Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Shadows Loom

The Cave was tense after the intruder incident. Even though the team tried to act normal, there was an unspoken unease hanging in the air. Batman's warning about the League of Shadows had clearly gotten to everyone.

For me, it was worse. Knowing they might be interested in me made my skin crawl. I wasn't exactly in a position to fight off an entire organization of assassins. The thought of being on their radar kept me awake long after the rest of the team had gone to bed.

The next morning, the team gathered in the training room for a debrief. Batman had left, but Aqualad took charge, his calm demeanor helping to steady the group.

"Last night's breach is a reminder that we are not untouchable," he said, addressing everyone. "The League of Shadows is a dangerous enemy, and we must remain vigilant."

"What's the plan, then?" Artemis asked, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.

"We'll focus on improving our security and preparing for any future encounters," Aqualad said. "Kade, you'll continue your training with us. Your abilities may be unpredictable, but they could prove vital if the League makes another move."

All eyes turned to me, and I felt the weight of their scrutiny.

"Understood," I said, keeping my voice steady.

"Good," Aqualad said. "For now, we'll run drills to ensure we're ready for anything."

The drills were intense. Aqualad and Robin led the exercises, pushing everyone to their limits. I struggled to keep up, especially during the combat scenarios. My energy blasts were powerful, but they lacked precision, and my stamina was still an issue.

"You're too focused on brute force," Robin said after one of my failed attempts to hit a moving target. "Power doesn't mean anything if you can't control it."

"I'm working on it," I snapped, frustration bubbling to the surface.

"Work harder," he replied, his tone sharp.

Before I could respond, Miss Martian stepped in. "Robin, maybe ease up a little. He's still learning."

"He doesn't have time to learn," Robin shot back. "The League of Shadows isn't going to wait for him to figure things out."

"Enough," Aqualad said, his voice firm. "We're a team. We help each other improve. Robin, you've made your point. Kade, take a moment to refocus."

I nodded, grateful for the reprieve.

Later, as the team took a break, I found myself sitting alone in one of the observation decks overlooking the training room. The view was impressive, but my mind was elsewhere.

"You okay?" a voice asked.

I turned to see Miss Martian hovering nearby, her expression kind.

"Yeah," I said, though it was clear I wasn't convincing anyone.

She floated down to sit beside me. "Robin can be… intense. But he means well. He just wants everyone to be prepared."

"I get that," I said. "But it's hard not to feel like I'm dragging everyone down."

"You're not," she said firmly. "You're new to all this, but you're trying. That's what matters."

Her words were reassuring, but the doubt still lingered.

That night, I couldn't sleep. The Cave was quiet, the faint hum of its systems the only sound. I found myself wandering the halls, my thoughts racing.

Eventually, I ended up in the hangar where the intruder had escaped. The scene replayed in my mind—their speed, their skill, the way they'd seemed to anticipate my every move.

"Can't sleep either?"

I jumped, spinning around to see Artemis leaning against the wall.

"Do you always sneak up on people?" I asked, my heart still racing.

"Only when they look like they're brooding," she said with a smirk.

I sighed, leaning against one of the hangar's support beams. "Just trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do. Batman says the League of Shadows might be after me, but I don't even know why. I don't know anything about myself."

Artemis studied me for a moment before walking over. "You're not the only one with a complicated past," she said. "Trust me, I get it. But sitting here overthinking it isn't going to help. You've got to focus on what you can do."

"And what if that's not enough?" I asked.

"It will be," she said confidently. "You've got potential, Kade. You just need to stop doubting yourself long enough to see it."

Her words were simple, but they struck a chord. Maybe she was right.

The next day, the team was called to the briefing room. Red Tornado stood at the head of the table, a holographic map glowing in front of him.

"We've intercepted communications suggesting the League of Shadows is planning an operation in Qurac," he said. "Details are scarce, but it appears to involve a high-value target."

"Are we going in?" Kid Flash asked, already bouncing with excitement.

"Yes," Red Tornado said. "This mission will require stealth and precision. Kade, you will remain here to continue your training."

I nodded, though the frustration was clear on my face.

As the team prepared to leave, Miss Martian gave me a reassuring smile. "We'll be back soon."

"Good luck," I said, watching as they boarded the bioship and took off.

Once again, I was left alone in the Cave. But this time, I wasn't content to sit and wait. I headed to the training room, determined to push myself harder than ever.

If the League of Shadows was watching me, I'd make sure I was ready for them.
