Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Stranger in Their Midst
Alright! Here's Chapter 2:
Reborn in Young Justice
Disclaimer: I do not own Young Justice or any of its characters. They belong to DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation. The only thing I own is my original character.
We sprinted through the forest, the sound of heavy boots and shouted commands echoing behind us. Whoever these guys were, they weren't giving up.
"This way!" Robin shouted, leading the group. He darted through the underbrush with ease, like he'd done it a thousand times.
I followed close behind, my mind racing. Questions swirled like a storm in my head. Why was I here? How did I know how to fight? And more importantly—what would happen when these guys realized I didn't belong?
"Keep up, newbie!" Kid Flash called over his shoulder. "Unless you're just here for show!"
I didn't bother answering. I was too focused on the pounding of my feet, the sound of my breathing, and the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
Ahead, Robin abruptly stopped, holding up a hand. The rest of us skidded to a halt, barely avoiding colliding into him.
"They're closing in," Aqualad said, his voice calm but tense. "We can't keep running."
Robin pulled a small device from his belt. "ETA on the Bioship?"
"Sixty seconds," a voice crackled in response—Miss Martian, if I remembered correctly.
"Good," Robin said. "We'll hold them off until—"
A shot rang out, and a tree trunk near us splintered, showering us with bark. The enemy was here.
"Great," Kid Flash muttered, already moving.
The battle resumed, and I was right in the thick of it. This time, I felt more in control. My movements were sharper, my reflexes faster. Energy crackled around me as I fought, bursts of force knocking enemies back.
"Impressive," Aqualad said as he slammed one of the soldiers to the ground with a water-constructed hammer. "You handle yourself well."
"Thanks," I managed, though I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Was this really me, or was it Kade Ryder—the persona I'd apparently inherited?
Just as things were starting to look manageable, a new figure stepped into the fray. This one was different. Clad in advanced armor and wielding a high-tech staff, he moved with precision, cutting through our defenses like a blade through paper.
"Fall back!" Robin shouted, clearly recognizing the threat.
But before I could react, the armored figure was on me. His staff swung in a blur, and I barely managed to block it with a hastily formed energy shield. The force of the impact sent me stumbling back.
"Who are you?" he demanded, his voice distorted by a modulator.
I didn't answer. Partly because I didn't know, and partly because I was too busy trying not to get hit again.
He pressed the attack, and I could feel my energy reserves draining. Every block, every counter, took more out of me than I'd expected. I wasn't going to last much longer.
Then, just as things were starting to look grim, the sound of engines filled the air. The Bioship descended, its sleek form shimmering as it decloaked.
"Get in!" Miss Martian's voice called out telepathically.
Aqualad grabbed my arm, pulling me back toward the ship as the others covered our retreat. We stumbled aboard, the hatch sealing behind us.
The Bioship took off, leaving our pursuers behind.
"Everyone okay?" Miss Martian asked, her concern evident as she turned to us.
"Peachy," Kid Flash said, though he was clearly winded.
Robin glanced at me, his eyes narrowing. "And who are you?"
All eyes turned to me. My heart sank.
"I… I don't know," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.
Silence filled the cabin, the weight of my answer sinking in.
Robin crossed his arms, clearly unimpressed. "Not good enough. You don't just show up out of nowhere with powers and no explanation."
"Robin," Aqualad said, his tone firm but calm. "Give him a chance to explain. He did help us."
Robin didn't look convinced, but he didn't press further.
"I don't know how I got here," I said, trying to gather my thoughts. "And I don't know why I can do… what I did. I just… woke up like this."
"Amnesia?" Miss Martian suggested, tilting her head.
"Or a really bad liar," Robin muttered.
"I'm telling the truth!" I snapped, my frustration boiling over.
"Enough," Aqualad said, stepping between us. He turned to me, his expression serious. "We'll take you back to the Cave. Batman will want to know about this.
Batman. Great. As if this situation wasn't already intimidating enough.
I sank into one of the seats, exhaustion catching up with me. Whatever was happening, I had a feeling this was only the beginning.
