Chapter 48: Chapter 48: The Bullet That Bends

Owen was sure he caught a glimmer of smugness in the female assassin's eyes—her silent way of saying, I saved your life.

Suddenly, with a loud clang, the large double doors behind them flew open. Another gunman appeared, wielding a submachine gun aimed directly at the assassin.

Bang-bang-bang-bang-bang!

Before the gunman could fire, Owen's pistols barked out shots simultaneously, dropping him in an instant. As the smoke cleared, Owen stepped protectively in front of the assassin, a triumphant grin spreading across his face.

"You're welcome. Looks like we're even now."

The assassin snorted dismissively, unimpressed.

They kicked the doors open and cautiously moved into the room. Strangely, there was no gunfire from inside. Owen peered around and saw a white-haired old man, a middle-aged man, and several frightened girls scattered throughout the room. The two men, armed with handguns, used two of the girls as human shields.

Owen scanned the scene and quickly found Kim—she was being used as a shield by the middle-aged man. The other girls trembled in fear, shrinking away as Owen waved them off. Taking the opportunity, they bolted for the door, sobbing uncontrollably.

Bryan had already contacted Owen to inform him that Amanda had been rescued and was on her way here. Thankfully, Owen had also found Kim.

"Bryan! Where are you? Let's talk!" the middle-aged man shouted hysterically. He was much more tactical than the old man, keeping most of his body hidden behind Kim. The old man, however, was careless—his head and upper torso were fully exposed, a glaring vulnerability.

Owen recognized the man immediately. It was Ken, Bryan's former colleague, who had betrayed him in the movie version of events. Ken had become a corrupt protector of the Albanian traffickers, showing no remorse even after Bryan's daughter was abducted. Owen couldn't understand why Bryan had spared him in the film.

"Did you find who you were looking for?" the assassin asked, pulling Owen from his thoughts. He nodded, gesturing toward Kim. She recognized him too, her tear-streaked face filled with fear. She dared not speak but couldn't stop the tears from flowing.

"Gaspar Naceri?" The assassin suddenly pulled out a photograph and looked at it before turning to the old man.

"Who's paying you to kill me? No matter how much he's offering, I can—"

Bang! Bang! Bang-bang!

The assassin didn't let him finish. Her gun flashed as she shot the girl in front of him first, then swiftly fired another round that blew apart his skull.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Owen roared, his voice trembling with shock. The cold efficiency of her actions stunned him—she had killed the girl and then the target without hesitation.

"This is insane. I'm a cop! You can't just—"

"Look at her hand," the assassin interrupted calmly.

Owen fell silent and glanced down at the girl's body. Sure enough, there was a small handgun clutched in her hand. His stomach dropped. She had been part of the gang, a hidden threat. Owen broke into a cold sweat at the realization.

"My job here is done," the assassin said indifferently before turning to leave without so much as a glance at Owen.

"Fall back! Everyone, get back!" Ken barked from behind cover, his voice filled with fear. He was terrified that the assassin might kill him next and dragged Kim further behind a pillar.

Owen didn't have time to apologize to the assassin. He kept his gun trained on Ken, searching for an opening, but Ken's experience showed. He remained entirely concealed behind Kim and the pillar, leaving no part of his body exposed.

Owen knew Ken had been a special operative, sent abroad on covert missions. Though he wasn't on Bryan's level, he was still formidable. Owen felt trapped, unable to make a move.

Just as he was considering his options, the assassin acted without warning. She spun gracefully, swinging her gun in a wide arc before firing. The shot seemed off, but a split second later, blood sprayed from Ken's temple. His body jerked violently and collapsed.

Owen blinked in disbelief, rushing forward to pull Kim behind him. He kicked Ken's gun away and aimed his weapon, only to see that Ken was already dead. Blood pooled beneath his head from a clean bullet wound.

Kim trembled, her face pale as she noticed something wet on her skin. When she realized it was Ken's blood, she broke down completely, her pent-up fear and trauma overwhelming her. Her voice cracked, and she could barely produce a sound as she sobbed silently.

Owen gently held her, whispering reassurances, but his mind was still reeling. How the hell did that bullet hit him? Ken had been fully hidden. It was as if the bullet had curved.

The absurdity of the thought passed quickly. Gunfire echoed outside, interrupting his thoughts. It sounded like a heavy firefight.

"We need to get out of here... Wait, where is she?" Owen turned, realizing that the assassin had vanished. She had slipped away without a word.

"She really has a flair for the dramatic," he muttered before shaking his head. There was no time to dwell on it. They were still in danger, and escape was the priority.

Outside the Club

The Albanians were in full retreat. They were nothing more than desperate criminals, and their bravado crumbled against the GIPN's superior tactics and firepower.

Mark had witnessed the entire confrontation between his men and the police. At first, he had tried to intervene, but the firefight erupted too quickly. As his men were slaughtered, he lost his nerve and stayed out of sight.

Horpast, meanwhile, lay flat on the ground, bullets whizzing overhead. His forces were decimated in mere minutes. Half of the men he had brought were already dead.

"Fall back! We need to get out of here!" he shouted, prioritizing his own survival. His men scrambled to reach their cars, but one of them was gunned down after only a few steps.

Another tried to return fire but was instantly shot in the head, his skull blown apart. His body crumpled into a grotesque heap.

Not everyone was as unlucky. A few Albanians toward the rear managed to retreat under the cover of their fallen comrades. They started their engines and sped away, but how they would explain this debacle to the gang—if it even still existed—was a problem for another day.
