Water mage, I am not able to learn any of his magic seals myself."
"Mage Glacies' magic seals are part of the legacy of your school and quite exclusive right?" Damion asked as he realized something suspicious in Headmaster Colon's offer.
"All of our magic seals are exclusive. It is very rare for our collection to ever be shared outside of the school family."
"If I attend Beryl School of the Mystic Arts I would have free access to the library?"
Headmaster Colon was about to answer when Manager Halsey cleared his throat. The sound caused Headmaster Colon to pause. After a moment Headmaster Colon started to speak in a measured voice.
"There are several sections to our library. The basic section, which is composed of the widest selection is open to all students."
"I'm guessing it contains the most common and basic spells, similar to or the same as what all the other magic academies have in their libraries?"
"Yes, that would be a fair assessment," Headmaster Colon admitted. "The second level of our library is the elite section, which students may visit should they pay the required merit points."
"Merit points?" Damion questioned.
"By doing well in classes, competitions and completing missions for the school you can earn merit points, which can be spent on a variety of different special services."
"And the final level of the library? The one where the most exclusive spells are kept, like Mage Glacies'?"
At this point Headmaster Colon was quite deflated. With Damion seeing through his bait and switch approach and Manager Halsey there to keep him honest, the Headmaster had no choice but level with Damion.
"The special section of our library is reserved for professors or other employees of the school. With the occasional access being given to students who perform special services to the school."
Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
"So the spells most useful to me would be the hardest for me to obtain," Damion surmised.
"Greatness requires great effort my boy," Headmaster Colon said, returning to his more flamboyant personality.
"Yes well, I've put in quite a bit of effort already," Damion said feeling a bit exhausted.
For eighteen years Damion had been waiting to be a real mage and now that the Magic System had unlocked and he could be considered a real mage. Only, now that he could properly learn magic, Damion was finding all sorts of hoops he has to jump through just to earn that right.
Damion had always thought it was the highest of priority to train people with the rare ability to be a mage, but now Damion was finding politics were involved and this world was not as united as he had once thought.
"Of course you have!" Headmaster Colon quickly agreed. "The effort of reaching the Rank you have is a truly noteworthy achievement and to reach this position at your age is remarkable."
"But…" Damion tossed out.
"Ahh… but those were not things you accomplished at or for the Beryl School of the Mystic Arts and thus not eligible for merits."
"I don't even get a bit of merit for deciding to attend your school?"
"I might be able to arrange a bit of merit be awarded to you in light of you joining us at your age. To make up for the years of hard work you did alone."
"I suppose that would certainly help me," Damion said as he tried to think of a way to politely end the interview.
If not for Ms. Teft's warning, Damion would have easily been enticed by the idea of Beryl's library. He may have unlocked the basics of Nashto with the help of the Magic System, but Damion had a feeling he would need to study a large number of magic seals before he would be able to complete his new quest.
"I look forward to hearing your acceptance of my offer. For now I bid you farewell," Headmaster Colon excused himself from Manager Halsey's office with a deep bow leaving Damion and Manager Halsey alone.
"Is he always so…"
"Exuberant," Manager Halsey offered.
"I suppose that is as good a word for him as any," Damion agreed.
"The Colon family is one of the oldest noble families and the older families like to hang on to the old traditions, especially those families in the Viridis White Zone."
"Traditions such as?"
"You can worry about their politics if you ever actually go to Viridis. You will have an easier understanding of the five Viridis families if you can see them first hand."
"How long until Silver Spire Magic Academy is here?"
"As soon as you are ready for them," Manager Halsey said looking to Damion before he signaled the representatives of Silver Spire Magic Academy to enter. When Damion nodded Manager Halsey signaled for them to enter.
"Mage Wells," Headmaster Tristan Sorin said as he entered with Ms. Teft following closely behind. "Very good to see you again and my sincerest sympathies for your loss."
"Thank you Headmaster Sorin."
"Should you choose to attend Silver Spire Magic Academy, Mage Teft will resume her post of dean. And she will be in charge of a creating a curriculum for you. Her goal will be to fill in the missing pieces of your education."
"What will my curriculum look like?"
"Ms. Teft has already attested to your proficiencies in certain areas. This will allow us to grant you credit for many advance classes, such as Wilderness Survival, Dungeoning Basics and most of the combat classes.
"I'm told you are a quick study, so the courses will be abbreviated. I expect that you will excel and be able to graduate our academy by the end of next year."
"Really?" Damion questioned in surprise.
"I explained to Headmaster Sorin that it was in Silver Spire's best interest to build loyalty with you and not try to trap you into being a pawn left to always chase the promise of power."
Damion was not sure what to think about what Ms. Teft said. She had warned him about the academies wanting to trap and trick him into working for them forever under the guise of him earning the right for high tier magic. Now it appeared she had negotiated a special deal with Silver Spire on his behalf to make sure that he would not be trapped.
"That sounds like quite the deal," Damion told them as he tried to figure out if there was a hidden trap we was not seeing.
"It was not my first choice to make this deal," Headmaster Sorin admitted. "Mage Teft convinced me that genuinely helping you to reach your potential and being honest with you will reward us all more in the long run."
