Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Clash of Destruction
The air was heavy with tension as Kokabiel stood before me, his dark wings spread wide and his malicious grin stretching across his face.
"You're bold, I'll give you that," Kokabiel sneered, summoning a massive light spear that crackled with destructive energy. "But boldness doesn't win battles."
I didn't flinch. Instead, I rolled my shoulders, letting my own power rise. The faint violet glow of Hakai surrounded me, radiating pure, destructive intent.
"Let's find out," I said, a smirk tugging at my lips.
Kokabiel didn't wait. He hurled the light spear with terrifying speed, the air screaming as the weapon shot toward me.
I raised my hand, and the Hakai aura flared.
The spear struck my aura—
And vanished.
Not shattered. Not blocked. Simply gone.
Kokabiel froze, his grin faltering for the first time. "What the—"
I didn't give him a chance to recover.
With a burst of speed, I closed the distance between us, my fist glowing with Hakai energy. I swung, aiming for his midsection—
He dodged, barely, his wings flaring to propel him backward.
"You're fast," he growled, summoning two more light spears. "But I've fought dragons before. You're nothing special."
I chuckled, stepping forward. "You've never fought someone like me."
[The Battle Unfolds]
Kokabiel attacked relentlessly, his light spears raining down in a deadly barrage. Each one left craters in the ground, the air thick with the acrid scent of burning stone.
But none of them touched me.
The Hakai aura surrounding me erased every spear that came close.
"You're wasting your time," I said, sidestepping another attack.
Kokabiel snarled, frustration evident in his movements. "What is this power?!"
I didn't answer.
Instead, I raised my hand, summoning a small sphere of Hakai.
The air around it warped, reality itself bending under the weight of the destructive energy.
Kokabiel's eyes widened as I launched the sphere toward him.
He dodged, the sphere grazing his wing.
A sliver of his wing disappeared, leaving behind a perfectly smooth edge where the feathers had been.
Kokabiel screamed, his flight faltering as he struggled to stay in the air.
"You bastard!" he roared, summoning a massive light spear infused with dark energy.
He hurled it with everything he had.
I stood still, watching as the weapon approached.
At the last second, I raised my hand—Hakai surged.
The spear disintegrated.
Kokabiel landed hard, breathing heavily. His confidence was gone, replaced by something far more satisfying—fear.
[The Occult Research Club's Fight]
While I kept Kokabiel busy, the rest of the Occult Research Club was locked in their own battles.
Kiba darted through the battlefield, his sword flashing as he clashed with Fallen Angels. His movements were precise, calculated, each strike aimed to disable rather than kill.
Akeno hovered above, her hands crackling with lightning. She unleashed a storm of electric strikes, forcing several Fallen Angels to retreat.
Koneko moved like a wrecking ball, her strength overwhelming as she smashed through anything in her path.
And then there was Asia.
She stood at the back, her hands glowing with the soft light of Twilight Healing as she tended to the wounded. Her movements were shaky, uncertain, but her determination was unshakable.
"Asia, watch out!" Kiba shouted as a Fallen Angel hurled a light spear toward her.
Asia froze, her eyes wide.
Before the spear could reach her, a black winged figure intercepted it.
Raynare.
The former Fallen Angel deflected the spear with her own, her eyes blazing.
"You'll have to get through me first," she growled, summoning another weapon.
Asia stared at her, stunned. "Why… why did you help me?"
Raynare didn't look back. "Because he told me to."
[The Final Strike]
Back on the main battlefield, Kokabiel was growing desperate.
His attacks were wild now, lacking the precision and arrogance he had displayed at the start.
"You think you can stop me?!" he shouted, his voice hoarse. "I'm Kokabiel, a leader of the Fallen Angels! I won't lose to a devil brat!"
I smirked. "You already have."
I raised both hands, summoning a massive sphere of Hakai energy.
The air around us stilled, the weight of the energy pressing down on everything. Even Kokabiel hesitated, his wings faltering as he stared at the sphere in disbelief.
"This is your last chance," I said, my voice calm. "Leave. Now."
Kokabiel growled, his hands trembling as he summoned another light spear.
"You… you won't—"
I hurled the sphere.
It moved slowly, deliberately, the air warping around it as it traveled.
Kokabiel screamed, launching his spear toward the sphere.
The two attacks collided—
And the light spear was consumed.
The sphere continued forward, closing in on Kokabiel.
At the last second, he flapped his wings, launching himself into the air.
The sphere passed beneath him, striking the ground—
And erased everything in a 20-foot radius.
Kokabiel hovered above the battlefield, his face pale, his wings trembling.
"This… isn't over," he snarled, glaring at me. "You'll regret this."
I raised my hand, forming another sphere.
"Do you really want to test me?"
He hesitated.
Then, with a snarl, he turned and flew off into the night.
I watched him go, my hands lowering as the glow of Hakai faded.
"It's over," I muttered, turning back to the others.
[Aftermath – Occult Research Club]
The group was silent as we returned to the clubhouse.
Rias sat behind her desk, her expression unreadable as she watched me.
"You let him go," she said finally.
I shrugged. "Killing him wouldn't have accomplished anything. He knows what I can do now. That's enough."
Akeno chuckled, her eyes gleaming. "Ara~ ara~ You're full of surprises, Issei-kun."
Kiba frowned. "You're taking a lot of risks."
"Yeah," I said, leaning back against the couch. "But they're calculated."
Koneko muttered, "Scary."
Raynare, who had been silent until now, stepped forward.
"You didn't kill him," she said, her tone unreadable. "Why?"
I met her gaze. "Because I'm not like them. I don't kill unless I have to."
Her eyes narrowed. "You're playing a dangerous game, devil."
I smirked. "That's the only kind worth playing."
[Elsewhere – Azazel's Next Move]
Azazel stood alone in his office, staring out the window as the night stretched on.
"So, Kokabiel failed," he murmured, his golden eyes narrowing. "And the Sekiryuutei grows stronger."
He turned, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Interesting. Let's see how far this dragon can go."
